How to play drums, a Primer

First let me congratulate you on your decision to How To
Play The Drums
! In my humble opinion, the drums are the most rewarding and just plain Rockin' instrument to learn to play!

There is something we must talk about, that comes up no matter what instrument you're interested in.

Learning an instrument is doable by anyone. You don't have to have massive talent to learn to play the drums well. (sure it might help) The real truth in deciding how good you're going to get at your instrument is how much Time and Effort you're willing to put in!

-There is no shortcut! No one can teach you to play like Buddy Rich, Neil Pert, or John Bonham in a matter of weeks or months, despite what some other websites might claim. You WILL be disappointed if you think otherwise.

-You WILL have to practice the boring stuff too! A HUGE part of playing the drums well is training. Playing the drums is a physical activity. You have to learn muscle memory, train those muscles to be faster and stronger, and learn the unique dexterity needed to play. Remember this is not HARD, it just takes time and dedicated practice!

-Lastly, for today, you have to practice the RIGHT things! Sure it's fun to jam with your favorite song, and that should definitely be part of your practice routine. However, as I said, you'll have to practice time-proven things to quickly build the proper skills.

Just remember, learning How To Play Drums takes a commitment, of time and practice. I cannot begin to tell you how glad I am that I stuck with drumming, even though there were almost countless times I wanted to quit, or didn't feel like practicing over the years.
Commit yourself, and you will have a lot of fun with your drumming career.
