How to Make and Use Your Own Zazzle Quick Create Template
Ranked #2,824 in Arts & Design, #40,524 overall
I wanted to get serious about my Zazzle business and add more products quickly.
I knew about Quick Create, and I've even used it a few times, but it offers way too many products for me to customize at one sitting, and since it's hard for me to tell one shape from another in the paper goods, I am never sure what I'm doing. I decided it was time to learn to make my own templates with the only the products I most wanted to sell. I did a search in the Zazzle forum for information and found this tutorial from Shopaholic Chick. It gave me a place to start, but I had trouble with some of the pictures which were outdated. So I will use my pictures and write down my preparation and steps. I hope this will be easy for you to follow.
To start, I will make a template with the image I used for this module.
Do you Zazzle?
Preparation, or what to do before you start making your Zazzle quick create template.
Here's what I learned to do.
Before you start, you need to get organized. Decide what you want in your template. I took Shopaholic Chick's suggestion about making my templates by product shapes. What you see above is the hidden folder in which my Square Template for my cawinecountry store lives. The last products straggled into it today. I started this template a couple of days ago, but two products hadnt' made it by this morning, though the rest posted yesterday. I waited until evening and they still weren't there. I was patient until this morning, and decided to make those two products again. They finally posted tonight. So I used it to publish the products live. The image will link (I hope) to the folder where these products are live. You will notice in the image above that all the products in this template have the symbol of invisibility (red circle around eye.) I like to make all folders invisible until the products appear. It sometimes takes a day for them to get where they belong, but tonight it only took a couple of hours for another design I made tonight to find its folder.
So far in this shop I have finished two templates -- Round and Square. Before I started making the templates I created a folder called "Templates." Then I put the name of each template I planned to create into that folder, and I made them all hidden. You must make the folder homes first, because they need to be there when you make your template. So I have the hidden folder "Templates, " and so far I have five template folders inside: Rectangular Horizontal, Rectangular Vertical, Round, Square, and Oval. In my barbsbooks store, I also have one called "tea sets" to hold the new teapots, candy jars, pitchers, and jumbo mugs. I also include a regular mug so that a complete set can be made. I do include these products in my rectangular horizontal template, but it doesn't always work with some designs on these products and I have to delete them. I also find it's useless to include a tie most of the time.
So, first make your template folder and hide it. Then make a hidden folder for each template you plan to make before you make it.
What is your experience with Quick Create?
We will create my Rectangular Horizontal Template
Here are the products I included in my rectangular horizontal template: tote bag, postcard, blank greeting card, postage, mug, travel mug, stein, iPhone-Speck case, iPad case, laptop sleeve, mousepad, large notepad, puzzle, flexible magnet, plaque, gel mousepad, bone china mug, candy jar, teapot, pitcher, rectangular sticker, stationery, speaker. You may want to include more specific cases, since they aren't interchangeable between phone types. I see I forgot speaker, so I will add it to this template. I am now going to write this list so I can check off each product as I make it. My list has 23 items on it.
Now comes the most tedious part of this. I will need to make one of each item and customize it just as I would if I were just making one. About the only real difference is that I will make the image a template object, I will hide the image in my hidden folder, and I will make sure I save the product as a template. We will go over the creation of one of these products, but you will also want to watch the video below -- especially if you use this template to make stationery, where your image will fit into a very small space on the top or bottom.
This is a video tutorial on making your Quick Create template.
Please refer to this image as you read the instructions on creating the tote bag.
I will first create a tote bag.
- 1First I go to manage store and click the products tab. Then I go to the create tab at the top and mouse over it to see the product list and click the product I want -- bags. Or you can click "all" at the bottom if your product isn't on the drop down menu. The new products may not be on the product page yet, or they may have finally put them there before you finally read this. I will include a link list near the end with the links to the pages that have links to those new product creation pages, and I will try to keep this page updated as new products are added.
- 2When you get to the product page, click that you want to create the product. Then you will land on the page for creating the product. Close the "Get Started" box because the video suggested it. I'm pretty obedient.
- 3Click "add image" and select the image you plan to use in this template. I already have mine on my Zazzle image page, but you can also pull it from your computer.
- 4Click the little gears in the editing area and when the menu drops down, check the bottom square, "Make this a template object." You can also check the top square if you are using a jpg image and you want white spaces to show as transparent. Do not check the middle square to lock the image. (Save that for the actual products you create with your template later) When you click "Make this a template object," make sure both the top and bottom template boxes that appear say "image 1." In one of my templates something weird happened (couldn't have been me) that changed this to "image 2" on my mug and if you read to the end you will see what resulted from that mistake. It's so easy to miss on little detail!
-
5Choose your style and color. Then edit your image on that style to make sure it fits properly. What you do here will be repeated on the objects you create from the template. If you add any text, make sure it's also a template object.
When you finish, click "post for sale" at the bottom.
Post Product for Sale Page
The Image
I was only able to include half of this into a screen shot, so I chose the bottom half. Please refer to this when you read the section below.
Instructions for Posting Product for Sale
-
1Fill in your title, description, and design options. I will use the title "oak 2" for all products in this template. I will also follow Shopaholic Chick's idea of using a single letter, "a," as the description, since it will, of course, change with each image. This should be the same for all products in your template, I think. I kept them the same to be on the safe side.
I normally leave "all styles and colors" in the drop down box below the description, unless an option just won't work except in a certain, shape, size, or color. - 2Select a category. You must do this, and it should be the same for each product in your template. After selecting travel->continents and regions -> United States -> California -> Paso Robles on my first template, I discovered it really wasn't necessary to go to all that trouble since you still had to fill in the whole category again when you use the template to make products for sale. So, I'm only going to select the main category, "Nature and Landscapes," this time around, and save myself a lot of work. Those five category clicks get tedious by the time you get to your fifth product.
- 3The store category is very important, so pay careful attention to it -- especially if you have more than one store. Make sure the right store is showing. Then be sure to change the Store Category to the file you have made. This will go in my Templates -> Rectangular Horizontal category. Every product for this template must go here. if it doesn't, it won't work. So double check this and your main store category before clicking "Post It" on the bottom of the page.
- 4Tags will be easy here. I use one -- tag. It's short and sweet. It's easy to remove when I actually use my template to make products. You must enter a tag here.
-
5Additional information is also a very important part of the process. Select your suitable audience. Then, be sure you click "Hidden" instead of "Public" because you won't want to show the template itself to the world. You can still make the products public when you use the template.
Now I've got a problem. I should have another line under Product Visibility that lets me check "Make this a Template. I need to find out why this isn't showing up, since it needs to be checked. Found it. I had forgotten to check the "make this a template object" while I was still on the product creation page. I have corrected the picture now to show the correct options on this page. Check "Make this a Template."
I also suggest you check the "Show customize button" option. It will give your customers the opportunity to get just what they want and that should bring you more sales. -
6Select your royalty.
Check that you have the right to publish this product.
Post your products for sale and wait for your template to appear in your hidden folder home
I just posted my first product for the new template.
Only 22 more to go.

