Hello, I started a treatment with cortisonen injections for my hypertrophic scars a couple weeks ago, but I barely notice the effects (really big scars).. The scars were like a month old when I started the treatment, and I'm also using Contractubex. I haven't tried silicone sheets beacause they're not available in my country x(

How long do I have to wait to see improvement on my scars?
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:55 am | delete
Hi, it really depends on the type of scar, genetics, lifestyle, skin type, and much more variables.
  • Porter Apr 24, 2012 @ 8:43 pm | delete
could you give me an estimate?
  • Beas Apr 25, 2012 @ 5:43 am | delete
Generally scars may take up to 1,5 to 2 years to fully mature.
  • Porter May 6, 2012 @ 3:37 am | delete
(now I can see the comments :D)

Oh thanks x) I was asking just because it's a little bit annoying that people stare at my arms and ask what happened to them x)

Hi, i have gel cream and Sheet, the sheet is hard to keep on so ive put the cream on then the sheet on top, do you think this is ok, or will this stop them from working?
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:53 am | delete
Hi Andy. Mostly it is not. Instructions should be on the package of the sheets. I used either a cream or sheets. But not at the same time. I used tape (e.g. paper, silk, tape) to keep the silicone sheets attached.

Hi! I'm 24 and have recently had a 3rd surgery on my knee (1st. Meniscus Repair, 2nd ACL Reconstruction, 3rd Bone Graft to fill in the hole that had expanded) and in 3 to 6 months I will have to have a 4th surgery to replace my ACL with a donor graft. The tiny arthoscopic scars I am not worried about, however the one below my knee that has already had 3 surgeries (2002, 2009 and 2 weeks ago). This scar is extremely painful, itchy and tight. When it healed from 2009 it was very hyperpigmented and still painful to rub, but I did to loosen any scar tissue. My question is, how will the multiple surgeries on the same spot affect scar making and nerves and etc?
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:51 am | delete
I really don't know Heather, I think you should ask a medical expert about that. Sorry I can't be of some help.

Um.. Well I have these spots on my legs and I don't know what they are so I became desperate to get them to disappear do I thought this freeze off stuff for warts at the time I didn't know it wa just for warts and now it's red and when it get wet it turns even more red my sister told me it would be there for life and I would never be able to wear shorts again so she has me freaking out please give me advice I feel like if I do wear shorts I stick out to much like I'm a outcast so please help me I am really scared
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:48 am | delete
Hard for me to say Leah since I don't know what these spots are either. I think you should ask a dermatologist about the spots and the marks left by the warts product. Best of luck.

Hello. My 4 year old daughter burned herself with boiling hot soup 9 months ago on her chest. After many trips to the burn center the healing of her burn is coming along nicely. There were 2 quarter size areas that burned a little deeper and they were concerned about scarring. Daily I massage her chest with moisturizer as that is what the burn center told me to do. I rarely notice her burn now, unless she runs around or takes a bath, as she gets hot, I can see the burn area turn red. I am concerned about one of the quarter sized areas, when I look very closely, there are little streaks of white lines, almost like a basket weave, it's barely raised, but I can clearly see this skin to look a bit different than the rest. Is there anything I can do to make that skin look better? Or is this inevitably, the way it will look forever?
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:46 am | delete
Hi Mitch, I'm not sure and I have no personal experience with burn scars. All I do know is that silicone sheeting has been used in burn centers during the past decades. Did you ask the people at your burn center about silicone sheets? I think you are doing well by moisturizing (and probably massaging?). If there's anything the can improve your daughter's scar I think it will be silicone sheets. Hope this helps.

