What Makes Spanish Rice so Wonderfully Unique?

Spanish rice is one of the most popular of the simple side dishes in Mexico, and it is served with nearly every main dish. It is not uncommon to find your stuffed chili, a freshly grilled steak, your cordon bleu, or your Mexican chicken mole served on a bed of freshly made Spanish rice. It is used as a complement with most of the dishes, and even some of the simple tacos that you can eat in Mexico will include rice in the ingredients inside the tortilla.

The thing that makes Spanish rice so wonderfully unique is the delightful flavors that it has. Rather than just being served a bowl of plain white rice, you will find that Spanish rice makes for a pleasant meal. Spanish rice is incredibly easy to prepare, which is why most Mexican restaurants use it as a side or filler dish. Rice is abundant in Mexico, and the delightful Spanish rice is incredibly popular with Mexicans.

Making Spanish rice will take a bit of practice, but you will find that it will be well worth the effort to prepare this delicious rice. Even if you are not making Mexican food, you will find that Spanish rice will be a tasty complement for any chicken or steak meal, grilled or fried fish, or even fried eggs. The versatility of Spanish rice is matched only by its unique flavors.

The best thing this recipe is how simple it is to whip up quickly. All you have to do is fry up the garlic, onions, and rice for a few minutes, add in the tomato sauce and chicken stock, and your rice will cook all on its own. It can be hard to know when your rice is thoroughly cooked, which is why you will need to keep a close eye on it to ensure that it does not burn.

How to Make Spanish Rice Like a Pro

Preparing Spanish rice like a pro will take a bit of time and practice to get it right. Spanish rice combines the flavors of chicken broth and tomato sauce to infuse the rice with all of the delicious taste for which it is known. The problem is that tomato sauce burns much quicker than water or chicken stock, and it takes longer to cook the rice as well. In order to ensure that your Spanish rice does not burn, it is important to follow a specific procedure.

To begin, you will need to fry the uncooked rice with some olive or vegetable oil. Frying the rice with some garlic and onions helps to add extra flavor, and heats the rice to ensure that it will cook faster. By frying the rice before you cook it, you make it much more difficult for the rice to burn and you ensure that your rice is prepared as flavorful as possible.

Once the rice has fried for 5 to 10 minutes, you will need to add the chicken stock and tomato sauce. The ratio is roughly 5 parts chicken stock to 2 parts tomato sauce to three parts rice. If you follow this ratio, you will get rice that is delightfully flavorful, but that is thoroughly cooked. Add the liquids into the rice, as well as a few canned vegetables for extra color and flavor. Let the liquids heat until they boil, then turn the fire onto a low setting and cover the pot with a lid. Within 15 or 20 minutes, your rice will be done.

Spanish rice was a staple in my house growing up. It was essentially your recipe, but we added ground beef and frozen peas to make a full meal. Thanks for the reminder of a childhood favourite. Guess what I'm making this week? :)
