How to Prevent and Get Rid of Age Spots

It isn't just getting older that causes age spots, but it is also cause by all that exposure to the sun that our skin gets over the years. Age spots are often referred to as sun spots for this very reason. Smoking, diet high in sugar and fat and lack of vitamins are also contributing factors to age spots.

Preventing Age Spots

It is much easier to prevent age spots than to cure them and the first step to preventing them is to protect your skin from the sun. The sun's harmful rays can do a lot of damage to the skin, including causing skin cancer, so it is vital to always wear sunscreen when you are out and about on a sunny day.

The next step to preventing age spots is to have a healthy diet. A diet high in green leafy vegetables and orange vegetables can help reduce and prevent age spots. These foods are rich in Carotene and Vitamin A which can keep your skin in good condition and help them resist the ultraviolet rays of the sun. These foods are also rich in antioxidants which can help to fight the free radicals that occur when the skin is exposed to too much sun.

Treating Age Spots

If you are at the stage in life when you are already developing age spots then don't be too discouraged as there are treatments available. There are some over the counter products that contain a bleaching agent called Hydroquinone and this works by lightening the appearance of skin discolorations.

If your age spots require stronger treatment then there are some other options that are a little more invasive, such as laser resurfacing. With this procedure the age spots are burnt away using a targeted laser.

Another treatment option is a chemical peel which contains glycolic acid and works by removing layers of skin to reduce the appearance of age spots.

Remember that it is easier to prevent age spots than it is to treat them and it is never too early to start taking care of your skin.

Always use a good sun block when you are out in your sun and wearing a hat and long sleeve shirt is also a good option. Why treat age spots when you can prevent them!

No. I've been lucky so far. And I will continue to slather on sunscreen and stay inside so I can keep it that way.

If it's working, keep doing it!
