How Many Bookmarks Can You Have?

If you want to learn how to make a bookmark for a book, you're in the right place. To date I have over 50 bookmarks (I'm a bookmark collector as an avid reader).

Some are store bought, others are hand-made, yet others are simply traded with other bookmark lovers. When I see something interesting in the stores, I buy 2-3 pieces of the same to trade away. I know that other bookmark lover friends will love them, and they will send me their extra beautiful bookmarks.

The picture here is just a small part of my bookmark collection. Quite colorful, isn't it?

While buying bookmarks is the easiest way to acquire a nice selection, there is nothing like making your own bookmark using various crafting techniques.

In this article I will give you some tips on different creative ways of making your own reading bookmarks.

How To Make Your Own Bookmark

make your own bookmarkMaking a bookmark for a book is fun, however which method do you use? There are so many different ways to make bookmarks, we'd be sitting here all day and night just to list and explain them all.

This is why before making a book mark, you have to take into account what you know. What skills you have? Are you good with crafts, and if yes, what is it that you mostly know to do and like to do?

To date I have made several bookmarks using different bookmark making techniques. I have made beaded bookmarks, bookmark thongs, parchment craft bookmarks, papercrafts bookmarks and simple printed out ones from computer bookmark templates. I've even made once an origami bookmark, but that was not as easy as other ways I've attempted in the past.

Let's discuss some of the best and easiest ways to make a bookmark and I'll give you some online places with further tips, designs and templates that you can use to make your own bookmarks for a book.

Don't forget

You can use any materials for making your own bookmarks for books. You are only limited by your own imagination!

Print Out Bookmarks - Free Printable Bookmarks

print out bookmarksMaybe the easiest way to make your own bookmark is to print it out from a bookmark template.

In the image is one of the earliest Christmas bookmarks I've made a couple of years ago. Nestle had an online customizable form where you simply added your name and any quote that you liked, and printed out.

This bookmark is printed on slightly thicker paper than the regular and I've placed it in a bookmark sleeve for extra protection. This bookmark has always served me well.

If you have kids, you can include them in the fun. There are even coloring bookmarks that you simply print out and give to your child to color before adding the book mark to its sleeve.

An additional idea - if you have some cereal boxes with interesting designs, you can have your kids cut them out and use them as bookmarks.

Below are some online places with bookmark templates that you can use to print out your own. Some of them are customizable.

Beaded Bookmarks

Beaded bookmarks are quite popular not only with kids but also adults. If you like beading, making jewelry, then you will especially love this way of making your own bookmark for a book.

However even if you're not a beader, you can make a beaded bookmark. All you need to do is really string the beads on a cord (hemp cord works great). You will need some interesting beads (you can even make themed bookmarks with different colored beads, one for each season) and a cord that you will string the beads onto.

Some people even make bookmark thongs (also called bookmark tongs) which are basically thongs purchased at places like Amazon, at the end of which you can string your own beads. Quite a fun activity actually.

Here are a few places that teach you how to make various beaded bookmarks.

Useful Tip

If you are making jewelry with beads, you will have a great assortment of left over beads of all sizes and colors. Use your imagination to combine some of these beads in the most unusual and interesting combinations for your bookmarks.

Page Corner Bookmarks

page corner bookmarksPage corner bookmarks are fun to make. They are not your typical flat, long bookmark that you see. A page corner bookmark only covers the corner of one page. It's quite small.

The supplies to make such a bookmark are easily found in crafts stores. You mostly need some card stock (a heavier type of paper), scissors, rulers, pencils, some glues and some page corner bookmark templates.

These are really fun to make and fast too. I have even seen page corner bookmarks made from envelopes! (great idea since you can use the corner of the envelope to embellish to your heart's content).

So here are some great places that teach you how to make page corner bookmarks. Have fun!

Origami Bookmarks

origami bookmarkOrigami bookmarks are fun, but I have to admit, I was never good at folding Origami. But if you like folding paper, this one will be for you!

Most origami bookmarks are also corner bookmarks as opposed to full length bookmarks. You can use your paper scraps from scrapbooking to create some gorgeous looking origami pieces. They are usually quite stylish and eye catching.

And just imagine, you use no glue for this type of bookmark. Except paper you might also use a pair of scissors, but for the most part, that's it.

Additional Ideas On How To Make A Bookmark For A Book

making a bookmarkWhile these are the most popular bookmark making techniques, there are many others that people have found to work. Below I present just a few more of them, for a wider variety of options.

One of the easiest ways to make a bookmark is to glue a charm on a piece of carstock. To make it more fun, choose a cardstock that is embossed like in the image attached.

This one was an earlier attempt of mine (see my not-so-straight cutting with the scissors). But I quite like it.

Then you use some stronger glue to glue a charm onto the paper. I used an "M" charm because as initial for my name.

You can use anything else that you might find, however. Also you can make this bookmark as long or short as you want (mine is about half a page long).

Wooden Bookmarks

wooden bookmarksThese are also fun to make. You can use real wood sheets (thin ones) or fake boards like I used for this particular piece here.

If you have woodworking skills (I don't), then you can use real wood. Otherwise, do like I did here and use a thin sheet that doesn't need any tools for drilling or hammering.

Again I used charms, this time one at each end of the bookmark. This one is really long so a regular mass market paperback fits within the space ended by the charms.

Magnetic Bookmarks

magnetic bookmarksMagnetic bookmarks are also fun to have. While I have never made one, I've received a few from friends and I love them! The idea here is that you glue a piece of magnet onto cardstock, on the back.

There are several megnetic bookmark templates that you can use for this type of creation.

I haven't made bookmarks since I was a kid. I should really consider it. My favorite bookmark type is a bungee so I don't lose the bookmark when I toss the book in my bag.
