How to Learn a Foreign Language using your iPad

Ranked #2,323 in Culture & Society, #53,450 overall

Learn a new language if you travel often

Have you ever considered using foreign language applications on your iPad?

Be prepared for your next travel. If you travel a lot like me, it is a good idea to study a new language. Tablets have become handy devices to study a new language in the comfort of your own home. I have a fair knowledge of French and use the iPad 2 to listen to podcasts in French, to read french magazines and newspapers and to use applications aimed at improving my vocabulary and grammar.

The iPad's applications are not limited to the French language. You can download applications to study numerous other languages as well, for instance Italian, German, Japanese, Greek, Hebrew, Portuguese, Kenyan Swahili, Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and even Korean. Do a search in the application store to find out what other language applications you can download.

A foreign language application can be your language instructor

Your iPad can facilitate foreign language teaching

type=textTo practice my French, I use applications such as Word power, Learn French and Speak Easy French. Many of these applications' lite versions can be downloaded for free but then later upgraded to the full versions for a small payment. However, since the iPad 2 cannot download files larger than 20 MB, you need to download many of these applications using your desktop computer. But it is worth the effort since the interactivity of these applications is great. An application such as Wordpower has a voice recorder which you can use to practice your French accent by comparing it to that of the native speaker. Many of us lead very busy lives and therefore some applications' teachings are based on learning one word a day and also phrases related to that word.

By listening to podcasts in the language which you want to learn, you get familiar with the sound of the words, learn more vocabulary and practice your reading skills. The iPad 2's built in iPod is great and very user-friendly.

I used to attend classes in the evenings to improve my French, but now that I discovered the iPad 2's foreign language applications, I can do this in the comfort of my own home. I have found the perfect French teacher.

French Class for iPhone works great too. I used it to get better at French while I was travelling through Africa. I think when it comes to language apps, there are two big varieties: apps that try to teach you a language from scratch - which I dont recommend - and apps that keep your knowledge of the language up to date/support your study - definitely recommended.
