How to Play Guitar Books, DVDs and Online Classes: Finding the Best

With so many learning options out there for hopeful guitarists, many wonder where to start when it comes to learning to play their instrument. There are so many how to play guitar books, DVDs and online classes available today, that it's hard for beginners to know which one suits them best.

Just to set your mind at ease, the fact that you are at least looking for ways to learn, is already a step in the right direction.

A Step in the Right Direction? Great! But What's the Next Step?

The next step would be to find the right resources to help you. Which is the best for you: a guitar teacher, printed how to play guitar books, guitar DVD's, or online guitar books, DVD's and software?

I want to share with you the road I took in order to start learning about the guitar and become an accomplished guitarist (I'm not bragging here; some people have complimented me on that).

I will also share the Secret to Guitar Training Success with you a bit later on.

Hopefully I can save you some time on your journey to learn how to play the guitar.

My First (Disastrous) Steps

Some people would want someone to hold their hand and show them the ropes. If you are one of these, then a guitar teacher is most probably right for you. I must be honest; when I wanted to learn how to play the guitar, I contacted a guitar tutor and started to go for guitar lessons once a week. But I soon got frustrated: the pace at which I progressed was just much too slow, and in the end, if you calculate the cost of the lessons over a year or more (yes, that's how long it will take you to make some progress) it works out to quite a hefty amount of dough.

So, being the impatient person that I am, I cancelled the lessons and went to the nearest bookshop. Within half-an-hour I walked out of the bookshop with three how to play guitar books in my hand. But, yet again I found that I did not make any progress. Two of the books were overly technical and difficult to get into and the third book started off with a long discussion on guitar and music history that bored me to death. The problem with how to play guitar books only is that you never know that how you are playing sounds right and if you are getting the techniques right, because you cannot hear, neither see in real-time how it is supposed to be done.

The sound of an amplified guitar in a room full of people was so hypnotic and addictive to me that I could cross any kind of border to get on there. -- Eric Clapton

Friendship in Peril

Next, I asked a good friend of mine, who is also an excellent guitar player to help me. The reason why I hadn't asked her before is that she always told me that she had learned by herself to play the guitar and I did not want to look stupid by asking her.

But this time I put my pride in my pocket and asked her. Well, she was kind of busy, but agreed to help me.

However, I soon discovered that she was no teacher at all and we both got impatient with each other. To keep a good friendship intact, I called the whole thing off, but told her about my frustrations and asked her how she managed to learn to play the guitar by herself.

What my Guitarist Friend told me to do

My friend told me that she had learned at first by using a guitar course on DVD, but later on discovered an online course with e-books, DVDs and software to help someone from absolute beginner stage up to expert stage. And the best of all, it is extremely affordable - it cost the same as what I had paid for the three printed how to play guitar books.

I took my friend's advice, but first started to do my own research into online guitar courses. I also discovered many free lesson and free videos proclaiming to teach guitar, but I found most of these a waste of time. I also discovered many online how to play guitar books and courses. Some were terribly expensive (most probably they would be good for the price they charge), and some were very cheap. I bought two or three of the cheap ones, but it was just a waste of money. They had a lot of hype on their sales pages, but the courses were quite useless.

A Step in the Right Direction

I eventually decided to follow my friend's recommendation, and boy was I surprised! That online course showed me exactly where to start and how to do it. Furthermore, I could progress at my own pace with the excellent how to play guitar books, DVD's and software to assist me every inch of the way.

However, I must stress that it took some self-discipline on my part to go through and complete the course. There was no-one to prod me along the way and reprimand me if I did not practice often enough. I had to do it all by myself, but I was determined to learn to play the guitar and I was serious about it. And if you have been reading up to this point, I am certain that you are also serious about learning to play guitar. And therefore I want to recommend this online course consisting of how to play guitar books, DVD's and software to you.
