The Secret to Avoiding Jelly Soaked Bread

There is a little secret to making a great peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a brown bag lunch, and the key is in the construction. When building any structure or preparing a meal, a good plan with quality materials will yield the best results.

This is also the case when making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch and preparing them ahead of time, either early in the morning or perhaps the night before. Spread on a piece of bread and left on it's own, the jelly will soak into the bread and the result is a mushy sandwich. Whether you use smooth peanut butter (the kid's favorite) or super chunky (my personal choice), one simple step makes the difference between a tasty PB & J sandwich or jelly soaked bread.

And for a change of pace, I often add a few surprise ingredients to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Maybe that's why kids always ask me to make the peanut butter sandwiches for their school lunch (sorry, Mom!)

How To Make A Peanut Butter Sandwich

Any good sandwich starts with the bread. There is a lot to be said for the high bran and wheat breads, and these make good cold cut sandwiches. But for a great peanut butter sandwich, good old plain white bread is still the best. Around our house, we like a soft Country White the best.

Start by spreading a thin layer of peanut butter evenly on to one of the slices. Now here is the secret: Spread another thin layer of peanut butter on to the second slice of bread. The two layers of peanut butter act as barriers, preventing the soft bread from over-absorbing the moisture from the jelly. Now, add a thin layer of your favorite jelly. Without the Peanut Butter Barrier on both slices, the bread absorbs too much of the jelly and turns the sandwich to mush.

The basic peanut butter sandwich makes a good foundation, and adding a few surprise ingredients can take the ubiquitous PB&J to new levels. Marshmallow Fluff is a sweet and sticky addition, but if the extra sugar is a concern, try substituting a bit of honey or a drop of real maple syrup. A few slices of banana will increase both the vitamin and the flavor content. For a treat, add a few bittersweet chocolate chips; it only takes a few chips to transform the flavor into something the kids will really notice. Instead of chips or pretzels on the side, add them into the sandwich for a bit of crunch. Better yet, a thin layer of breakfast cereal still enhances the crunch factor while adding vitamins and minerals.

Or for brown bagging a PB&J lunch to the office for your lunch, try adding a few strips of crispy bacon or a couple of shakes of red pepper flakes.

“For a Toasty Twist, Grill Your Favorite Peanut Butter Sandwich”

Elvis Presley's Grilled Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich

Serves: 1
Prep Time: 10 minutes

The King loved this simple sandwich recipe, and he may have also liked a variation that included pieces of crispy bacon. According to rumors, the Graceland kitchen was always stocked with creamy peanut butter and bananas, just in case Elvis wanted a sandwich.

Ingredients

Creamy peanut butter
1 - Ripe banana
2 - Slices of plain
white sandwich bread
1 - tablespoon of butter

Instructions

Lightly toast the slices of white bread, then spread a thin coating of creamy peanut butter on to one side of the bread slices.

In a small bowl, mash the banana with a fork. Spread the mashed banana on one slice of peanut buttered bread, and cover with the other slice. Press the bread slices together.

In a small pan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Grill the sandwich until golden brown, and flip and grill the other side.

Remove from the pan, and slice the peanut butter & banana sandwich on the bias. Enjoy!
