How To Jump Higher In Basketball - The First Steps

Jumping Higher Is Easier Learning Than You Think

Everyday we see the stars of the NBA flying past their opponents and dunking it in the basket. We also see LeBron chasing down people going for seemingly uncontested layups, and swatting it into the front row. After watching this, we often find ourselves wondering how to jump higher in basketball.

The first thing you need to do when trying to figure out how to jump higher in basketball, is to get your body fat to an ideal percentage. If you are severely overweight, then just doing this alone can possibly add an inch or two to your vertical leap. This can be done with a low fat diet, combined with a daily cardiovascular workout.

One thing people overlook when learning how to jump higher in basketball, practicing jumping. It makes sense, right? In order to get better at shooting, you go outside and shoot. To get better at dribbling, you work on ballhandling skills. So in order to jump higher, you need to simply practice jumping. Practice by going off of one foot, as well as two. Make sure to work on using each leg. Also, do some running jumps. This helps you refine your technique and find exactly how you should jump to get the best results.

The Best Daily Workout To Jump Higher In Basketball

Don't Forget The Most Important Step Before Starting To Practice Jumping Higher

I am going to take you through a daily workout that you should implement if you are looking to jump higher.

1. The first thing you should do, is doing a good warm-up. You can do this with some light jogging and stretching. After this, begin with some calf strengthening exercises.

2. At second you need to start up with some calf raises. You need to start out doing about 50 of them. Your goal is to be able to do 500 calf raises. It may take a few weeks or even months to get to this point, but eventually you should get there. When you are coming down from your calf raises, do not let your heels touch the ground. If necessary do the exercises on a step, with your heels hanging off the edge of the step, to prevent your heels from touching the ground.

3. After you get done doing this, jump as high as you can for as many times as you can. Next, you want to work out your thighs. The best way to do this is by doing squats. You want to use an amount of weight that allows you to do 50 squats. When you get used to it, increase your weight so that it is very challenging to do 50 reps. Improving the strength of your thighs is often very overlooked, but it is very important, especially when jumping straight up off of two feet to block a shot or to drunk a ball from directly under the basket.

4. Another exercise that is often overlooked is strengthening your abs. Most people do not associate your abs with being able to jump, but the arch of your back and abs being strengthened helps you build more force toward your target. To work out your abs, you need to simply do as many crunches you can, three times.

Also, working out your shoulders and arms is important when you are working out to jump higher in basketball. There are many exercises to strengthen your arms.

Find some that you feel comfortable doing. When you strengthen your arms, it enables you to swing your arms with more force when leading into your jump.