Hello, I am 18 years old.I have many scars from self injury.I no longer self injure, but I have the scars as memories.I have two wide, red scars on my upper arms. They are both from about two years ago, and are still very red.One of them I had to get stitches for, the other I did not.The one that did not have to get stitches turned into a hypotrophic scar, but eventually it has become flat.
Both scars are still painful sometimes. Why are they taking so long to heal, and what should I do to help them? I'm so tired of my past keeping me from living to my fullest. :/ I just want to not have to hide my arms, that would be so wonderful.
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:41 am | delete
Hi Jessie, you can use silicone sheets to reduce the redness of your scars (they may also relief pain) but sadly they will, most likely, stay visible. Maybe you can ask a cosmetic surgeon if your scars can be improved by surgical excision. I think the best thing would be to accept that you had to endure such a hard time in your life. And that there are marks that will be visible to others. (so you don't have to hide them anymore) I myself know from experience that this is very hard. Especially when your wounds are fresh and scars are relatively new. But time will help. I don't know if this is of any help to you because I didn't want to hear such things a few years ago either. Wish you all the best, Tim

Hi, A few weeks ago I had Veinwave treatment for red veins and find that its left small indented scars on my face. They are worse than the veins, at least I could cover those. Whats the best things to treat them, they're not big but, in certain light, are noticeable.
  • Beas Apr 24, 2012 @ 10:30 am | delete
I think I would keep them hydrated, e.g. by using Vaseline or a good moisturizer of your liking. In time they will probably fade away.

Hi! I'm 14 and had hip surgery 4 1/2 yrs ago. The scar is around 10'' and is still raised, pink and itchy. I've tried everything I can think of, like gels and massage, but nothing works. Is it normal to have stayed this long and is there anything else you think I should try?
  • Beas Apr 6, 2012 @ 11:38 am | delete
Hi Kasey, did you try silicone sheets?
  • Kasey Apr 6, 2012 @ 1:33 pm | delete
    Yes but they didn't work
  • Jason Apr 6, 2012 @ 4:10 am | delete
Hey one more quick question. I noticed the Kelocote and I also saw scar away silicone gel with roll on applicator which had pretty good reviews. What do you think about this one?
  • Jason Apr 6, 2012 @ 3:48 am | delete
Hello. About a year ago I was in a car wreck and got 2 bad cuts on my face, one below my left eye and one along the bridge of my eyebrow. From the start I have used everything I could think of, Vitamin E, neosporin, aloe vera, maderma, but I can't seem to get the redness out of the one below my eye and it really bothers me. The cut above my eye's redness has gone but the one below just stand out ugh. Do you think I should take a chance with silicone sheets or Kelocote? Is it too late or do you think the redness may still fade some because I've had a few other cuts and they have turned into little white lines... I just wish so bad that the one on my face would do the same!! :(

Hello I had a question regarding this scar information. I recently had a scab fall off from my left sideburn area and it is somewhat red or pink. I put this vaseline gel to keep it fresh. How long do you think it will fade away and regain its color.?Makes me feel uncomfortable.
  • Beas Apr 5, 2012 @ 4:43 am | delete
Hi Jordan, I can imagine your concerns but nobody can tell how long it will take. It depends on so much things. One of the most crucial things to do, protect it from sunshine. Wear sunblock religiously. Good luck!
  • Pilo Mar 29, 2012 @ 6:18 am | delete
Great information, I see you provide solutions based on science. Another skin care product that is clinically proven (although not for scars but wrinkles) is Natox. You can read an extensive Natox review here.

My husband had a pretty bad infection on his face which has now cleared-up but the skin is still healing. for the past 6 months the scar will go from bright red to light pink to seemingly gone. However, everytime it gets bright red again, he gets really upset. He's seeing a dermatologist and trying alot of things on your list but he won't go outside to be around people when it gets red! Do you have any advice on how to soothe him? I've said everything from 'its not as noticible as you think' to 'snap out of it!'
  • Beas Mar 28, 2012 @ 4:35 pm | delete
Hi Mami G, that's a good question. I remember how I initially thought I would never take of my shirt anymore, embarrassed to show my scars. But eventually this feeling faded, as did the scars. The scars are still visible but I learned to deal with their presence. I don't know how to soothe him because I know that such advice often is dismissed. The only thing I can come up with is that you should try to talk with him about what upsets him. What he feels when he is out in public and his scar is bright red again. Maybe this way you can help him out.

I had a lentigo maligna removed from my forehead in January, leaving a 3" scar that is healing quite nicely. I've used emu oil to massage it (after the wound healed) and copper peptides to promote skin renewal. The redness of the scar has also mostly faded.

