How to Play Freecell

Freecell: Addicting You Since Windows 95

You know the situation: you're bored and you have some time to kill. You go to the generic games on your computer, and you ponder which one will consume your precious time. You look at Freecell and consider playing it. You open it, only to realize that you have absolutely no clue how to play it, and you of course cannot be bothered reading those ultra-boring rules that Microsoft provides. So you choose Minesweeper or the ever-beloved Solitaire instead. Hey, that's okay! If you didn't know how to play game before, hopefully I can show you, and you'll come to know just how addicting it is.

The number one thing to remember is to NOT get frustrated!

Like any fun hobby, it takes time to learn how to play this fun and addicting game! Take your time and allow yourself to make mistakes as you learn the "ins and outs" of the game.

Game Play

For the sake of showing you how the game is played, I will walk you through the beginning of one specific game. So open Freecell, and click "Game" and "Select Game". Type in number 21260. Now what you should see is eight rows of random-looking cards below two sets of four rectangles.

The set of rectangles on the right side of the screen is where you want to end up putting all your cards. These rectangles are called "homecells." Each cell will be assigned it's own suit. For example, you'll notice an ace of hearts on the bottom of the first row of cards. You'll also notice a two of hearts in the bottom of the seventh row. Go ahead and double click the ace. See how both it and two flew up to the first place homecell? Now the three of hearts will go on top of the two of hearts, so go ahead and click the three and then click the two. What you just did was move the three from the bottom rows of cards up to it's permanent place. Now the four of hearts will go there, and et cetera until the King of hearts is right on top. This is what the objective of the game is - getting all of the cards into their proper place.

The four cells on the left side are place holders. They are called freecells. When you need to get something out of the way, move it up there. For example, notice the Ace stuck behind the Queen of Clubs. In order to move that card there needs to be an available King of either Hearts of Diamonds, since cards stack up Solitaire-style in the bottom rows. Since there is no red king available, you'll need to click the Queen and place it in one of the freecells. See how the Ace of Diamonds flys up to it's homecell?

Now you've got the general idea of how the game is played, and you can keep messing around until you've developed your own little strategies. Each game is varying in difficulty so certain tricks you pick up may not work for every game you play.

Remember: unless you're playing on Windows Vista, the screen will flash when you have only one remaining move.

    Hi!

Just wanted to say thanks for the info on this neat game. I deicided to give it a try with your tutorial & energetically I can say that not only did I win game #21260 once, but four times.

Also, I typed in some numbers of my own ( 433, 19666). The latter was a tough one, but I have won each of these games.

Thanks, as I am now on a quest to see how many more I can become victorious.

Very interesting. Nice lens. I also want to share something that you might be interested, bridge is fun to play, but the better you play, the more fun it is. As you improve, you will be fascinated at discovering how much there is to the game. Despite popular opinion to the contrary, bridge is not difficult to learn. Learn how to play bridge contract card game and improve your bridge game in less than five minutes a day. Keep on posting interesting stuff, more power to your blog.

I have played freecell since approx. 2003. I had a supervisor who was a champ at the game. I love it, am addicted, and sometimes play far into the night (like last night). I'm glad I found this lens.
