How to Make a Heavy Hula Hoop
A list of instructional websites
- Jason Unbound and "How to Make a Hula Hoop"
- This gentleman posted one of the first sites on how to make a hulahoop. To this day, it's still a great resource, with simple instructions and step-by-step photos.
- Choosing Hoop Weight and Hoop Size
- If you want some intelligent strategy and insight on what kind of heavy hoop you might wish to buy or make, Christa Giles of Vancouver has an excellent site for selecting hula hoop weight, size and dimension.
- A Photo Essay on How to Make an Adult Size Hoop
- Photo by photo, the folks at Portero Hill Hoop Factory in San Francisco literally show you how to make your own heavy-duty hulahoop using irrigation tubing, a ratcheting PVC cutter, a connector (coupling) and bright-colored electrical tape. This photo essay is found directly on hooping.org, an excellent website resource for beginning (and experienced) hoopers.
- DIY: Make a Hula Hoop
- Merlin at PSI Hoops explains in detailed, step-by-step instructions how to make your own hoolahoop, how to make a water-weighted hoop and even how to make a lighted hoop. His site is quite informative, and he also sells hoops if you'd like to buy one of his creations.

Colorful Tape for Decorating your HoolaHoop
- Easy-to-use Vinyl (Electrical) Tape
- If you're new to hoop taping, you may want to start with a small supply of vinyl tape. Sticking with the 1-inch tape for overall coverage is a good start. The smaller widths are good for color accents. Most folk find the 2-inch tape unwieldy for decorating hula hoops.
- Add Color, Weight & Texture with Gaffer Tape
- Gaffer tape is a fabric tape, available in many colors, including some bright fluorescent colors that glow under UV light. The gaffer tape is also heavy, adding more weight and a wee bit of cushioning.
- Bright Duct Tape for all your Hooping Designs
- My favorite tape is bright-colored duct tape. It's just a bit shiny and makes for a really pretty hoop, especially when I order it in the brighter colors. It comes in a one-inch width for making beautiful custom hoop decorations.
- Harness and Color Coding Tape
- The folks at Identi-tape.com, the most hooper-friendly online tape store I know, also recommend the 3/4-inch vinyl color coding and wire harness tape. The tape comes in 16 colors.
Prismatic, Glitter, Holographic, Mirror and Glow-in-the DarkTape
Fancy hula hoop tapes to make your creation sparkle!
- Prismatic, Holographic, Glitter & Mirror Tapes
- This stuff is a bit pricey compared to the other tapes, and well worth every glittering inch. Transform your everyday-hoops into sparkling works of art with prismatic tape, holographic tape, mirror tape and glitter tape.
- Glow-in-the-Dark Tape
- Every thought of taking your hoop to an outdoor evening party or concert? If you have, you might want to get some photoluminescent tape. These "glow-in-the-dark" tapes are non-toxic, non-radioactive, charge to any type of light and glow from 6-10 hours!

- Hi! I wanted to start hooping, and make my own hoop....but i am confused on what size irrigation tubing to get. I am 5'8'' about 125 lbs....I can hoop at the waist since I was a child, but would also like to learn some basic tricks. What would be the best size for me. I bought 100 psi 3/4'', but at the store I was debating 100 psi 1'', and then I get all confused because some people recommend 160 psi? I'm OVERWHELMED!!! and because you have to buy like 100 feet I would like to make sure I'm buying the right size for me :) Any suggestions? Tips?
Thank you for taking the time to help me!

- Hello,
I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Does anyone know of a tape supplier in my neck of the woods? I can find the primary colours but that's it.