But . . . this weekend my wife and I went for an hours' long bike ride during which I wore a pretty tight baseball cap. When we got home, I noticed that the area above the scar was swollen and slightly red. It lasted through the next day. My wife thought it might be a hive or bug bite, but It didn't itch or hurt; it was just swollen.

Is this swelling possibly related to the constriction of the hat band near the scar? This is my favorite hat that I've worn for years, but I never had a scar on my forehead until recently. Sooo . . .
  • Beas Mar 27, 2012 @ 12:45 pm | delete
Hi Tucky, maybe it could be a result of the presence of the scar tissue since this tissue is inferior to normal skin it may have caused a temporary swelling. But that's just me theorizing.
  • rebecca Mar 21, 2012 @ 6:25 pm | delete
I had heart surgery in october 2010, and the top of my scar is raised and red, i thought it would of faded like the rest of the scar, is it normal to have a little bit of my scar to be red and raised?
  • Beas Mar 22, 2012 @ 12:50 pm | delete
Hi rebecca, did that part get (more) sunshine? It could be because it was more exposed since it's at the top. I think it's normal because there are many reasons scar healing may delay. In my case a part of my sternal scar didn't heal as quickly because part of the wound was infected.
  • rebecca Mar 22, 2012 @ 3:39 pm | delete
Its hard to explain because my scar the top is red and raised, then theres a little gap where its normal, then theres another little raised bit thats also red?
  • Beas Mar 28, 2012 @ 4:37 pm | delete
In my case different parts of the same scar also healed differently. I think it's normal.
  • porter Mar 17, 2012 @ 2:11 pm | delete
I had an accident with caustic soda, I poured it in a clogged pipe which I didn't know it was almost full of water, and there was an explosive reaction where I resulted with burns in my arms and face. That was in January. A couple weeks ago, the last scab on my arm fell off, but the big scars now are red and prominent (hypertrophic) and SOMETIMES they are itchy or a little painful. I've been putting aloe vera gel on them, because it helped to dry the scabs I had. I want to know if these scars are going to be permanent or something, because they're always red and swollen, and this past week I started going out without long sleeves (since I no longer have delicate scabs), so my scars have been exposed to sunlight :/, and I live in a tropical country and it's really hot LOL... I want to know if I have to wait for the scars to flatten down, or if I should go to the dermathologist to start a treatment as soon as possible...
  • Beas Mar 17, 2012 @ 3:07 pm | delete
I can't say if they will be permanent, but they will fade eventually. If I were you I would certainly use sunscreen because sunlight will worsen their appearance and may cause them to become permanent. The best OTC treatment for hypertrophic scars are silicone sheets or creams. InviCible also makes a good cream. At best your dermatologist will advice you to use these. Or he or she may recommend less invasive treatments such as steroid injections but these are to flatten raised scars. Since there is the risk on side effects I would start with a silicone cream or sheets first.

Hi, I recieved two stitches on my cheekbone on my face last july, i started off using vitamin E oil and now, for the past 4 months ive been using bio oil. the scar has smoothened out a lot and is almost slightly indented but still quite red. what can i do to improve this redness and help restore it to a more natural colour?
    thank you
  • Beas Mar 16, 2012 @ 5:24 am | delete
Hi Kevin, I recommend a silicone gel cream. The link just above here that says Lighten Dark Spots will bring you to a website about a popular cream that not only has silicones in it but also some proven effective, safe, natural ingredients.

    Hi Beas,

i had a stitch on my forehead 7 months ago. Sometimes now and then, it will turned light pink then few weeks later it'll turned red again. It is going on and off. I am applying this silicon gel, dermatix for 7 months already, why is that so? Im pretty upset and worried as a girl
  • Beas Mar 15, 2012 @ 5:30 pm | delete
Hi averil, do you protect it against sunshine (tanning beds etc)? It may just be because the scar healing process is still going on.
  • jkr888 Mar 12, 2012 @ 4:33 pm | delete
    Hi "Beas"
    Interesting article!!
I had an infection on my forehead 3months ago that eventually came to a boil and then all the infection came out naturally. It was very painful and the boil was proud on my forehead I would say at least 3 cm. Once infection was all out, it healed quite quick but now have been left with a circular mark that is still around 1 cm proud on my forehead. It is a little red and when I run my finger over it it feels like the top 1/2 of a marble (if that makes sense). I have been using bio oil for a few weeks but nothing changed and have just ordered a gel called "Heal Gel" desinged by plastic sergions which I am using daily. Can you advise if this "scar" will ever go, or what I need to do to improve its appearance. Thanks for your time.
  • Beas Mar 13, 2012 @ 1:49 pm | delete
Hi there, I didn't know about Heal Gel but I looked it up. I see it has silicones in it among other ingredients. Some of these substances are promising so it may very well be an effective product according to my humble opinion. In theory it has ingredients that reducing bruising and inflammation as well as accelerate the scar healing process. Personally, I would stick with it for a while and if you see no results I would switch to silicone sheets. Also scar massage may help your scar get softer, more pliable, and eventually less prominent. Hope this helps a bit.

