How to begin to play electric guitar
Playing electric guitar is easy but the snag is you really should learn guitar using a nylon string acoustic guitar. Steel strings are tough on the fingers when you are just learning how to play. So whether you get it from ebay or the local music store, you need an acoustic guitar that's halfway decent. It doesn't need to be expensive, just playable.
When it comes to buying an electric guitar, you can easily start off with one of the less expensive models. You can get the buzz from playing a real honest to goodness electric guitar on whatever no-frills Stratocaster copy your music store has, and it will get through your initial guitar playing learning curve. But if you go to ebay or an online guitar store to buy a guitar, get some time in trying out instruments belonging to friends or in the local guitar store. You MUST have some idea of what you are buying online.

Amps, effects and other electric guitar stuff
A tuner and a metronome are essentials. These are two bits of equipment which are part of the discipline of electric guitar playing. Get into the habit of tuning your guitar from time to time during practice sessions - you might be surprised how far out you can get without being aware of it! While you are first learning how to play electric guitar you probably won't be able to do too much jamming with friends until you develop a familiarity with your instrument. So once you feel you have gotten the hang of a song or a riff, try it out with the metronome. As slowly as you need to; you are not doing anybody any favors by rushing.
Metronome Software
It uses a real sample of a metronome ticking. It's totally configurable and has more features than many of the metronomes that are only available by paying.
If you use a metronome when practising your scales and licks, it will help you play along with other musicians and practice keeping good time. If you are playing a bit of rock, blues or jazz, then we highly recommend the downloadable drum loop software which can get you jamming along with a drummer who never gets tired, keeps great time and can change styles at the click of a mouse.

When the noise the guitar is making is too much for the amp's circuitry, it's called "distortion". When the sound from the amp is making the guitar string vibrate, it's called "feedback".

First, the simplest solution - buy a guitar lesson book. It might be all you need. Some people can't do without the input of a face to face teacher or the experience of seeing the lessons on video, but there are those people who do quite well with printed instructions and music.
But if you need a more intense experience, but a live guitar teacher is not available, then try online electric guitar lessons. With online lessons, you just sit in your room and absorb the teacher's instructions, and then do your practice.
