How to Make Small Balloon Flowers

Video Instructions

First, let's learn how to make balloon flowers using the twisting balloon technique. After that, we'll walk through using these for great centerpieces.

You'll need only two twisting balloons that are 5 feet long (a standard size so these should be easy to find at craft or party stores). Choose your colors. Obviously, green works well for a stem and pink for flower petals but let your imagination be your guide.

Making Balloon Flowers

Using Different Types of Balloons

With such an unlimited selection of balloon shapes, lengths and designs, the varieties of balloon flowers that be made is endless. In fact, you don't' need to use the twisting balloons at all for flowers. You can make them from standard 11 or 12 inch round balloons. The resulting flower is larger but just as pretty and can be used as a wall decoration, can be dangled from the ceiling or can act as a table centerpiece.

How to Make Large Balloon Flowers

Large Balloon Flowers for Birthday Parties and Wedding Receptions

For this large balloon flower decoration, you'll need five 11 or 12 inch balloons for the outer petals, five 5 inch balloons for the second layer of petals, one five inch balloon for the center of the flower and one green twisting balloon for the stem.

Use a balloon pump to inflate the balloons or - if you dare - inflate them by mouth, although I get much too light headed to do more than a couple of balloons that way!

The last half of the video includes a demonstration for making a column out of balloons on which the large balloon flower can sit for another great balloon decoration.

How to Make a Balloon Flower Bouquet

To make a bouquet of balloon flowers, make 3-5 of the small balloon flowers in coordinating colors. Twist them together half way down their stems and cover the twisted stems with a ribbon bow. You can also place these in a large vase or in a tall basket. They make great decorations for the corner of the party area, too.

The best balloon decorations cover several levels of your room - not just all balloons at the top or all balloons at the bottom. Instead, have layers of balloons - some floating up on the ceiling with curling ribbon dangling down, some shaped balloons or balloon centerpieces on tables and some balloon columns or shapes that are based on the floor but add splashes of color around the party location.

How to Make Pretty Balloon Centerpieces

Let's take what we know so far and learn how to make pretty balloon centerpieces for parties.

Select a container in which to set your centerpiece. This can be a small, silver pail or a flower pot. You can paint the flower pot or wrap it in tulle or wrapping foil if you want to give a lot of color to the base. In either case, your stand will need to be able to sit firmly on the table.

Insert a block of florist's foam inside the container.

Make a selection of small balloon flowers, shape several twisting balloons into coils, and inflate some regular, round balloons. Attach each flower and each regular balloon to a small, white dowel or clear stick (you can find these at craft stores).

Insert the sticks into the florist's foam, filling out the shape of your centerpiece. Wind the coiled balloons around the sticks to hide them.

Top your centerpiece with a small, Mylar balloon in a shape that fits the theme of your party - a football, for instance, for a football party or a teddy bear for a baby shower.

This is just one basic flower balloon centerpiece idea. You can expand the number of balloons or the size and patterns to come up with your own unique balloon centerpieces.

Saw the comment about types of balloons to use. You want the kind specifically made for twisting--they are stornger & more malleable. I looked up "twist ballons" on Google to find online suppliers. Would recommend a little hand-held pump as well. They're hard to blow up without one.