Let's see what you've learned.
This should help you figure out if you've gotten the most important parts of this straight.
General Hints on Using Your New Templates
Using your template is very much like using the Quick Create template supplied by Zazzle, but should be faster because you've already gotten most images to look the way they should on each product on the template copy. Here are some tricks I use to make customizing and creating any products go a bit faster .
First, as I create, I keep a file handy on my computer or in Google Docs that contains information and quotes I use repeatedly. I keep my Zazzle referral links there, and quotes I like and might want to put on products. I also have the referral link information I like to include, and copyright information. I keep this in one line for postcards, like this. http://www.zazzle.com/cawinecountry*© B. Radisavljevic 2012
For my barbsbooks store, I keep a series of texts to paste on the back of greeting cards, one for each collection theme. Here's an example:
Hymns of Faith Series
An Inspirational Card by
www.zazzle.com/barbsbooks*
© B. Radisavljevic 2011
Since I create a lot of cards and postcards, and this is the most tedious part of their creation, I will soon be making my own templates just for cards and postcards. So far I've been adding these as I customize when I use Quick Create, but I think I just figured out how to get them into my template. I still have to test this.
As I create each product for my template, I write down the image name, the one-word title I'm using for the template, the categories, and the tag word I will use. That's so if I'm interrupted, I will know what I did so I will keep consistent for all products. I also write down the description and tag words I expect to use on the final product. This is useful because I will sometimes make more than one template or product from the same image, and I don't want to have to think it all up again or go find a previous product from that image to copy from. If I keep everything in one place, it's easy to look at when I need it. This is the information I copied for one image I used in a template:
Title: Paso Robles Vineyard in November Color
Description: Autumn is the season when Paso Robles vineyards dress up in colorful leaves and often still are laden with grapes awaiting harvest. This picture was taken from Oakview Lane near Highway 46 West
Tags: autumn vineyards "paso robles" "colorful leaves" california "oak trees" "grape vines"
Now let's use your new template.
Refer to the image below as you read.

