How To Format A Recipe Lens

Basics of formatting your recipe lenses

One of the most difficult things for me to figure out was how to best lay out some of my recipes. I looked at several online, both on Squidoo and on actual recipe sites, and used it as a guide for my own.

After doing several, it was suggested to me that I create a "How-To" lens to help others who were unsure of where to begin like I was. It took me awhile, but here it is.

This is meant to be a guide. It's up to you to make your pages your own; with the information provided here you should have no problem in doing that!

What To Include On A Recipe Lens

How to lay it out

When you search for a recipe there are specific things you're expecting to see.

Let's break it down:

Ingredient List - Include specific measurements for how much of a particular ingredient is needed. If you're unsure, or it's a matter of taste, include this information.

Also make sure to include an explanation of any unusual ingredients.

Preparation Instructions - Directions for how to prepare the recipe should be to the point, and simply put. If the recipe requires a special pan or gadget to prepare it, make sure you include that information.

Serving Suggestions - What do you serve with your recipe to compliment it? This is a great place to use the featured lens module!

Pictures - Do you have pictures taken during the preparation process? As it's cooking? Or as it's ready to be served? The photo gallery is a great way to show them off!

Optional - Relevant videos and any special tools/gadgets your recipe requires.

Make Your Lens Profitable

Amazon mods are your friend!

For starters, realize that when people land on your recipe lens, they really aren't interested in buying anything. When they arrive, all your reader wants is a great tasting, easy-to-follow recipe and maybe a few photos. But, in order for you to earn lots of money from your recipe, you need to sell them something.

How do you do that? If they aren't shopping, how do you convince them that they need to buy something?

This is where the Amazon Spotlight module becomes your best friend.

Use the Amazon Spotlight module to show your reader that ONE product that will help them prepare, serve or eat your recipe, quicker ... easier ... or better! It works best if the item is something you actually own and use yourself. Or, at least, if the product is something you would love to have.

Write the Amazon Spotlight description in the form of a cooking tip, not a sales pitch. Give your personal reason for choosing that particular cooking product above any others. Don't list hundreds of the same type of product for your readers to choose from. They don't have the time to sort through: they probably want to be wowed by your single best recommendation.

Last but not least, try a Featured Lenses module at the bottom, or punctuated between your recipe tips, to point your readers to more of your recipe lenses. Once you've got someone drooling over your panini recipes, once they've read your first lens and trust you to deliver, chances are good they'll be hungry for more lenses from you.

Keep Your Information Relevant

Some do's and don'ts

For example, you've created a lens about your favorite apple pie recipe. It's important to keep all of the links apple pie recipe related.

Do add a duel about homemade versus store bought apple pie.
Do add photos and videos of apple pies and apple pie making.
Do post links to other apple pie recipes found on Squidoo
Do post links to apple recipes found on the web.
Do include Amazon and eBay links to the best apple pie pans, cookbooks, and utensils.

Don't add a lens you've made about HBO movies.
Don't add an article about Washington.
Don't post a banner to every affiliate program you belong to.
Don't add links to all of your friend's lenses.
Don't add a YouTube video of your favorite song.

Really targeted links on your lens will help the search engines find your lens!

Ways To Format Your Recipe Lens

Make yours stand out from the others!

Have all the key components on your page, but it still doesn't look the way you had hoped? I felt the same way, so went in search of ways to try and make them stand out from all the others.

I have found that making use of borders and backgrounds, in addition to putting the recipes on an actual recipe card, gave me the look I was after.
