If you are going to make handmade soap, you need to be sure that you have quality ingredients. The ingredients you use will make or break your soap. Considering the amount of time and effort you will put into the process, it would be a shame to end up with lackluster soap.
There are a multitude of locations, on and offline, that offer great oils that you can use.
How to Make Soap: Proper Temperatures
Saponification is the reaction that turns sodium hydroxide (or lye) and fat/oil into soap. In order for this reaction to take place, the sodium hydroxide and fat/oils must be introduced to each other at the right temperatures. If the difference between the two is too great, or the temperatures are not in the right range, you run the risk of creating a failed batch of soap.
How to Make Soap: The Importance of "Trace"
It is critical that you do not start to pour your soap mixture until after "trace" has started. If you do, the reactions necessary for soap creation will not have an opportunity to begin. What results is something that is more along the lines of mush and oil instead of useable soap.

The number one myth you will run into is that soap can only be made from animal fat. This is not the case at all!
It is true that the soap that people used to make at home was usually from rendered animal fat, or tallow. Today, however, most hobbyists use oils extracted from plants to make their soaps. These oils include almond oil, palm oil, avacado oil, and many others.
I have met several people who were initially afraid to learn how to make soap because they didn't want to deal with animal fat. Their minds quickly changed once I let them know that there was another way to enjoy this hobby.

Fundamental Cold Process Soap Making Instructions
How to Make Soap with the Cold Process
Cold Process BasicsThe cold process is excellent! With it, you create your soap completely from scratch. These are the basic directions for using the cold process.
1. In a glass bowl, add lye to distilled water mixing slowly.
2. Melt your oils in a stainless steel pot.
3. When the temperatures of the oils and the lye water are close to the same temperature, pour the lye water into the into the oils. This will create the soap mix.
4. Stir the soap mix thoroughly until it reaches "trace".
5. Once the soap mix reaches trace, add the essential oils or fragrances called for by the recipe.
6. Stir the soap mix and pour it into the soap molds.
7. Cover the molds with towels and let them set for twenty-four to forty-eight hours.
8. After the soap has solidified, remove the soap from the mold.
9. Allow the soap to cure for four to six weeks.
