How to Put Printer Ink Cartriges in HP Photosmart Printers

Introduction To Inserting Ink Cartridges in HP Photosmart Computer Printers

I remember decades ago when computers were just coming onto the scene and there were some who said that it would be the end of paper as we know it. With the ability to view anything and everything on the computer screen we entered a hopeful stage where the use of paper, and the clutter it causes, would be dramatically reduced.

It turns out that the opposite has happened. With the easy-to-use office programs and wicked fast printers now available, printing out reams of paper has never been easier. Computer printers have never had such a workout!

As a whole, we go through a lot of paper due to all this printing. Using up paper leads to using up ink. Using up ink means we all eventually have to replace the ink in our printer someday. It is just a matter of hours, days, weeks or months but we all have to do it.

Loading ink cartridges into your HP Photosmart printer is easy to do if you your follow just a few simple steps. If you haven't loaded ink into your HP printer or if it has been a long time, this article will show you what to do and having you up and printing in no time.

The first step is opening what I call the "outer door" of the printer. This door is located in the front, center area of the printer. You can simply pull it down. There are no latches, handles or buttons to fuss with on the HP Photosmart printer. Just grasp it at the top and pull in gently down toward you.

Step 2 Open The Inner Door

The next step is to open what I call the inner door. As a side note, I realize there are probably actual names for the inner door and outer door on your HP PS printer, I just don't care to look them up. Call me lazy ;-) .... cause I am.

This door is located just on the inside of the outer door. This door has a little more resistance and opens toward you and down.

Go ahead and open this door. There's a slight indentation on the top right portion of the inner door, put a few fingers on there and gently pull toward you and down.

Step 3 Watch the Ink Trolley Come on Over

The sockets that hold the ink cartridges will then begin to trolley on over. You'll find them at the center of the inside of the printer. You'll see the whole thing appear magically right before your eyes :-)

If you have never put ink in your printer, it will look like the picture I displayed right next to this "Step 3." If this is the case, skip to the next step, if not read the next paragraph.

If you have put ink in there before, you'll see two (likely empty) ink cartridges. If there are ink cartridges in the printer for you to replace, simply put your finger on the top edge of the cartridge and gently press down. You should here a slight click as it drops. Then just pull it out.

Step 4 Grab Your Ink Cartridge

OK, now grab your ink cartridge. I started with the one shown. This is the one that came with the printer. It has a purple top.

Step 5 Remove the Plastic

You know those plastic barriers that come with just about any electronic device? The plastic on your computer monitor screen when you buy it, the plastic on your cell phone screen, the plastic on your laptop, etc.? Ink, as you probably know, has this barrier as well. Go ahead and pull all the plastic off.

Step 6 Prepare for Entry

Let's use two pictures here as our guide. Do you see the picture above in Step 5? See that gold/bronze square just under the plastic on the other side of my thumb? When you insert the ink into your printer, you'll want that pointing straight into the printer.

Do you see the picture in this step? The area you see pictured (with the label) is the area you want facing up. So in other words, you want the gold/bronze facing the printer and the label on top as you insert the ink. Now you have the cartridge in the right direction.

Step 7 Prepare to Dock

Slide the cartridge into the left side portion. This side will be colored purple. Purple cartridge into purple dock. Gently push it all the way in and then upwards. You'll hear it snap in tight.

If you let go and the ink cartridge drops to the floor like an amateur that has gone 12 rounds with a pro, you didn't click it in right. Try again.

Step 8 Get the Other Guy In There Too!

OK, repeat all of the steps above for your second ink cartridge except put the cartridge into the right portion.

Step 9 You Did It!

If your ink now looks like the picture next to this step then you've done a really great job loading your HP Photosmart printer. Close both the "inner" and "outer" doors (that instruction has a prison-feel to it) and you are ready to rock and roll. You and your computer can now start printing away at will.
