How to Make a Cake Car | How to Make a Cake Car Topper

Here is a tutorial on how to make a cake car . I was recently asked to make a cake car topper for a 50th birthday cake. I have a hard time drawing a car let alone making a cake look like a car! Like most people, when I have a problem I Google it to find my answer.
I came acrossed a couple of tutorials on how to make a cake car but I needed to make a 2010 Camaro cake car topper. I eventually had to flip back and forth between different pages and pictures to help me make my topper. I thought it was a pain in the rear to continuously flip between different web pages so I figured I'd make my own tutorial.

I decided to make my cake car topper out of rice krispy treats but the same principal can be applied with cake.

3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows
- OR -
4 cups miniature marshmallows
6 cups Rice Krispies

1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

3. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS:
In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above. Microwave cooking times may vary.

****TIP****
To make the rice krispies a little smoother measure out the 6 c and put in a plastic bag. Use a rolling pin to break up the rice krispies a bit. DON'Tmake them into dust, just crunch them up a little bit.

Once your rice krispies are made grease your hands well and place rice krispies into a loaf pan. Let stand for 15-30 mins, pop out of pan and let harden. I let mine sit out for an hour.

How to Carve Car Cake Topper

How to crave a cake car

Use a serrated knife to carve your car. Follow the line of your car cut out. If you make a mistake just squish the rice krispies back together.
Add any protruding details to the car ie) spoilers, indents ect.
Cut out your wheel wells.
Use the cut off pieces of rice krispies treats (RKT) to make your wheels, make them smaller than the actual holes as you will be putting fondant on them. I forgot about adding the fondant so my wells looked a little oversized!
Once you have your car carved, cut a pieceof cake board to fit underneath the car, attach with royal icing.

Covering Cake Car with Fondant

Step One: Buttercream Icing the Cake Car

how to cover cake car with fondant

Before you put your fondant on your cake car you must cover the car in buttercream icing. This acts as a "glue" for your fondant. It also helps to make the car have a smoother finish.
Cover your wheels with buttercream as well.

Step Two: Applying the Fondant

Cocering your cake car with fondant

Roll your fondant out no more than a 1/4" in thickness. You need the fondant to be a little thicker than you would use to put on a cake. Having the fondant thicker will help with a smoother finish but it also makes drawing details on your car easier. Cover wheels with black fondant. I bought my black fondant as it takes some time to get the fondant a real black.
Smoothe out fondant with clean fingers.

Adding Tires and Windows to Your Cake Car

Start adding details to your Car. I added the wheels first then started adding windows, bumper details, lights. Use royal icing to attach the wheels.

*****TIP*******
IF YOU ARE USING BLACK FONDANT FOR DETAILS ON YOUR CAR WEAR GLOVES!!! The black fondant will tint your fingers black and this WILL transfer to your car fondant when you touch it.

Personalize the car.
I wish I had Edible Markers to write on the license plate number, it would have made it look so much neater. I had to use food gel and a tooth pick. They'll be one of my next investments!

Add rims to the wheels.
To get the "chrome" look I used gray fondant as my base. I used pearl luster dust milxed with vodka and a little bit of black food gel and painted it on.

Completed Cake Car Topper

Once you have finished your topper let it dry for a day or two depending on the heat and humidity. It was very humid when I made this so my fondant looked wet.

When your topper is dry use royal icing to attach to the top of your cake.
