How to Make Dog Agility Weave Poles

Ranked #3,262 in Pets & Animals, #82,412 overall

If your dog competes in rally or other dog agility competitions, agility weave poles are a must. Instead of spending a fortune on a set of weave poles that will break in a few months, make your own durable set for a fraction of the price.

Making Custom Dog Agility Weave Poles

You Will Need:
12 3/4" or 1" PVC pipes 36" tall
12 pieces of rebar
Mallet or sledgehammer
Colored tape

  • 1

Go to a building supply store and purchase rebar and 3/4" or 1" wide PVC pipe. PVC pipe usually comes in 10 ft long pieces, so ask the store to cut them into 3 ft long pieces. (Most stores will offer this service for free. Others may charge up to 25¢ per cut.)

  • 2

Determine the best place for the agility weave poles. The ideal location is a flat and grassy area with several feet of free space on all sides. Remember that these poles will be semi-permanently installed, so they should also be out of the way.

  • 3

Use a string or chalk line to mark off a straight line 19 ft 4 in long.

  • 4

Use spray paint to mark off every 21 in. along the string including the beginning and the end. There should be 12 marks. This will be where the weave poles are installed.

  • 5

Use a mallet or sledge hammer to drive a piece of rebar into each of the paint spots. They should be as straight as possible.

  • 6

Pound each bar a minimum of 9 in. into the ground. The deeper they go, the sturdier the weave poles will be.

  • 7

After installing each bar, slide a PVC pipe over each one. (Optional: Wrap a piece of brightly colored tape around each pole at the same height to make them easier to see for you and the dog.)

Voilà! Agility weave poles! Have fun practicing with your canine friend. If one of the agility poles becomes damaged, simply remove the damaged PVC pipe add another one over the existing rebar.

Wire Guides for Weave Poles

Beginning dogs may find it easier to learn to use their weave poles with the addition of weave pole wire guides. These wire guides clip directly onto the weave poles and can be lowered or raised as your puppy grows or when using with different dogs and then be removed when your dog becomes proficient. (Wires should be placed at eye level.)

Competition or Just For Fun

My dogs have trained in Rally, formal obedience and canine freestyle. Each has their favorites. My mini enjoys canine freestyle (and standing on top of the A-frame). My JRT/Pointer mix though has the need for speed and delights in zooming through rally courses.

I always wondered how people trained dogs to do this. It amazes me to see them perform on TV. Very useful information here and attractively presented.
