How To Prevent the Red Ring of Death

So you've heard a lot about the red ring of death, but so far your Xbox 360 is working just fine, and you'd like to keep it that way. Read on to learn how you can prevent the red ring of death.

What Is the Red Ring of Death?

It's when three flashing red lights appear around the power button of your Xbox 360, and it indicates that your Xbox is experiencing a general hardware failure.

If you're experiencing the red ring of death, there are any number of things that could be wrong with your Xbox 360. However, the most common cause of the red ring of death is GPU and/or CPU failure resulting from overheating.

So, to prevent the red ring of death, you must prevent your Xbox 360 from overheating. Here are some ways you can do that.

If you've already experienced the red ring of death, go to RedRingOfDeathCure.com to find out how to fix it.

Check the Location and Position of Your Xbox 360 Console

The Xbox 360 console uses fans, vented openings, and heatsinks for cooling. If the flow of air becomes obstructed, it will become overheated.

Make sure your Xbox is not sitting on the carpet or enclosed in a cabinet or between those short little shelves in your entertainment center. The console releases most of its heat from the sides rather than the top and bottom. So try to stand it up and give it plenty of room to breathe.

Dust Your Xbox 360 Often

Dust, pet hair, and lint can block the vents in your console and cause overheating.

Dust can also get into the fan axles and cause them to bind up. The dragging fans can place an extra demand on the power supply which can disrupt the constant voltage needed for the motherboard and the graphics processing unit (GPU) and the central processing unit (CPU). As a result, they will stop working and lock up, and you will get the Xbox 360 red ring of death.

Blow all the dust out carefully and completely with canned air or use a vacuum. You can open the box for thorough cleaning, just remember this will void your warranty.

Remove Your Discs From Your DVD Drive

If you leave your games or movies in the dvd drive when you power down the Xbox 360 console, the spinning disc creates a whirlwind that can suck more dust and debris into your console. Take the disc out before you power down.

Check the Location of the Power Brick on Your Xbox 360

The AC adapter (or power brick) can also overheat. Don't let it sit on the carpet -- get it up off the floor. Place it on a book or a table. If it still overheats, try placing it across an empty box for further ventilation.

Choose Peripherals Wisely

Don't use the Nyko Intercooler or any other unlicensed peripheral that either covers the vents of your Xbox 360 console or plugs in to your systems AC input.

It's possible for the intercooler to drain power from the console which can overheat the AC power input and result in hardware failure. Using a Nyko Intercooler can void your warranty if the RMA (return material authorization) processor notices the "brown discoloration" around the system's AC input that can be caused by using the intercooler.

Instead, use a vertical stand type cooling system like the one in this photo.

Perform Preventive Surgery on Your Xbox 360

The most common cause of the red ring of death is GPU and/or CPU failure resulting from overheating.

If your warranty has expired and you're okay with opening your console, you can replace the hardware that holds the heatsinks to the GPU and CPU. The heatsinks are held in place by x-clamps. You'll need to replace the hardware that holds the x-clamps to the motherboard.

I know it sounds complicated, but it's not that hard if you have the proper parts, tools, and instructions. Just purchase the kit and follow the instructions. This will permanently fix your Xbox 360.
