A Rock Star Costume Is Great For Halloween... Or Any Other Time!
The best part, it's easy to pull off! You probably already own most of the things you need, and you can get the rest from your local thrift store, online, or make it yourself! Your options really are unlimited. Just think about what rock stars are wearing these days - basically, anything goes. You can keep it simple, or go all out; it's your choice.

Buy Or Use What You Have
Basically, the most important part of choosing a rock star costume top is to make it bold and eye-catching. There are three ways to go about finding a great top.- Raid Your Closet (or Your Friend's): There's probably that one top that you or a friend owns that you bought because you loved it but it's just too outrageous to wear. Now's your chance!
- Check the Thrift Stores: You'd be amazed at some of the quality items you can find at a thrift store, many of which are more ridiculous than you could find at a regular store. Use your imagination, and keep an eye out for the following: mesh, buckles, bright colors, metallics, zippers, etc.
- Shop Online or at a Local Store: If all else fails, you can use your need for a rock star costume top to go shopping!

The Rock Star Pants
Denim or Leather?
The age old question when dressing like a rock star is, do I go with leather pants or jeans? As you can see, I chose to wear skinny jeans for my costume, mostly because I didn't have much time and I already owned the pants. Again, it's a good idea to use what you have to make a rock star costume, unless you're really looking for an excuse to shop. If you need pants, thrift stores are a great place to look.
Again, modifications are always fun when it comes to creating your rock star look. If you have a pair of pants you're willing to sacrifice (or can buy one for relatively cheap), have fun cutting them, adding patches, and splattering with paint. Sure, you can easily buy pants like that nowadays, but what's the fun in that?

The Rock Star Shoes
Boots Make the Woman
One of the best parts of making your own homemade rock star costume is picking the shoes. There are a lot of different directions you can go in, depending on the look you're going for.If you want to err on the sexy side, choose your favorite pair of high-heeled boots; just take into account whether or not you'll be able to walk in them all night! Combat boots are also a good choice for that tough rocker look.
If you decide to get boots online, make sure that the site has a good return policy. Boots vary widely in how they fit, and you don't want to be walking around all day in ill-fitting boots! You can, however, get all sorts of great inspiration from seeing what the internet has to offer. Click here

Alternately, visit just about any big-box store that has a jewelry section, discount stores, and even thrift stores to find inexpensive costume accessories. Making a Rock Star Costume Prop
An Easy Microphone
The best way to show that you're a rock star is to use props. It's great if you have a guitar or drum sticks to tote around, but in a pinch, the easiest prop to make is a microphone. And the best part is, you don't have to worry if you get tired of carrying it around and want to set it down somewhere, as it costs next to nothing. You'll need: scissors, cardboard, electrical tape, aluminum foil
Construction time: 5 minutes
- Cut out a rectangle of cardboard about the width of the microphone length. Start rolling from one corner until you have a rough cone shape. Secure with electrical tape.
- Ball up a piece of aluminum foil and place it in the wide end of the cone.
- Starting at the thin end of the cone, wrap the electrical tape around the cardboard, making sure to leave no gaps. Continue wrapping over the aluminum foil until the ball is secure.

Makeup and Hair For Your Homemade Rock Star Costume
Bigger and Bolder Is Better!
Getting your hair and makeup ready are some of the funnest parts of putting together your homemade rock star costume. For the makeup, focus on your eyes. Use bright, bold eye shadow, line both your upper and lower lids in black, and use mascara on both your upper and lower lashes.
For the hair, turn your head upside down and blow-dry. Spray with hairspray while your head is still upside down. If desired, use curlers or a curling iron to create big hair.
*Important Hair Dye Disclaimer* I used temporary spray-on pink hair dye for my costume, and I really liked how it looked. However, it contains chemicals that can be very irritating to breathe in, and is HIGHLY flammable. Also, you pretty much have to wash it off before you go to bed, which you might not be up for after staying out all night. I recommend using semi-permanent dye or hair accessories to achieve the dyed-hair look!