i recently about 2 month ago had a mole removed and the dermatologist said that there wouldn't be anything but a flat pink circle and now i have a hole. Will this heal or do i need plastic surgery? I am so upset about this. Please help!
  • Beas Mar 13, 2012 @ 1:40 pm | delete
Such indentation may very well improve within the next months. If it does not it can be removed by excision with sutures. This usually results in a thin, short, cosmetically acceptable line. Good luck!

First of all, I must congratulate you for writing this interesting article. I like the way you highlighted important facts, posted pictures/ references etc. Keep up the good work.

3.5 months ago, I fell from a bike and got two cuts on my arm. One is 2 cm long and the other 2.5 cm. I used contractubex ointment as suggested by my doctor, but I hardly notice any improvement in my scars. Although my scars are flat and a bit wide, I am worried if the redness will remain for a long time. I am desperately looking for products to reduce the deep red color of my scars. You inspired me to order Invicible today. What else would you suggest to help get rid of my embarrassing scars? Thank you.
  • Beas Mar 8, 2012 @ 7:19 pm | delete
Thanks for the kind words! I always recommend silicone sheets and InviCible because these have clinical studies showing efficacy. And because I have used silicones myself. Apart from that I think your scar will fade eventually. It is very young in scar healing terms. (scars may take up to two years to fully mature).
  • Breanne Mar 5, 2012 @ 3:40 am | delete
Hi there, just wanted some information as I'm confused about my scars.
I have a few scars on my upper arms that have the qualities of hypertrophic scarring but the timing doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The scars are over a year old and had already faded to white but only recently they've become dark red and really puffed up and itchy. Is this still hypertrophic scarring? Why would it be happening after so long?
  • Beas Mar 8, 2012 @ 7:14 pm | delete
Hi Breanne, I have never heard about that. If they appear to be hypertrophic they probably are but I'm no real expert. Maybe you can post your question on realself.com. They have experts answering questions such as yours. In my opinion not all answers are equally good but you may get wiser.

i was bitten on my hand by a dog three months ago.It was in the fleshy part at the base of the thumb. It was torn with part of it raw flesh. It healed without infection and new skin grew across but I now havehard white lumps below the skin which are most prominent when I stretch my thumb. The area is sore when touched but doesn't hurt otherwise. I have no idea what this is and what to do to treat it
  • Beas Mar 8, 2012 @ 7:05 pm | delete
I don't know, I guess these lumps may be internal scar tissue, also referred to as adhesions. Maybe scar massage can make the tissue more pliable but to be sure I would ask a dermatologist or maybe check out a forum or something. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hello. I've had this slightly indented scar on my right cheek for close to a year and a half now. It's still noticeably red, or at least it is to me. I've tried Scaraway ointment, Bio-Oil, peels, and now for the past 3 months I've been using the silicone sheets on it everyday. Is there anything else I can do to fade this redness any faster? Will this redness ever fade? Thanks.
  • Beas Mar 8, 2012 @ 6:59 pm | delete
I think it will, for most scars it will. Maybe give it some more time. If it doesn't improve you might want to try microneedling (to raise the indented scar) possibly in combination with a safe but effective lightening cream. One that contains stable vitamin C and licorice extract.

