How to Make a Lapbook
Ranked #3,078 in Education, #73,835 overall
This page is on how to make a lapbook. Lapbooking has became popular over the last several years. Lapbooking started off as a homeschool thing and has now spread to the classroom as more classroom teachers discover the fun and education value of a lapbook. Lapbooks are easy to make, do not cost a lot of money (especially if you use free printables or Dinah Zike's methods) and they provide a lot of learning and retention for children. Lapbooks can be used from toddler age all the way through high school. This page will help you learn how to make a lapbook. Younger children will need quite a bit of help with lapbooking, but older children may be able to do them on their own.

Instructions on How to Make a Lapbook
- 1Next as you study whatever subject you are doing the lapbook on, make minibooks to go along with it. The minibooks could be printed ones that you get from a lapbooking site or a teacher's resource site, minibooks from teacher resource guides that you have copied, puzzles and games that you have folded into a minibook (folded in half and then in half again like a card) or minibooks you have made from scratch using method's that are like in Dinah Zike's books.
- 2Store all of the minibooks in a large baggie (2 gallon if you can find them) along with your lapbook folder until you have all the minibooks you desire. Do not glue them on until they are all done!
- 3When you are done with the minibooks, lay them out on the inside of the shutter fold of the filefolder. Move them around until you get them in the location that you feel looks good and that they fit. You can add a simple extension (if you need it) to your lapbook by taping (clear packing tape works best) a sheet of card stock along the top of the file folder like a flap. Basically, you lay the card stock in the middle of the inside of the file folder (so that the flaps still close around it) and run the tap across the top of both the card stock and the file folder. This should form a flap that you can lift up. Then you have room to put minibooks on the card stock, under the card stock (both on the card stock and the file folder) and on the inside of both sides of the file folder.
- 4After the minibooks are all arranged, then glue them in place. I prefer a dry glue like a scrapbooking tape, but you can use other glues, you just may get some buckling.
- 5Decorate the front! You can use stickers, die cuts, coloring pages (cut in half up the opening), or draw on the front.

This is the lady that got it all started! While she did not "invent" the lapbook, it was her minibooks that became the basis of the lapbook.
