How to Make a Living on Squidoo

The Title and URL of your lens is Important.

Once you have joined Squidoo (and if you haven't yet you can get started by clicking on where it says make your own page like this on this page - you can make any type of lens you like!) the first thing to decide is the subject of your first lens.

Google loves Squidoo but to have your lens appear high up in the search ranking the title is all important. For example you decide that your first lens is to be about cooking. A search for "cooking" in Google produces 170million results! Far too many for your lens to have a chance of appearing on the first page. However "cooking the Mediterranean way" produces just 1,770 results and gives a lens with the url www.squidoo.com/cooking-the-mediterranean-way a good chance of high ranking in Google and generating traffic and income!

It is a good idea to then find several related keyword phrases with similarly low results to use as tags for your lens. In this case "Mediterranean style cookery" produces only 5 results (although a lot of Adwords ads which is always a good sign) and "cookery from the Mediterranean" only 1 result.

Don't feel guilty about setting your payment options on your lens to 100% cash and not donating your income to charity.

The good people at Squidoo donate a percentage of all the Adsense and advertising income generated by all lenses to charity - so by making good quality, interesting lenses that attract traffic you ARE donating some of your income - even when you set 100% cash!

Is it better to make hundreds of lenses or just a few high quality lenses?

Ideally both! You don't need to go to the extreme of one lensmaster who is attempting to make a million lenses - BUT both quality and quantity do count in the income stakes.

Making lots of low quality lenses, and by this I mean just a line or two of text and then lots of money making modules or affiliate links, will not do you any good at all as they are unlikely to rise in the lens rankings and obtain much traffic.

The key is to concentrate on making one good lens - check out the top 100 to see what a good lens looks like - then repeat, repeat, repeat!

Make sure you have a comments module so visitors can leave their feedback.

Keep Updating Your Lens

Your first attempt will not usually be Perfect and you will want to change things and add other modules. Every time you make a change don't forget to Publish your lens. If, however, you believe that your lens is Perfect just as it is then every few days just add another tag or keyword and Publish - your lens will then appear updated.

Tweet your new lens on Twitter and put it on your Facebook page.

Each time you edit and republish your lens - ping it! This works in the same way as a blog and will increase your traffic and lensrank.

Autopinger is a good service but is sometimes slow and some of the pings fail.

Pingoat is the quickest and easiest ping service to use.
