How To Purchase A New Computer
Ranked #13,185 in Computers & Electronics, #267,043 overall
So Many Computers To Choose From
There are so many new computers at the local electronics retailer it can be difficult to decide which one is best for your needs, but if you educate yourself a bit before you go to the store, you have a much better chance of getting exactly what you need without wasting money on features you don't need.
Decide What You Need
The first thing you want to consider when buying a new computer is what you need your computer to be able to do.Think about what you want to use your new computer for.
*Lowest Priced Computers-are great for basic computing like surfing the net, email, online banking and word processing. These computers sometimes take a little longer to perform tasks and the system in general runs just a bit slower than more expensive models.
*Mid-Priced Computers-the mid-priced computer does the same things the lower-priced computer does but it does it a bit faster. In general, the more you pay the faster the processor and the faster it performs.
*Gaming-if the main reason you want a new computer is to play games, then you should simply buy a computer with the fastest processor and the best graphics card(s) you can afford.
*Video Editing or Desktop Publishing-you will need a fast processor, large amounts of hard drive space, and an expensive graphics card.
*Business-if your new computer is to be used for your business then you will want to look at systems designed for this purpose. Most of the manufacturers produce a line of business computers.
*Special Needs-if you are visually impaired you could purchase a special keyboard or a voice synthesizer.
*Specific Software-if you are purchasing a computer to use a specific kind of software be sure you select a computer that meets the specifications on the software box.
*Specialized Peripheral Devices-make sure your new PC can support whatever peripheral devices you may have need of like a joystick, digital camera, graphics tablet, light pen, scanner, etc...
Once you have some idea of what you want to use your computer for, you should go to some of the local electronics stores to look at what is available. Write down the brand, model number, and the price of a few possibilities.
If you aren't in a big hurry, you might go home and Google the brands and model numbers you noted when you were in the store.
If your Google search result yields a lot of complaints from people who already own the computer, you might want to consider another model. If a lot of people say the manufacturer wasn't helpful in fixing problems they had that were under warranty, you might want to consider a different brand.
It might also be useful to check the online price of the PCs you are interested in, and check several of the computer stores in your town to see who has the best price. Best Buy, hhgregg, Office Depot, Staples, Office Max, Costco, and Sam's Club all sell computers.
Before I purchase anything from Best Buy in the store, I always check the price at bestbuy.com first because I've noticed the in store price is often more than the online price. If the price is cheaper online, you can go to the customer service counter in the store and they will price match it for you.
