I find it to be more convenient and efficient to have the tools and know how on hand in case something happens to your current cable(s) or you relocate your router and need a cable made up. The retail price of manufactured cables can be pricey and overcharged. You can now Do It Yourself. Hope you enjoy this tutorial lots more to come.

Description

As you may know by now most people just order new cat5 cables when there Ethernet cable heads break or get damaged. The fact is you could save some money by just buying a splice kit and repairing it yourself. You can search http://www.Amazon.com for a Installers Starter Kit: including Cat5e Crimper, RJ45 Connectors, and Cable Tester ( price ranges from 15$ to 40$ ) depending. The configuration is for a Straight through connection which is used for different layer device to device such as a computer to a hub, or router to a computer, ect. A cross over connection is for two like devices such as PC to PC which is made up a bit different. I will have a video coming soon for that as well.

What is this for?

This may help new installers, or just people curious to get into a trade where this may be applied. I think it would best be for home users who have networks and are tired of buying new cables when a RJ45 head lock pin snaps off or gets damaged. This will even help gamers who have a xbox 360, playstation 3 or other devices where Ethernet cables are there source of connecting to the internet. Some connectivity issues like high ping, high latency and bad connection speeds / communication, may be a result of a damaged Ethernet cable or not a good solid connection from the RJ45 head to device.

Many Ethernet cables provided by your Internet Service Provider are junk. You'll notice that the plastic tabs on the connectors will fall off over a short time, and they are only 4 ft. to 6 ft. long. You don't need to go buy over priced cables anymore. You can know see how easy it is to solve this problem on your own.

Enjoy this no nonsense tutorial and start making your own good Ethernet patch cables at just a fraction of the price it would cost you to buy it pre-manufactured.

What is Cat 5 Cable?

Category 5 cable (Cat 5) is a twisted pair high signal integrity cable type. This type of cable is used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet and ATM, and is also used to carry many other signals such as telephony and video. Most Category 5 cables are unshielded (UTP), relying on the twisted pair design for noise rejection. Category 5 has been superseded by the Category 5e specification.
