How to Make Balloon Duplets

The foundation for many balloon decorations

Balloon duplets are two balloons tied together at their opening that create the building blocks for most, large balloon structures such as columns and arches.

To make a balloon duplet, inflate first one balloon and leave it untied. Then inflate the second balloon to the same size as the first and tie the ends of the two balloons together.

Two pairs of balloon duplets are then twisted around fishing line, PVC pipe, or shaped frames to create the final balloon decorations.

Using Balloon Duplets for Balloon Columns and Arches

How to make balloon columns and arches

While the video below is not in English - the directions are easy to follow. See how the balloon decorator is taking two balloon duplets (pairs of balloons tied together) to make each layer of this flower balloon column?

The same layering concept is used with arches and regular columns. The length and height of your decorations is up to you. For floating arches using helium balloons, simply weight the ends of fishing line with bricks wrapped in scraps of cloth that match your theme or sturdy foil wrapping paper.

PVC pipe can be used to form frames for arches and columns and can be found at most home improvement centers.

How to Make Balloon Decorations with Twisting Balloons

Balloon animals, sculptures and centerpieces

Lots of people hire balloon clowns for children's birthday parties and these clowns shape long, twisting balloons into animals, hats, and swords. However, you can use the same concept to make great balloon centerpieces or sculptures for birthday parties, weddings and more.

As an example, I found instructions for making a pink balloon poodle that I thought was an excellent idea for a girl's birthday party.

Most of these types of balloon decorations are made from size 260 Balloons which are 2 inches around and 60 inches long.

How to Make Balloon Flower Decorations

Popular birthday party decoration

Twisting balloons are used for flower balloon decorations which are really popular for birthday parties, baby shower decorations, or even garden parties.

Once you master the balloon flower you'll find it can be used in a number of ways for all kinds of events. Entwine them in a balloon arch, tie them on the backs of chairs, build flower chains to drape over doorways or to frame the present table.

Twisting balloons can be used to make wreaths for holiday parties, animals for zoo theme parties, or balloon fish decorations for ocean theme parties.

How to Make a Twin Balloon Heart on a Frame

Step by Step Video Instructions

Ever seen wire frames in the shape of a heart decorated with balloons? They're great for weddings, anniversaries, and Sweet Sixteen birthday parties. This video walks you through how to make the frame yourself (a process you could use for shapes other than hearts, too) and how to cover the frame with duplets of pink and white balloons paired together and wrapped around the frame.

How to Make Curled Balloon Accent Decorations

Twist balloons that curve

Twisting balloons can be inflated around a pole (I use my kitchen broom handle) to create a curving, twisting decoration. You can use these to accent a balloon arch, balloon flowers, or mix them together for curlicues that you can use around the party or present table.

Don't wrap the balloon too tightly around the handle or it can pop during inflation.

Using Your Imagination for Balloon Decorations

Get creative

You can get ideas for balloon decorations from many sources. Making balloon decorations for kids parties is fairly easy. They usually have a favorite character that they've already picked for their birthday cake. This gives you the basis for your balloon decorations and color scheme. Can you think up some animals, shapes, or structures that go with that character?

For non-child birthday parties, you can use arches in their favorite colors or columns that are topped with Mylar balloons of their favorite sport or team. For a man who loves golf, top a column with a Mylar golf ball. For Valentine's day, top a white column with a giant, red heart. For a woman's birthday, create a garden of balloon flowers and drape matching balloon garland around the party area.

Weddings benefit from balloon decorations because of the reduced expense. For just a few pennies, you get nearly a square foot of color for a 12 inch balloon. It takes some time and planning to get these done in advance if you do them yourself - in fact, recruit a few friends to handle these for you and come up with a time line and supply list to keep the project on track. I think white arches, columns topped with bells, hearts or doves and balloon clouds filled with balloon hearts make great decoration ideas.

Let your imagination come up with great ideas to make the party extra special.

I hope I've provided some basic instructions on how to make balloon decorations to help you get started with planning a great party! However, you can do more with these decorations, as I found today. Find yourself with two six year old boys who are a little too wound up to play calmly? Blow up some balloons in pairs, twist as many as you can into two giant clusters, give them each a giant, balloon ball and let them go to town. This other finally got a little peace as a result. :)