I had exploratory surgery 12.14.2011 and it left me with about 1 1/2" of scar on my chest, quite visible in most of my clothes and everything low cut at all.
I have been masaging with ScarAway Silicon Gel Diminishing Serum - with the three little ball berrings to facilitate massage as well as apply the gel. I think I have keloid scar tissue. Would you recommend changing to the strips? they would show pretty badly. What is your evaluation of these tube gel applicators? It hasn't been that long and I have onlu starting massaging more actively lately because its painful to touch. I have not seen strips or cream in my Parmacy. Thanks!
    Tess
  • Beas Mar 2, 2012 @ 5:15 am | delete
Hi Tess, I have no experience with the massaging applicator nor heard any experiences from my visitors. Yes, I think I would change to strips. Some studies indicate that gels are just as effective but other studies show sheets to be (slightly) more effective. Hope your scar will fade nicely. Good luck!

Hi i had surgery about 5 months ago and have a "J" like incision that measures about 13 inches. My scar is very red and raised, what would you recommend using? It doesn't look like the patches are very long and i would have to use a lot of them. Thanks
  • Beas Mar 2, 2012 @ 5:08 am | delete
Hi Stacey, ScarAway's long sheets measure 7 inches so you would have to use at least two and apart from that the shape of your scar makes it even more inconvenient so I think I would use a silicone gel. (e.g. Kelocote, Zeraderm, or ScarAway serum).
  • Sheila Feb 29, 2012 @ 11:47 am | delete
Hi I had mohs surgery on my upper lip a week ago and in regards to the massage you mentioned, when is it safe to start this. I am not sure when it is fully healed. I still have disolvable stiches under the skin but healing well so far. Would be safe after two/three weeks or is this too soon. What are people's experiences on here.
  • Beas Mar 1, 2012 @ 10:18 am | delete
Hard to say from here Sheila but in general it is recommended to start out very gently. Monitor how the scar and surrounding tissue reacts. Does it get very red then stop. Does it hurt also stop. In any case, do not start before the wound has fully healed. Hope this helps.
  • Sheila Mar 3, 2012 @ 6:06 pm | delete
That's really helpful. I guess it is hard to say when skin is healed as it's different from one person to another. I started massaging the surrounding area today as I have some stitches in the surrounding healthy tissue. I will leave it a little longer till I try on the scar.just wanted to thank all those who contribute to this site. It has been invaluable and has helped me feel more positive about the long term results I can achieve.

Hi Rose, your best option is to use a silicone gel such as Kelo-cote or ScarAway serum. Otherwise you could use Vaseline.
  • Allison Feb 27, 2012 @ 2:42 pm | delete
Hi! About 3 months ago, I was washing dishes and the glass broke off, which caused a large and very deep gash on my baby finger knuckle. It was so deep, the lady at the ER was able to poke at my tendon without searching for it. Right now, the skin is very tight, and I can bend my finger, but I still cannot make a fist, and the scar is still red and angry. At times its crazy itchy. Just wondering if you know how long it will take this ugly scar to finally be done healing?
  • Beas Mar 1, 2012 @ 10:10 am | delete
Hi Allison, I can't say how long it will take. It depends on many things. I can tell you about the time I fell off my bike and hurt my little finger. I could not bend it at first. Later on I could also not make a fist because the scar was so rigid. (a part of the skin had been pulled off when I hit the ground). But luckily, after almost a year I was able to make a fist again. Silicone gel will reduce itch and help it heal faster. It will also reduce the risk on keloidal scar tissue. Anyway, make sure to moisturize the scar. Hope this helps. Good luck!

This information is so helpful. Thank you for making this post. I've been struggling with various scars for a good deal of my life. I just had to have surgery in which I'm now going to be looking at having yet another scar on my skin. The wound just finished healing and now it's just a very bright red circle (where the mole was removed). Do you know how soon after a surgery you can start using the silicone patches? I think it's completely closed, but I did only have the surgery about 3 weeks ago. Thank you, again.
  • Beas Mar 1, 2012 @ 10:05 am | delete
Thanks Emily. Normally you can start using silicone sheets when a wound has healed / closed. To be sure check the instructions on the package. Good luck!

After the redness of the scar has completely gone, when using the silicone patches will it fade away the scar too? Or will the scar stay permanent but less noticeable?
  • Beas Mar 2, 2012 @ 6:57 am | delete
My scars didn't fade completely. They got softer and flat. On my face the scars did almost disappear but I suspect that has to do with other factors. (they silicones may have helped). Since scar tissue is not the same as normal skin tissue they are almost always permanent.

