Of all genres of music, metal is one of the most unique, difficult, and challenging to play. Some of the best shredders of all time come from a heavy metal background. Metal soloing usually consists of arpeggios, sweeping, tapping and a combination of modern blues and classical major and minor scales. Some metal solos and songs have distinct characteristics that can be compared to works of famous composers such as Pachelbel and Beethoven. However, don't hesitate to learn how to play metal solos... they are impressive and demonstrate what real guitar playing is all about.

Iron Maidens' Dave Murray (left) is a master of metal soloing. He was my favorite guitarist from when I was learning how to play. Unfortunately, I would have to skip the solos when I was playing along with my favorite Iron Maiden songs. I've been playing guitar for almost 12 years now and have mastered many Iron Maiden solos. I've come to realize that I've learned the hard way - which is by spending countless hours trying to mimic solos by ear and using tabs. Tabs don't teach you about scales and sweeping, and other very important techniques to playing metal solos.
