How To Make Your Own Windmill

Windmills have been used for hundreds of years and it's only in recent years that modern versions have been created to power homes. If the idea of creating your own electricity appeals to you, but you feel it could be very expensive to install your own windpower system then consider building your own windmill.

It's not as difficult as you may imagine and with the help of one of the many information products available you could soon have your own professional looking windmill for under $200. Just imagine the money you could save on electricity bills.

How Much Electricity Can a Home Windmill Generate?

The amount of electricity that your windmill can generate depends on the average windspeed in the area that you live. In order to turn the blades of a windmill you need at least a windspeed of 12 miles an hour.

It also depends on the size of your windmill and the speed at which the rotor turns. In order to power an average size home for a year you need a 10 kilowatt wind turbine which can on average produce about 10,000 kwh a year.

Of course this is only an average and depends on the amount of wind you get and as you can't rely on the weather as being consistent this will vary.

Excess electricity is stored in battery cells, so on less windy days you will have a back up so you shouldn't get breaks in power. It's still advisable though not to disconnect yourself from the power company completely.

How Does a Windmill Work?

A windmill is constructed of a main pole or tower and the height of which depends on the area you live. If you live on top of a windy hill the tower doesn't have to be as high as if you live in a low lying less windy area.

The generator is the part that creates the electricity, and the rotor and blades are connected to this. A windmill usually has three blades which are usually made of plastic or wood.

Wind turns the blades of the windmill which are attached to the rotor. This turns a drive shaft that's connected to a generator inside the base of the windmill.

The main drawback of generating electricity with a windmill is that it depends on a constant source of wind. If you intend to become independant of your power company you will need another source of power such as solar panels.

Find out how you can build a wind power and solar power system for under $200 and you don't have to be a diy expert to create a professional looking windmill.
