When you were young you learned you first language without even knowing it. If you are reading this, I can assume that your first language is English. Think about it, when you saw a red ball, you didn't know what it was, you just found out somehow that it was a red ball. As the years went on, you learned more and more.
In high school, you probably had to take a few language courses. As we all know, the trick to anything in high school is to learn it for the test, and then forget it. Now, we are adults and our minds work a bit differently. To tell you the truth, our minds work in the exact opposite way (in relation to language) than they did when we were young.
