How to Make a Diaper Cake
Baby Diaper Cake "Recipe"
As with any good recipe, feel free to tweak it to suit your taste.
- Serves: One, unless it's twins!
- Prep Time: Depends on how you shop.
- Total Time: Assembly takes a half hour or so.
This is the recipe I used to make the cake you see in the picture. It was for my cousin. When I visited after the baby was born, she had it as a decoration in the nursery. She thought it was too cute to take apart. Luckily I used onesies in a 3-6 month size so the baby didn't outgrow them before he had a chance to use them. You may want to keep that in mind while shopping for your "ingredients". You can even pick "ingredients" that are on the new mom's gift registry.
Ingredients
- Receiving Blankets - I used 4
- Onesies - I used a 4 or 5 pack
- socks - this cake fit 3 pairs
- toy that will fit in the center - this is sometimes the hardest thing to find
- Cloth Diapers of course - wouldn't be able to call it a Diaper cake other wise
- Diaper pins - I used eight in the cake pictured above.
Instructions
What I first do is open all the packages up and decide which blanket will be the outermost layer on the cake. A simple print is nice, but you don't want something too busy or it will detract from the overall look. Next, fold all the blankets, diapers and onesies so that they are abut the same height. Take the centerpiece toy and wrap the first diaper around it so that part of the toy sticks out of the top. Continue wrapping the diapers, onsies and blankets alternately, saving the receiving blanket set aside for the outside layer for last. Once the last layer is wrapped, secure it with two diaper pins at the top and bottom. It is cute already, but adding some sock "flowers" will just give it that extra flair. Fold each little sock and pull the toe back up the center for a rose-like appearance. Use a safety pin to make a stem which you can push between the layers to secure it. Once the last sock is in place, step back and admire your work. You can wrap it up, or for a more "cake" feel, buy a cake box with a window in the top to use to present your gift to that special mom-to-be.
