How to Make Creative Scarecrows that Make People Laugh

Find One Item to Spark a Scarecrow Theme

Most scarecrows are boring. You hardly even notice them. But I've come up with some easy ways to make scarecrows that make people stop in their tracks. My best tip: use old clothes to come up with a funny theme . . . and then take it to the limit. One item around the house can inspire a whole theme. Once you add tons of details, you have a prize-winning scarecrow.

Creative Scarecrow Ideas Can Come From Anything

Bobe Bryant Scarecrow

Look around your house for the one item that will inspire your theme. For example, my son had an old Kobe Bryant shirt. Aha! A scary Kobe with a hoop! I added his basketball shoes that no longer fit. Next I made a hoop out of a toy hoop and a pole. I used a skeleton as my body. To get movement, we went to Home Depot and got heavy but bendable wire. That way we could position him. Very cool. The ball is a lightweight fake pumpkin I got at Michaels.

Add a Scarecrow Sign

Skate Crow Scarecrow

figure skating scarecrowMy daughter's old figure skates inspired "Skate Crow." Isn't she lovely? We used a couple boards to get her to stand up with her arms out. We stuck her leg in an old umbrella stand, then covered it with cloth to make it look like ice. A trip to the thrift store and some time at the sewing machine resulted in her skating outfit. Lots of detail.

Ghost Wrangler

Cowboy and Horse Scarecrow

An old saddle was what gave me the idea for my cowboy scarecrow. He's the sheriff in town, rounding up the ghosts with his rope.

Scary Ghost!

Ghost for Halloween

The ghost is made from an inexpensive mask I got at a dollar stores draped with two layers of gauzy fabric.
