How To Make Spam Musubi - Supplies Needed

The first thing you will need are the appropriate supplies to make spam musubi.

A spam musubi press helps to press and form the rice.

A knife is needed to slice the spam, however a luncheon meat slicer is recommended for convenience and so the slices are uniform in size. Of course, you will need to do this on a cutting board.

The slices will need to be grilled on a skillet for a nice crunchy texture.

And, there you have it!

So, basically, all you need are: a skillet, spam musubi press, cutting board and knife.

How To Make Spam Musubi - Needed Ingredients

When making spam musubi you will need:

- cooked sticky rice

- nori sheets

- spam

- teriyaki sauce (homemade teriyaki sauce has the best flavor).

Prepare the spam by slicing into 1/4" size slices and grilling on a skillet so that the texture is crunchy.

Now we are ready to make this Spam Musubi Recipe really happen!

- first, take one nori sheet and lay it on a clean cutting board

- center the spam musubi press on the nori sheet

- fill the spam musubi press with approximately 1 cup of cooked sticky rice

- press the rice firmly

- dip 2 pieces of the grilled spam into the homemade teriyaki sauce and place next to each other on the pressed rice

- again, fill the spam musubi press with approximately 1 cup of cooked sticky rice (on top of the spam)

- press the rice firmly

- now remove the spam musubi press by holding the 'presser' firmly and sliding the 'mold' up

- once the spam musubi press has been removed, wrap one side of the nori sheet around the rice

- now repeat by wrapping the other side of the nori sheet around as well

- you should now have a long spam musubi that can be cut in half

Awe yea! Spam musubi. What I'm talking about! We made some during our Osaka Festival 2011 fundraiser for Japan Awareness and missions. You should check out my lens on it ;) Also, A little tip: You dont necessary need that fancy plastic piece, thrifty cooks with some know how can cut the bottom of a spam can about 1.5-2 inches and use that cut piece of container as a compartment for rice pressing, kind of like a mold. Gotta be careful of the sharp edges!

I love musubis! If you want to make it a little easier, you don't have to use teriyaki sauce or nori. They still taste amazing without those ingredients.

When I was young and money was short we would eat fried spam. In the 50s it was a cheap meat. I did not realize it could be "fancied" up so much
