Should you Use a Box to Make Brownies?
Using a brownie mix in a box might seem like cheating. It's not really homemade if you use a box, right? Well, that depends on what you consider homemade. If the entire brownie making process needs to be done at home, then I guess they're not homemade, but think about it, why do you want them to be homemade?
Homemade brownies are better than store bought because they are fresh and you can do just about anything to them. You can do with with a box, too. You can buy a box mix that has chocolates or candies in them, or you can add them yourself. You can bake up a box of brownies and eat them when they're warm and delicious. It's all up to you!
Go to the supermarket and pick up a box of brownie mix if you are making brownies for the first time or if you need fresh delicious brownies fast. If you're worried about what people might say, just don't tell them you used a box!
Some people even like to use a box brownie mix and change the recipe around to their liking such as using butter instead of oil, or using more or less eggs to get the right balance of fudge and cake-like consistency. You can throw just about anything in the batter to make that extra special. Nuts are a common addition but you could also add chocolate chips or any flavor baking chips, a chopped up candy bar or two of your choice, or swirl in some peanut butter. Do whatever you want!
Although, I would at least stick to sweet stuff. I wouldn't recommend adding some garlic or onion, that could be disastrous!

How to Make Homemade Brownies from Scratch
If box mix is just not your style, you can make your brownies from scratch. Many brownie recipes will call for baker's chocolate. This is bittersweet chocolate that has no sugar and can be found in the baking aisle. Remember, I said NO SUGAR, so don't eat it. It does not have a pleasant taste.
You will have to melt this in a double boiler and add it to the rest of the ingredients. If you don't have one, you can use a small pot of water, boil it, and put a metal bowl over it so that the water isn't touching the bowl. Put the chocolate in the bowl and slowly stir it over medium heat until it melts. You could use a microwave, but it might not come out as well.
Other recipes will call for cocoa powder. I've made a lot of brownie recipes, and the ones that call for cocoa powder aren't always as good as the others, although I have found one or two that came out about the same. Cocoa powder is much easier to work with because you don't have to melt the chocolate.
Some recipes will call for semisweet chocolate, such as regular semisweet chocolate chips, that you will melt. One of my favorite recipes from Betty Crocker calls for chocolate chips to melted in a pan with butter and then all the rest of the ingredients are added.
If you have all the right ingredients and an easy recipe, some recipes can be almost as easy as brownie mix, but you'll probably end up dirtying more bowls. If you don't mind washing dishes, go ahead! Sometimes that extra effort makes it that much better!
