Foam Crafts for Kids | Craft Ideas for Parents | How to make Moshi Monsters and Moshlings

Welcome to my lens on how to make foam crafts and foam craft ideas for the popular online game Moshi Monsters and their cute little pet Moshlings. While I consider this to be a kids crafts project parental help will be needed for using the wood-burning iron and to supervise the Plasti-dip stage. Craft foam we commonly use are 10mm and 3mm thick, glued together with hotglue. Crazy glue or rubber cement will also work and is more kid friendly. For our featured Moshling we made Oddie #088 the little donut dude moshling as an attachment for the end of a pencil.

Intro picture includes moshling Ecto, our featured moshling Oddie, moshling Iggy (I'm Gonna Get You!), moshling Squidge, moshling Cherry Bomb, moshling Doris, moshling White Fang, moshling Liberty and moshling Lady Goo Goo

Overview
This project can be broken down into 3 stages.
Stage 1: Make templates and cut out shapes
Stage 2: Burn details and glue shapes together
Stage 3: Plastidip and paint

Hosts: davidangel, LuckyLeigh and darciefrench

I have to admit the Moshi Monsters game is quite entertaining, I can see why kids love it. I own a lovely Luvli named Grapple and she lives in a man-cave I made just for her where she hoards her ROX, check it out here: Dave's Moshi Monster Man Cave

Foam Hobby Crafting Stage 1

Make templates and cut out shapes

moshling

How to make Moshling Oddie. First you will need to cut your shapes, a circle for his body from the thicker 12mm foam, smaller circles for eyes with the 3mm foam and also a pair of legs from the 3mm foam. I used a 35mm washer for the body and the inside worked for the eyes. Draw your shapes on the foam with a pencil and then cut them out using the hotknife or scissors. For the body part you may need to sand the outside smooth, I use 360 grit sandpaper. For the legs you can draw the outline and cut it out of paper first. When you are satisfied with the shape trace the outline on the 3mm foam and cut them out. Also cut a small crescent shape from one eye for his overall "look".
The pictures below document this process.

I use my project leftovers from 10 and 12mm foam floor mats and 3mm giant foam roll for smaller projects like these. Hobby foam works great too and comes in various sizes.

Detail the shapes and glue them together

How to assemble Moshling Oddie This video shows how I assemble Oddie after having cut out the basic shapes. I burn a hole in the center, burn holes for legs and one for the pencil, as well as burn detail for the eyeballs and frosting. Lastly I hotglue everything together, although you can use rubber cement as a kid friendly option.

The multi purpose versa tool kit is by far the tool I use the most and I have tested a few. This is the exact item I use for foam crafting and not only is it durable, it gets very hot and comes with all the goodies you will need. With the hotknife attachment you can cut out shapes and make precision cuts. With the branding irons you can burn in details, rivet holes and smooth rough edges. This kit even has a soldering tip and a small spool of solder for any custom LED work you do. Buy this tool for foam crafting satisfaction, I did.

Foam Hobby Crafting Stage 3

Plasti-dip and paint

type=text

This stage is fairly straight forward starting with Plasti-dip. Attach a pencil to Oddie and dip him in the Plasti-dip then hang him to dry. After he is dry remove the pencil and remove any excess dip around the hole. And finally, the stage your kids have been waiting for, paint your Oddie! You can use the reference picture above to paint the traditional game accurate colors, or make up whatever colors you like, here is your chance to let the creativity and artistic flair out of the bag!

Advanced Moshi Moshling Creation

Made Oddie? Ready to try the harder ones?

moshling-doris

Oddie is fairly easy to make, he is all circles, but how about something more advanced like moshling Doris? First you will need to find a picture of Doris and print it off in the size you want her, or draw a picture of her. I tend to make the fridge magnets around 2" in size. Cut her body shape from 10mm foam and her head, bow, horn and tail parts from 3mm foam. Cut the foam where her mouth is and overlap it slightly to give it definition. Next glue all the parts together then she is ready for painting. Lastly glue her google eyes and magnet in place.

