How to install bowfishing lights properly

How to prevent bowfishing light breakdowns.

Traveling on rough southern roads and rough waters to your bowfishing location will cause vibration and stress fractures on your light brackets. It has been my bowfishing experience over the past four years that the flood lights we use are not for marine applications. The only thing you can do for your floodlights when bowfishing is to convert them to a marine application as best as possible.

The weak link in bowfishing lights is generally the light bracket. The bowfishing light brackets will break, it's just a matter of time and exposure to the elements.

I just spent the past weekend re-installing my bowfishing lights and they operate with great improvement. While traveling to the dock not one bowfishing light bulb was loose thanks to installing them in a vertical manner.

Everyone starts off with the affordable halogen bowfishing lights. The best bowfishing lights by far are the high pressure sodium bowfishing lights in my opinion though!

Vertical bowfishing light install recommended

I personally prefer 150 watt high pressure sodium lights bowfishing lights. They offer more visibility through the water while bowfishing in muddy water conditions. Many others that bowfish also use 250 watt metal halide and 500 watt halogen lights for bowfishing.

Getting started
Remove the bowfishing light cover and the bulb as to not damage them while working with the light fixture box.

Place in a vertical light position. It has been my experience in the past that if you mount HPS (high pressure sodium) bowfishing lights in a horizontal manner vibration will will loosen the bowfishing light bulbs. Mounting the bowfishing lights in a vertical manner will decrease some of the vibration and with a little gravity and luck they will vibrate into the light receptacle and tighten naturally while you travel.

Next, be sure to mount your bowfishing light bracket flush as possible to the light box you will be using for your bowfishing light.
The tighter or flusher the mount the more rigid it will be and only the boat vibration will have an effect on the lighting system.

I used a DEWALT D28110 4-1/2-Inch Small Angle Grinderto achieve a flush mount with the bowfishing light casting process and removed a little material from the bracket.

Planning for your brackets

Drilling the holes for mounting the bracket to the bowfishing light.

The larger the washer the more surface area it will cover. I prefer stainless steel washers because they wont rust in the marine environment.

Place the washer on the top and behind the the lens light cover so it is totally flat. This will ensure that it wont be in the way when you install it later from the inside of the bowfishing light bow.

Bowfishing Lights installed with hardware

While installing the bowfishing light bracket I was a quick learn.

Never mount the bracket to the bowfishing light first.
Why Not? Gravity will work against you when trying to install the hardware and the weight of the bowfishing light will make in more difficult.
Also if you use a dab of silicone on the lock washer it will help hold it in place while getting the nut started and act like lock-tight later.

It is definitely easier to mount the bracket first then the light second.

Electrical wiring made easy

Once again I learned the hard way about wiring bowfishing lights. Best tip for bowfishing light wiring is to NEVER wire more then two lights to one plug in.

If for some mechanical reason or failure in your lighting system you will only have two lights that will go out at one time. Last trip I had four bowfishing lights on one circuit and lost all four lights at once. Thank god I had my two lights that I can move around the boat and we were able to zip tie them to the upper shin rail so the bowfishing trip was not lost.

Use the proper wire nuts for your bowfishing light installation.

Grabbing a variety pack will make sure you have the write size wiring nuts before you even start you bowfishing light install.

Water tight electrical connections

Conduct a bowfishing light test before sealing up your electrical connections.

I used a little Liquid Electrical Tape in the ends of the wire nut that you can see in this photo to improve on the water tight protection. Just use enough on the wires and inside the wire nut to slightly coat any bare wires. Allow for dry time with the wire nuts placed upside down.

Then use the Electrical Tape to secure it in a manner to prevent even more moisture from getting into the wire connections.