First, go to your account -> Products.
Click "Quick Create" at the top of your product list.
In step 1, Choose products to create. Beside "Use your own templates," click "change," unless the folder with the home you've made for your template you want to use is showing . Make sure the correct store name is selected. I was working in "barbsbooks" when I snapped these photos, so the correct name of the store is there and the template name is also correct. If you have more than one store, you might want to include the store name in front of the template folder so it will be easier to tell if you have made a mistake. I will probably change this folder name to "barbsbooks template."
In step 2, unless you are using the same image you used when you made the template, click "change" under the image, and select the image you want to use.
In step 3, for the fit/fill option, I suggest choosing "template defaults" to preserve any customizing you did when making your template.
Click the orange "Create Products" button in the bottom right corner.
Now you should be on the page where you customize your products

The image above shows that I made a mistake when I created the mug product for the template. You can see the design is different than the other products and has retained the design of the rest of the products I created for the template. I finally went back to see what was wrong, and I see that somehow I managed to have "Image 2" instead of "Image 1" in the template options. I will have to delete this from the template and make a new mug with the right label for the image, using the original template image you see and saving it again to the hidden template folder. For the purposes of this Quick Create session, I will click customize at the top of the product, and change the image to the one that matches the other products in this batch.
So, at this step, you will customize any products that don't look the way you want them to. If you add text, make it a template. At this stage, you can lock objects you want to remain. I do this after I add my link formation and copyright notice to the backs of greeting cards and postcards. For greeting cards I normally change the font to "Dom" and resize it to 8 or 9. For postcards, I have a new trick now. I add the copyright statement with my link in one line. I resize the line to 3, after switching to the "Dom" font. Then I hit the rotate button three times until the line is vertical so that if you turned the card on its side it would be parallel and above the line down the middle of the card. Then I pull the text right onto the line so it covers it, and then I delete the line. My text then becomes the line and replaces it. It comes out like this. (please click the image to go look at the back side, since I can't get a link to just the back side.

When you have all the products looking as you want them to look, click "next" at the bottom.
You should now be on the Product Information and Pricing Page
If you made your cheat sheet as I recommended, this should be a snap.

I started the image at Store Category because the rest seemed pretty clear.
Fill in the title you want for this design and your product description in the places provided. I normally have these ready to paste in. Remember they have to apply to all products. Product specific descriptions or tags can be edited in later by editing your products.
Choose your main category, and this time select right down to the most specific subcategory.
Change your store category to the category you made for this product or the category in your store you want to put it in. Make sure the right store name is showing next to the drop down list.
Choose your audience.
Select your product visibility. I normally keep it public. I keep its folder home hidden until the products have arrived in the folder.
I click "yes" on "showing the customize button, because I think it will increase my sales.
Select your royalty and check the "right to publish" square.
Decipher and type in the Captcha -- the most time-consuming part of this page for me, since I can't see the characters very well, and some of the characters aren't even on my keyboard. I have to keep refreshing until I find something I think I can read. Your mileage may vary if your eyes and keyboard are better than mine.
Click "Post it" at the bottom and you are finished.
Wasn't that easy?
Is making your own Zazzle Quick Create Template worth it?
It takes an hour or two to make a Quick Create template, and you can't use a template you made for one store in another one. So, is it worth your time to make your own template when Zazzle has already provided one for you? I like having my own because I get just the products I want, and all of them I want, and can configure them so that I won't have to edit most of them and delete a lot of them before posting. But I never have been a "one size fits all" sort of person. I think over the long haul this will save me time.
Is it worth the time it takes to create your own quick create Zazzle templates?

Yes, it will save me time over the long haul, and I will get just what I want.

I have done both.

oh yes! I used the basic Quick Create originally & now there's all these new products, I'm lost as to which ones I've already done - this will help tremendously!
FlaminCatDesigns says:
Like you, I have started my shops the old fashioned way, one at a time. In some ways I think it is good, because I really learned how to make things fit. I just started using quick create. I am going to try making my own templates now.
stine1 says:
You saved my life!
Go-Shopping says:
It can be well worth the time you spend creating the templates. If you have more than one store in your account --> Now you can use templates you have created for any store. You are not restricted to use the templates you have created for the store you work at any given point.
Nah, what's the big deal? Zazzle has one I can use and I can edit and delete before posting. Why waste my time?

- I didn't even know about any of this. Right now it's still above my head. I've had such frustration with zazzle and my pictures not being large enough for the products I wanted to make. I started keeping them large but have yet to try to make anything like postage or stickers and such with the image that large. I really should get in gear and get more products designed.

- Marsha, it's not complicated as much as it is time consuming. My policy is to make the template photos as large as I can by shape. Zazzle will let me make them smaller when I customize in the template before publishing, but it won't make me resize them larger for a larger object such as a poster, napkin, plate, etc. I make my round template photos 10 inches in diameter to be able to make plates, and they will still work for stickers and keychains.

What a great reference for us Zazzlers, who want to take our store design to the next level. Also, thank you for allowing other Zazzlers to post links to their own stores -- very thoughtful of you!!!!!!!
