Finding Fairies in your Garden

What is a fairy? There are many different theories on this - some call them elementals, some call them nature spirits, and some call them fallen angels. But the fairies of the garden are, on the whole, a benevolent family of nature spirits, tending the flowers and trees, playing with the birds and insects, and trying to keep the heart of the wild in the ever-growing urban sprawl that mankind is forcing upon Mother Nature.

That said, they can be mistrustful of humans because of their concrete jungles and disregard for nature, so there are numerous things that one must do in order to encourage them to show themselves in your garden, and believe that you are a friend of the fairies, not an enemy!

I love fairies and actively encourage them into both my home and my garden. They fill the household with laughter, joy and magic - and if you work hard to make a beautiful garden for them, they bring good fortune too! Not just in the money sense - fairies who bond with humans will bring protection, romance and luck to name but a few things.

How to Design your Fairy Garden

If you really want to fill your garden with the fairy folk, then you must remember that they relish the beautiful, raw, wild side of nature. They are not impressed by manicured lawns or weed-free, pest-free borders!

You will need to think about:

* What is manageable for you

* The shape and size of your garden

* The type of soil in your garden

* Colour schemes

* What local wildlife you can attract

A fairy garden is more than just fairy-friendly wildflowers and an offering of milk or honey. The garden needs to be eco-friendly, organic, and preferably at least part-wild, with lots of hiding places for the fairies to play in.

You also need to get used to allowing and even encouraging insects and other "pests" into your garden, as this will put you in good stead with the fey. So think damp, dark places and rotting logs! The more birds, butterflies and bees you have, the better!

But don't forget, this also includes everything from spiders and ants to pigeons and magpies, so if there are certain creepy crawlies that you really can't stand, or need to keep away from your vegetables, then make sure you deal with them organically and humanely. The fairies will thank you for trying!

Make Fairy Garden Friends

Learn to encourage the small folk into your garden to share their wisdom and playfulness!

You can coax the fairies out to play by sitting in your garden and meditating, in order to connect with them. It also helps to leave little offerings such as food, sweet things or gifts. So think about designing a place in your garden where you can sit and look for fairies, and also a place to leave their gifts.

Make friends with the flora and fauna too. The more you talk to the flowers, birds and trees, the more likely you are to meet a fairy!

I find that just sitting quietly for a while, listening to the birds, gets me into the right state of mind for opening up my psychic ability and communicating with the fey. Hang on! You're probably thinking. I'm not psychic, how can I see fairies? Don't worry. Even if you can't physically see or hear them, it is possible to get to know when fairies are about. They leave little signs, or reward your hard work by blessing a previously wilting plant with renewed life!

Flowers to Make a Fairy Garden

The best flowers for making a fairy garden are those that are native to your area. Wildflowers are a wonderful attractant, as are any that appeal to bees, butterflies and other insects. Scented flowers, herbs and sacred trees are also important.

The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies

If you don't have much knowledge of plants or don't know where to start, why not take inspiration from Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies?

Once you've got some ideas of what plants YOU like, you will need to grow flowers the fairies like. I grow herbs, fruits and vegetables too. Don't forget to share your harvest with the birds... for the sake of some lost fruit, the fairies will reward you! I learned how to take care of all my plants thanks to these guides:

In return for all my hard work, the fairies bless me with bountiful harvests year after year!

Decorating a Fairy Garden

There are lots of ways to decorate your fairy garden. Here are just a few ideas:

* Pretty birdhouses
* Tinkling windchimes
* Fairy statues
* Natural objects such as shells and stones
* Fairy lights

I like to hide fairy statues in the foliage, peeping out from every nook and cranny. The fairies love this - it makes them feel right at home! You may even find that one or two of your proudly placed objects have moved about from time to time - this is the fairies tinkering with their own idea of garden design!

I loved decorating my fairy garden, and now you can too!

    I started to become curious and interested to see real fairies recently and also because I was inspired by some shadows or light that pass by through the corners of my eyes. Is it a spirit or fairies? That is why I want to have a nice garden within an already established simple garden in the backyard to attract fairies. Hopefully someone can help me as well to see fairies!
