How to Learn Singing
Some Tips to Start With
You've watched American Idol and you'd love to give it a go, but you are not sure how to learn singing...You may have dreamed of singing like many people, but don't know where to begin.
If you really want to learn to sing, either on your own or with live coaching, here are some tips to get you on your way:
Singing Tips
Before You Begin on Your Quest to Learn Singing
Listen...
Listen to lots of different styles of music so that you will begin to identify what genre will suit you.Take into consideration your personality and the sound of your voice when you listen. You may have a powerful voice suited to opera, or, rhythm and blues just gets your toes tapping and stirs the music in you, or perhaps you are singer who likes to tell a story - more along the lines of a country and western singer.
Next thing to do is discover your vocal range.
You do that by singing a note that is easy for you to sing, then sing higher notes till the notes weaken. Then starting back at the first note do the same, this time singing lower to find the other end of your range.
This gives you the basics of your range and an idea of what notes you need to focus on and get better at singing.

Learn Singing with Self-Study
Complete Study Courses
Many a singer has been self-taught.They listen to other singers, by developing 'an ear' for music and learn singing that way. Some singers trained in the traditional way look down on this way to learn singing, but it can be an advantage in developing strong pitch recognition.
However, one disadvantage of learning 'by ear' is that bad habits can be picked up and they can be difficult to correct down the track.
The other way of learning singing is through formal training, but this can be prohibitive cost-wise, and so self-study courses can be an effective middle ground to achieve the desired results.
These courses invariably use videos and/or audio that teach you vocal exercises and warm up techniques designed to increase your lung capacity and help you learn how to breathe properly for singing. They also help you increase your vocal range and learn how to sing fluidly across that range. A good self-study course should include software to capture your singing so that you can gauge your progress, such as Singorama.
If this an option you are exploring, be sure to do a little research before diving in. Check the reviews written about the course, as others who have used it can give you valuable insight to the effectiveness of that course, and how well they did will give you an indication of how easy it will be for you to learn singing using it yourself.
These self-study singing courses can be found online, at your neighborhood library or book shop.
Learn Singing with the Professionals
You may prefer to have some individual training and want to sign up for singing lessons with a music teacher.Check the local music community or perhaps you know someone who has also had singing lessons who can recommend someone to you.
If your budget does not cover voice lessons, you could find a choir at your local school, church or community center.
At least you will be able to learn from a tutor and the other choir members and develop your singing voice that way.
Learn Singing - going on to Advanced Techniques
Your self-study course or your singing teacher can help you learn advanced techniques such as developing a vibrato, extending into your falsetto range and refining your head voice. You can also learn to read music and transpose songs into different keys to make them easier to sing.
If singing is your desire, then you can learn singing easily at home yourself, or with the help of a music teacher or voice coach.
The main thing is to enjoy doing it.
It should be fun to learn singing, as by it's nature singing is a joyful sound.
The more you practice using your voice, the more confident you will become!
