How to Overcome Fear in Public Speaking
Ranked #53,988 in Culture & Society, #1,195,758 overall
We all need some confidence building from time to time. Part of feeling confident has a lot to do with how we feel about ourselves. Feeling like we can accomplish things we set out to do is important to feeling confident.
Remember that we all have talents and gifts. Whether we feel confident in these skills is very much part of thinking like a winner. Here is an easy way you can train yourself to think like a winner.
Make yourself a 'to do' list. Before you start complaining that you've tried that already in the past and it didn't work, let's go over the rules for this list. This is a list to make you feel like a winner.
It is your job to help yourself to feel as much like a winner as possible by making a list that is fun and easy to get done. I mean super easy. Ridiculously easy, even.
Here's a sample list:
1. Get out of bed.
2. Brush my teeth and comb my hair.
3. Get dressed.
4. Eat something.
5. Eat something else.
6. Walk to a car, bus or another room.
7. Smile.
8. Answer the phone. But only if it rings.
9. Put socks on...
Are you getting the idea? This isn't your average 'to do' list. This is a sort of self-conditioning list. Seeing all those check marks or seeing everything crossed off your list will make you feel like you've had a productive day. You'll gain confidence in your abilities to get things done.
If you practice this fun list making, you'll come to think of yourself as a winner. If you forget to write the list one morning, write a 'done' list at the end of the day. Just list 'got out of bed', etc. and mark them off.
As silly as this confidence building list making may seem, bear in mind that the subconscious doesn't care about what is real or imagined. All it will see is a list that has been checked off every day. Eventually, you'll notice yourself feeling more confident. You can then start adding real tasks to your list and doing them with the same 'feel good' attitude you had when you made your practice lists.
Don't add too many, to start. Camouflage the real items you want to accomplish with your stand-by easy ones. The reason you don't want to do a complete shift in list writing is that feeling good is an important element of confidence building.
Just look at someone you know to be confident. Are they down in the mouth or smiling? Allow yourself the joy of having fun with life. You'll feel like a winner!

Preparing for a wedding speech
Traditionally, it's not important if you are the bride, the groom, maid of honor or mom and dad of the bride or the groom, there are a number fundamental wedding speech etiquette principles that should be followed. The most essential matter to remember if you are expected to talk is to not mention anything humiliating or drink too much alcohol before you talk. Those are two damaging affairs that people will recall and you'll not only humiliate yourself, but everyone at the reception will be speaking about you during, and after the wedding reception is over. Assume your part as a speaker seriously and think of it as an honor.Seek to keep your words light and make sure it doesn't last more than a few minutes, and you must not forget you are not the only individual who would like to toast or make a speech and taking too much time is not thoughtful to those individuals. Reckoning upon your position and how you are connected to the bride and bridegroom, it's OK to have a humorous speech. Nevertheless if you are the mom of the bride, don't forget you are looked upon as the hostess of the wedding so seek to keep your words from the heart, even if there are some tears.
Inappropriate accounts or base speeches are in bad taste, and so is not knowing your audience. If the age of guests at the wedding reception tends to be on the older side and you are standing up for your best man address, try to recall that, so don't talk about anything they wouldn't comprehend or treasure. If either the bride or groom have been wed before, never speak about the last marriage, wedding, or the split up they went through because for no other reason, it's wrong.
Secure matters to speak about are the bride and bridegroom, what a fantastic couple they make, what you think their future holds, and of course, how they got together. Even if you are invited to talk and you don't know the bride too well or the groom as well, ask other people who are familiar with that individual for some advice instead of tripping over your words thinking of something gracious to say. Preparation is gold when thinking about the wedding speech you will be providing and how you are related to or what wedding position you hold are important matters when planning your address. If you are the best man, you ought to speak about him and include comments about his new groom. The identical etiquette would go if you are the bridesmaid, only attempt to talk more about the bride, yet still include the groom.
If you are the bride or the groom, it's important not to forget to thank the people who made your day special. These people can include parents, grandparents, stepparents, sisters, brothers, attendants, or other people who helped you organize your wedding day. If you stay with the common formula of keeping cheerful, positive, warm, and humorous, but not embarrassingly amusing, you'll be able to deliver a speech that people will remember and won't damage the wedding speech etiquette rules.
Eliminating Your Fears
A fear or phobia can destroy a person's chances for development and success. Fear in itself can be disabling and can hurt a person's ability to make it through life so at times a person's fear can influence their life and lack any kind of reason. An individual that lets fear control them can easily be stopped from continuing with a normal life. The sad fact is that the person who fears is not the only one who experiences the affects but other,s including family, friends, and others associated with them.Fear can be healthy because it lets a person to be on their toes and to be watchful is occurring around them. It's possible for a person to compel their fear to work for them instead of being a hindrance however this calls for a lot of self control as well as positive thinking. Fear can be caused by some event that happened in the past, or by a belief that they are incapable of managing with something or someone. There are fears are well founded but most are simply the creations of one's imagination.
Phobic disorder is the term used for a fear of something, but such fear can be considered irrational so these phobias can be just plain ridiculous such as a person's fear of cats or of water. Some people who have developed phobia that are well aware that it has nothing to do with rational thinking but, they're incapable of controlling their emotions and move past these feelings.
Some people are quick to equate phobia with insanity but it is not fair to believe that just because there IS a phobia it means there is something wrong with their sanity. A phobia can be very embarrassing and even more so if they cannot control it and there are people who will not be able to control themselves when they come face to face with them.
Phobias can be very elementary like the fear of being in a tight space or they can be complex, like riding in an airplane but a social phobia can be manifested of not being able to speak in public or of being surrounded by people. Many of these phobias ace accompanied by panic attacks such as when the person is confronted by their phobia and where they're forced to come face-to-face with it. It's perfectly normal to fear because rationality involves fear but irrational fear and is already irrational is called a phobia. It's not normal anymore and can interrupt a person's lifestyle.
A person seeking to get rid of their phobia should not turn to doctors who will delve into the mind to find the actual cause and such an activity can be a waste of time since finding the cause of the phobia will not cause it to go away. What is more important is to have determination so fear will no longer control emotions. If a person can learn how to influence their own emotions then they can be rid of their phobia.
