If you have an active lifestyle and play sports and exercise regularly your body will need a lot more calories to keep it going than if you lead a very sedentary lifestyle sitting in front of a computer all day.
An older person will need fewer calories for metabolism than someone who is young. It's very common for people approaching middle age to start gaining weight.
Keep your metabolism working effectively by eating smaller meals more often rather than one large meal a day. Ideally you should eat six small meals a day spaced at no more than 3 hours apart.
The body goes into panic if you leave long gaps between meals and starts to conserve calories in anticipation of a period of famine!

Never miss a meal. Many people on a diet make the mistake of skipping breakfast.This is the most important meal of the day as during the night your metabolism slows down and if you don't replace essential nutrients it will start to store fat.
There are certain foods that speed metabolism and this can help you to lose weight. Start the day with half a grapefruit.
Grapefruit can reduce the amount of insulin absorbed for up to 2 hours after eating. It also contains fewer calories than is needed to digest it, so you will need to burn extra calories. Eating grapefruit will kick start your metabolism for the day.
A good breakfast to have is a bowl of oatmeal topped with a sliced banana. Oatmeal is very high in fibre and will keep your blood sugar levels stable as well as make you feel full for longer.
It's also a cholesterol fighting food and is packed with fat burning antioxidants.
Drink a couple of cups of green tea a day as not only is it rich in cancer fighting antioxidants but it also contains polyphenols that increase the rate at which fat is burned.
If you don't like the taste of green tea you can get green tea supplements. Water is a fantastic metabolism booster, especially very cold water. It can boost your metabolism 24% after 90 minutes of drinking it.
Water is also essential to keep the body hydrated and is anti aging. It plumps up the skin and keeps it supple. Drink at least 8 glasses a day and more in the hot weather.
Spices are great at raising the metabolism as they generate body heat and the body has to burn calories to cool down again and cayenne pepper also helps to reduce cholesterol.
Chilli peppers raise the heart rate and can increase metabolism by up to 50%. If you prefer a milder taste remove the seeds as this is the hottest part of the chilli.
A diet rich in vegetables and fruits is not only healthy and full of vital nutrients, but the high fibre content takes longer to digest and requires more calories which keeps the metabolism working effectively.
By adjusting your diet and eating regular small meals you can make a big difference to how much weight you lose. Taking a short walk of about 10 minutes before a meal will also help to speed up your metabolism.
