Zend Optimizer in simple language is PHP code accelerator, it will help your site performance for faster execution of PHP code. Zend Optimizer also widely use to run encrypted PHP code that created by Zend Guard.
Appserv is one of PHP installer that available for free that run under Windows operating system.
In this lens I will describe how to install Zend Optimizer on Appserv step by step. I assume you have install latest Appserv version (5.2.10) before follow this guide (if you don't you may refer to this Appserv install guide). Lets get start!

Download latest version of Zend Optimizer
Download latest version of Zend Optimizer from this address.

Choose Zend Optimizer for PHP 5.2 since PHP version you have with Appserv is 5.2.6 (5.2 series).
Save to your computer ( My Document or other folder)

How to check if Zend Optimizer installed?
1. Start Apache web server manually within Appserv menu.
2. Open web browser (internet explorer, mozilla firefox etc)
3. Open this address - http://localhost
4. Click link PHP information
Scroll down and find this section :

If you see no Zend Optimizer word on that section that mean you have no Zend Optimizer installed.

Install Zend Optimizer
Double click Zend Optimizer installed you download on previous step.

Installshield wizard will shown. Click Next.

Accept License Agreement and click Next.

Click Browse button since we will change the destination folder.

Choose Folder -> C:\Appserv\php5\extras
Click Next.

Next step is configure Apache folder, to find out which version of Apache that Appserv 5.2.10 use. Open http://localhost and see Apache version on that page. (Version 2.2.8)

Use that information for next screen ( choose Apache 2.x) and click Next.

Next step is configure php, installer will ask where php.ini located. You can use PHP information page and see the exact location. (yes, its located on C:\Windows

With that information change the folder to C:\Windows, click Next.

Next step is configure Apache root information, to find out where apache root information open Notepad and open httpd.conf file that located on C:\Appserv\Apache2.2\conf

Use the information to set Destination folder for Apache

Install wizard will give brief summary of information gathered, click Install.

New pop up will show up, asking for shutdown Apache.

Stop the Apache service from Appserv menu

If you don't install Apache as service, you will see this picture.

After Apache instance no longer detected by install wizard it will start to process installation till finish.

Setup has finished installing Zend Optimizer.

To take the effect make sure to restart Apache and reload localhost.
If you see Zend Optimizer like this picture then you have working Zend Optimizer on your Appserv.

Installshield wizard will shown. Click Next.
