Using Advanced Features, Plus Promoting & Marketing Your Shop

I have had a Cafepress shop for a few years, so I have learned a few tips and tricks for promoting and marketing the shop, as the more visitors you attract, hopefully the more sales you will get. You will find a tutorial below which I have written to help you make use of the advanced features on offer in premium shops such as how to bulk add products, plus links to general shop help and advice on how to promote and market your shop.

This is a beginner's guide, so you don't necessarily need any prior experience of designing to use Cafepress, although obviously practice does make you better over time. Click here for part 1 of my beginner's guide (how to open a shop), here for part 2 of my beginner's guide (how to create, upload and tag your images), and here for part 3 of my beginner's guide (how to add and organize products in your shop).

The golden rule with any designing is of course DON'T COPY! You can get into big trouble for copying, whether it's a celebrities face, a TV programme name, a brand slogan, or someone else's original idea or design. So always come up with your own original designs, thank-you :-)

Cafepress Products

These are examples of the range of products available to design on Cafepress.
The range includes t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, Thermos flasks, SIGG water bottles, Flip Mino gadgets, bags, yoga mats, blankets, aprons and LOTS more.

Always remember to check this page for new product releases so you can bulk add them to your shop as soon as possible. If you'd like to know how to bulk add a product to your shop sections, look at step 1 below.

Click here to visit my shop (where the above designs are sold).

Advanced Features 1: Bulk Adding Products

- In part 1 of this beginner's guide, I skimmed over the advanced features section in premium shops because these tools are best used when products are , and I will now go through these features in full.

- Sign in to Cafepress, click the 'My Shops' tab at the top and find your shop name under 'Premium Shops'.

- Click the shop name (in my case it is applepip).

Advanced Features 1: Bulk Adding Products

- Scroll down to the subtitle 'Advanced Features'.

- Click on 'Bulk Add Products'.

- Locate the product(s) you want to add to more than 1 section at a time, click 'Make Selections' in the chosen category, select the tick box of the products you want to add, and press the green 'Add Selections' button.

- When you have the products you want in the yellow box on the left (see image above), I have chosen to add the FUNtainer Themos Bottle only.

- Scroll down to the 'Select Sections' subsection. There are 4 options. Choose the option which fits what you want to do. I am going to select 'choose individual sections' because I will only be adding the product to 2 section.

Advanced Features 1: Bulk Adding Products

- A box (as shown above) appears when I select 'Choose Individual Sections', which lists all of the sections in your shop. I selected the tick boxes next to 'The Template' and the 'Animal Designs' section. When you select a section, all of the sections inside that title section are selected too (i.e. the 'Lion' section).

- Click the green 'Preview Products' button.

- Wait for the pop-up page to finish loading, check again that the correct sections are selected, and then click the 'create products' button.

- Wait for it to finish, then check through your new products and re-size the images if necessary.

Advanced Features 2: Bulk Removing Products

- Go back to the Advanced Features list on the Shop Management page.

- Click 'Bulk Remove Products'. This is for if you want to remove products from different sections all at once.

- The process is exactly the same as the bulk adding one, but obviously with the opposite effect. See the 3 steps above to see how that's done.

Advanced Features 3: Changing Prices Storewide

- Go back to the Shop Management page again and click on the only advanced feature that hasn't been covered yet: 'Change Storewide Product Prices'.

- There are 3 ways to change the prices throughout your entire shop on this page:

* The first is to click the blue 'Synch all products to match Marketplace sell price' link - located above the product list. This will match your shop prices to the marketplace prices.

* The second option is to use the drop-down menu where it says 'Add a fixed markup'. You can choose a markup amount to add to every single product in your shop.

* The third (and my favourite method) is to add individually chosen markup amounts for each product in your shop. To do this, add markup amounts you want ($) in the blue 'New Markup' column. If you leave a space in this column blank, the markup will remain unchanged.
Click the blue 'fetch' link next to any blank space to see the current total price (base price + markup) being charged for that particular product in your shop already.

- Click the green 'Save' button at the bottom of the page when you have finished changing the markups.

Using Squidoo To Promote Your Shop

This page is called a Squidoo lens. You can create your own by following these instructions.

For promoting your Cafepress store on Squidoo, you can add a Text Module to your lens in which you can write about your shop. You could add a Text with BIG Picture module to include a large photo of some of your shop designs. And most importantly, you could add a Cafepress module to your lens which can link directly to, and sell directly from, your own Cafepress shop (as shown in an example above).

Things to do to Make Your Shop a Success

  • Add as many designs as possible. The more you have, the more likely you are to sell one - but make sure they are quality designs too
  • Design for a niche i.e. create original designs on a theme with little or no competition
  • Add designs often so your shop has regular new content. This is good for search engine optimization
  • Print out business cards for your shop and hand them out to your friends and family
  • Wear your designs often, and if anyone asks about your t-shirt/hoodie, give them a business card
  • Look around the internet for places to display your banner or advertise your shop for free. Wherever you can get a 'backlink' i.e. a link to your shop on another website, go for it.
  • If you have a blog, blog about new designs in your shop. Advertise your shop and designs on Facebook and Twitter too.
  • Join and participate in forums. Have a link to your shop in your 'signature', but make sure this is allowed in the rules of the forum. DO NOT SPAM though - people hate that. Simply participate in discussions on the forums, and hope people will click the link to your shop in your signature.
  • Tag your images with relevant keywords
  • Price your products appropriately. Nobody is going to buy a sticker for $20!
  • Print bumper stickers with your shop website on and stick it on all of your household's cars.
  • Provide a wide range of products for each image. Don't just put each image on 3 t-shirts and a hoodie for example, put them on as many products as are appropriate.
  • Re-size the images on the products so that they fit well. Nobody will buy a product with a miniscule image on that you can barely see, or one with an image too big so that some of it is cut-off/not visible.
  • Have clear, quality images
  • Add titles and descriptions to all of your products. Use keywords as much as possible, but also make your text make sense and not spammy.
