Want to Make a Montage of Your Gameplay?

Have you ever wanted to make a montage of your best Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii gameplay? All of your insane no scopes, 360 headshots, collaterals, clutches, etc in one epic video set to your favorite music. This is a great way to show other people your skill at the games you play or just to make something that you're proud of. It's fun and not too difficult.

I'm here to tell you how you make one of these!

I'll go step by step to show you what it takes to make a video game montage. Your montage could range from very simple to extremely over-the-top effects and transitions. As with many things, the more extravagant the finished product, the more expensive tools you'll need. Though with a reasonable price you can still make something really cool that when finished you'll enjoy immensely.

Equipment Needed

-Capture Card: The most common are the Pinnacle Dazzle and the Hauppauge HD PVR
-Video Editing Software: Some Dazzles come with editing software named Pinnacle Studio which is a nice step up from Windows Movie Maker, the editing software that comes with all windows computers. For more expensive options that include more features there is Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere just to name a couple. I personally use a Dazzle with Pinnacle Studio 12.
-A/V Cable
-Splitters: You only need these if your TV does not have an output.
-TV
-Console
-Music

How to Make the Montage

Step 1: I'll assume you've already installed the software that goes with the capture card you have. After you've done that hook the capture card and console up to the TV. There are many tutorials for setting up the Dazzle and the Hauppauge HD PVR on YouTube if you can't figure out how to do it.

Step 2: Record your gameplay. I suggest you start recording at the beginning of each match and stop recording at the end of each match. That way you can delete the recording if you didn't get any usable montage footage. This saves space on your computer's hard drive. It's also a good idea at this time to pick out the music you want to use because the length of the song determines how much footage you will need. Try not using music that is overly played in montages. It gets quite stale.

Step 3: Edit the footage that you have captured. Not much I can say about this step. It's up to you how far you want to go and how creative you want to be.

Step 4: Add the music that you have selected to the edited footage. Whether you add the same music to the intro and the credits is up to you.

Step 5: Render the edited footage. This takes all the separate parts of the editing and creates one final film.

Step 6: Upload your montage! Now that you're grand creation is finally complete, upload it to the site of your choosing. The most popular one of course being YouTube and the one where you will most likely get the best exposure.

You're Done!

Thank you for reading this article. I hope it has helped you with the creation of your new montage. Remember to keep making more if it's what you enjoy doing. The more practice you get the better you will become. Your editing skills being the most notable improvement. Nearly every game can be used to make a montage. It's just up to you to find out how to make it work. So get creative! Once again, thank you for reading and good luck with your montages!
