The first thing I will tell you about how to prevent lice is to educate your children. Even if they're not old enough to understand about lice, yet, they can at least learn not to share brushes, combs, headbands, barrettes, or any other items used in or near the hair. If they have long hair, pulling it back can help. I have also found using a styling product like hair spray or mousse can help. When these products are in the hair, it is more difficult for the nits to stick to the hair.

Another thing that is very important on how to prevent lice is staying informed. Make sure you know your child's school's policy on head lice. How often do they perform head checks? Do they do head checks at all? Let your child's teacher know that you want to be informed if there are any cases of head lice in the school. Then you can be prepared and do periodic checks on your child's head every few days. One thing I do not recommend is telling your child to stay away from other children with lice. This would help prevent it, but imagine how it makes that child feel, being singled out and none of the other kids wanting to be around them?