This is the top view for moshling Doris. Notice the tail and tail spikes are centered down her back and I've also painted the edges black, this gives added definition when viewed at an angle. I also painted the edges around her head a darker navy blue for added definition and to help contrast her head from her body when looking at her front on.

Moshling Lady Goo Goo

Lady Goo Goo is the little celebrity moshling that loves to sing and dance and soil her pants. She is fun to make with foam, start her the same way as Doris with a picture or drawing and trace her round head and body on 10mm foam and then cut out her shape. Next cut 4mm off her body and legs, leaving her head and feet the full 10mm thickness. With 3mm foam make her diaper, bonnet, arms, glasses, nookie and microphone. I used a small plastic bead for the end of the microphone. Glue her all together and paint her up, I painted black on the edges of her diaper, bonnet, arms, glasses and nookie for added definition. If you have gold glitterglue apply some to her glasses to complete the look. For her bangs I cut the shape 2mm deep and then horizontally, this enabled me to lift the tips of the hair and glue them over the glasses. I also gave this one a clear gloss coat to make her shine like the little star she is. Too cute!

Moshling Liberty

Liberty is one of my favorite moshlings and is my most advanced creation to date, not only being a google eyed fridge magnet, but she also blinks red and blue colored lights in her crown, eyes and mouth! (See video below) I used a blinking button that runs on 2 watch batteries, imbedded into the 10mm foam head and body shape and then overlayed with 2mm foam face. I left holes for the eyes and crown and used the hot iron fine tip to burn her happy mouth hole. Her crown, bangs and hearts are all 2mm foam while her icecream cone and wish list are 3mm foam. Lastly her ponytail is 5mm foam. She turns on by turning the magnet on the back, which can also be unscrewed to change her batteries.

Liberty moshling with blinkers

powered by Youtube

This is the back of the item I used to add blinkers to Liberty, it is a blinking button originally used to advertise Harley Davidson with their logo on the front. It takes 2 watch batteries and is activated by screwing the battery cap on tight. I found 2 of these at a local thrift store in the 25 cent bin, a thrift store is a great place to find crafting goodies like blinkers, paints and foam floor mats for cheap.

Moshling White Fang

type=text

Moshling White Fang is another of my favorites as I am a big fan of dogs in general and white is my favorite color. I made him using the same method for Doris, his body is round with the legs as one part cut from 10mm foam. His head and tail is 3mm foam with his face, left ear and hair layered 3mm foam and his right ear is also 3mm foam, only attached to the body just behind his head. His nose is another 3mm foam layer and his google eyes are on 2mm blue foam circles. I also used the fine tip hot iron to burn away some foam and seperate his legs for added definition. For painting I used grey to outline the edges of his face and tail, the front of his nose and also a little dry-brushing on the edges of his ears and hair to give the black some definition. His face and nose also have black edges so they stand out better.

DJ Quack

type=text

DJ Quack is a cool little moshling and is fairly easy to make. Once again you will need to print his picture or draw him and then trace his body on 10mm foam. Include his wings and top tuft of hair if you can, afterwards I cut the back 5mm of foam off the wings and tuft for added definition when viewing him at an angle. I used 3mm foam for his glasses and the fine tip hot iron to lightly burn in the lens detail. I also used the fine tip hot iron to burn in his front hair and give his wings added definition. For his nose I used 5mm foam and for his feet 2mm foam. I also painted light brown around his body, feet edges and the sides of his nose, as well as in the grooves of his front hair definition. Too cool!

With so many moshlings to attract in the game you can have fun making and painting your favorites, I know I sure do. Next up I am making DJ Quack the little duck dude that spins out fresh tracks at the underground disco.
*Update* DJ Quack is finished and added to the magnetic board, I wonder who I will make next?
