Christmas Centerpieces | How to Make a Gumdrop Trees

Coming up with new, creative, yet inexpensive Christmas centerpieces or a Christmas Table Decoration for the holidays is sometimes a challenge. Here, we will learn how to use candy and foam cones to create a fun, festive and edible Gumdrop Tree Centerpiece. This is a great Christmas craft for kids. (Just don't let them eat all the gumdrops!) There are also suggestions for other types of a candy tree with photos.

Step by step instructions and pictures of how to make a Christmas Tree of candy are included as well as some ideas to incorporate candy into your holiday decor!

Supplies for a Gumdrop Tree

You will need:

foam cone (any size you want, the one pictured is a 10" cone)
toothpicks
Pillar Candle Holder
Gumdrops - For the 10" cone I used 2 1/4 pounds of gumdrops or 2 1/4 bags of gumdrops)

"The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads."

How-To Part I

Very simple steps to have a Gumdrop Christmas tree!

  • Unwrap your cone.

  • Break some toothpicks in half. Repeat when you run out.

  • Beginning at the bottom of the cone, stick a toothpick (pointy end) into the cone about halfway.

  • Stick a gumdrop of the protruding part of the toothpick.
  • Work your way around the bottom of the cone until you meet where you began that row.
  • Start another row, placing the toothpick above the "V" area of the gumdrop row below. (Since the gumdrops are not exactly the same size, this won't always work but it does cut down on the amount of white space showing through.)
  • Continue up the tree to the top.
  • On the top, use a large gumdrop, ribbon or a cluster of gumdrops to form a topper.

How to Display

Once your tree is finished, simply place it on a pillar candle holder (one with a round base equal to the diameter of the cone). For further stability use a pillar holder with a built in pin in the middle of the round base or dab some hot glue on the base prior to placing the cone on top.

Centerpieces Ideas

A few foam cones, some candy, a glue gun, toothpicks and pins can make for a fun and sweet Christmas Centerpiece!

You can use virtually any type of candy. The trees pictured use gumdrops, wintergreen lifesavers and peppermints. I had a set of 3 pillar candle holders and placed the finished trees on them. Use them for a dining room table centerpiece, sideboard centerpiece or for your holiday buffet. Place them on a mantel or bookcase to add to the holiday spirit. Have fun!
