How to Raise Turkeys - Common Mistakes and Problems to Avoid When Raising Turkeys

If you are just beginning to learn how to raise turkeys, you need to do any of research. While turkeys are relatively easy to raise there are some common mistakes that could happen that can be avoided with a little bit of research.

Tips For Successful Start When Learning How To Raise Turkeys

One of the things you need to be careful of when your first beginning to raise turkeys is that they need a certain amount of warmth and will get it one way or another. Often, turkeys may pile up on each other smothering each other in order to stay warm, resulting in death of the lower ones. You can solve some of these problems by making sure there is enough heat sources for the amount of turkeys you are growing. You may need a red lamp for every set of 20 turkeys within your turkey herd. By making sure you have enough warmth as well as not having corners for them to pile up in their habitat, you can avoid this common problem and death.

You'll also find turkeys need a certain amount of particular vitamins and nutrients in order to grow healthy. While your birds may be doing well when immature, as they grow if they don't get the proper nutrients bare legs can actually grow crooked to the point where they cannot walk. This can be solved by making sure you're fulfilling all of their vitamin and nutrient needs via processed turkey feed, perhaps alfalfa, or vitamins and minerals in their water. Just make sure you're getting the right amount for your turkeys and if you're keeping turkeys, you cannot use processed food, vitamins or even medicine.

Also, diarrhea is a common problem in turkey herds. You can try to avoid this by again giving them antibiotics on a regular basis, but some people have found that acidophilus in the water works very well. This is great, if you're raising organic turkeys, as acidophilus is a natural inhibitor of diarrhea. If despite this you wind up with diarrhea in your turkey herd, you will have to put them on antibiotics, and it's usually something you put in their water.

Rearing turkey is not difficult, but there are some common problems that are associated with turkey herds. Read up on your Internet, there are several stories available that will show you exactly how people encountered the problems, and exactly how they solve them. Turkeys can be great for a small farm, and you can even raise them as free range turkeys and wind up marketing them as organic or free range.

Look to common organic turkey sites, turkey farm sites, and other sites concerning raising turkeys and you'll have a lot of information at your fingertips. Remember, turkeys main concern is going to be warmth and enough food and water to solve their vitamin and nutrient needs. Make sure that you've an optimum and with no corners for turkeys and then give them their food and water that they need to survive and thrive.

How To Raise Baby Turkeys

Considerations Before Even Beginning To Operate Any Livestock At Home

raising turkeys

After reading this, you will have more information on how to raise baby turkeys.

If you have a space to spare, it is a wise to raise baby turkeys indoors. Doing so with turkey housing will give you fewer problems with bad weather and predators. An ideal housing for turkeys would be about six square feet of floor space per turkey. A spare room in your barn or even a garage will be fine.

Another option is to let the turkeys roam free in a fenced-in yard after about the second month of age. Though this is a risky option since some turkeys may fly over the fence or some animals might break in and attack your turkeys.

You can order baby turkeys from an instate hatchery. The less distance and time involved during the baby turkeys' transport, the better their condition will be upon their arrival.

If you plan to raise 10 or more baby turkeys, you need to buy a 100-pound bag of turkey starter containing medication that prevents coccidiosis, which is a common intestinal disease. Turkeys would immediately develop immunity to coccidiosis while feeding on medicated starter feed.

They also need a warm temperature of 100°F; you can drop the temperature to 5° each week. It is best that you keep a thermometer for the first two to three weeks. They may need heat up to six weeks of age.

If you plan to raise baby turkeys, a red infrared heat lamp is ideal. You can mount it in a porcelain socket that is attached to an extension cord, and then hung by a chain. The bulb should be suspended at least 18" above.

You might need to set some time to spend with them for the first hour since you have to make sure that the young birds find the feed and the water. Make sure not to leave open pails or boxes on the floor. It is hard to raise baby turkeys because they tend to be very curious and might jump into such a container. There should only be the feed, water, and the heat in the room.

Baby turkeys are known to start picking on each other resulting to bleeding, even death. To prevent this, you can cut off one-half of their upper beak at 10 days of age.

When the turkeys are about six to eight weeks of age, start using turkey growing ration containing medication against blackhead disease.

One final note, you might want to consult local zoning and building ordinances before even beginning to operate any household livestock. You also have to consider its impact on your neighbors.

If you think you still need guidance on how to raise baby turkeys, consulting existing turkey owners and farmers will certainly be a big help. If you would like to learn more about raising turkeys correctly, please visit: http://howtoraiseturkeys.com