My son was scratched on the face with nails in 2 places about 1 month ago. It left a slightly indented 2 inch scar which has become dark brown as he is olive skinned. It is very noticable and I have been worried sick over it. He is 9 years old. I have been using mederma on it 3 times a day without any improvement. What can be used to treat this dark brown scar? I want to diminish the discoloration. What kind of cream can be used to fade it?
  • Beas Mar 1, 2012 @ 10:03 am | delete
Hi Silvana. There's no clinical evidence Mederma helps to fade scars. Certain ingredients such as stable vitamin C and liquorice are backed by science. I added a small section to this page (just above this comment section) with a cream that contains such ingredients. I recommend it for dark scars such as your son's. Also make sure to protect it against sunlight because this will make your son's scar darker. Hope this helps.

  • Beas Mar 1, 2012 @ 9:38 am | delete
Generally they are worn from 12 hours up to 16 or even 24. It depends on the brand and what's convenient. I had trouble shaving my neck because of my scar. I found that I liked using a trimmer better since my scar was rather elevated and bumpy.

hi, i broke my ankle and had to have operation to get bar and pins inserted. the operation resulted in me having to get 8 stitches. the stitches were removed two weeks after op and the scar was then covered and a new cast was put on for a further 4 weeks. however i got the cast off the other day, my scar is quite tender but there is a lot of dry blood that i cant seem to remove as ankle is still soar and i cannot scrub it.........what care would you suggest to me. what creams should i use ? should i keep it covered still etc ?????
  • Beas Feb 22, 2012 @ 10:28 am | delete
Hi steph, to be sure about how to proceed treatment ask your doctor. Personally I would use Medihoney as long as it is a wound and silicone sheets for the scar. But only if that's okay with your medical practitioner. Medihoney dressings keep wounds moist and provide an optimal healing environment that prevents infections. Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

I think you misread my post. I want to preserve the scar- I mean keep it as noticeable as possible. It location makes it hard to put in the sun. So what can I do to make sure it doesn't fade?

7.5 inches from butt crack up..
  • Beas Feb 22, 2012 @ 10:21 am | delete
I guess I did. Maybe you could use sunbeds. Overstretching it will probably make it more noticeable / wider. Vitamin E capsules have shown to worsen scar appearance in some cases as a result of skin irritation.

I have a scar on my knee, it has been there for 9 months now, It is raised and red, and i would like to know when it will heal. I am 12 years old.
  • Beas Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:51 am | delete
No-one can say for sure JJ. If you want to speed things up I recommend silicone sheets or gel. These will reduce redness and make it flat and softer. Best of luck.

Hello, I am 13, and asian, and scraped my knee on a pavement and it happened about 10 months ago. It is red and elevated, however it had lessened in size and now is about the size of a ten cent coin, compared to a fifty cent coin 10 months ago. I would like to know if this is normal, and when can I expect it to fade. Thank you.
  • Beas Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:50 am | delete
Hi Isabel, yes that's normal. It depends from person to person how someone will scar. It may take up to 2 years to fade but it may be sooner. This also depends on the location of the scar and other things such as lifestyle. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Good luck!

Is it normal for a scar to be slightly raised or indented after three months? Is three months to early to tell? Will it even out a little with time?

I'm really worried about it because's it's on my face, right near my cheek. Is there anything I can do, will mederma help?
  • Beas Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:47 am | delete
Yes that's completely normal Christina. Three months is only the beginning. Most scars take up to 1 to 2 years to fully mature. Mederma doesn't really help according to studies. Silicones are proven by science to flatten, soften, normalize color, and reduce itch and pain. They also decrease the risk on development of keloids.

I have a water filled, cyst like bump between my eyebrows and one on each side of my cheek bones. They look like pimples, but when squeezed, they are painful and only clear fluid/waterty fluid comes out. They are red and raised. I believe that they were caused by Botox injections. It would be great, if you can tell me, what I can put on the bumps to take away the redness and flatten them. It looks like I have a red jewel inbetween my eyes, even concealer, will not hide the one between eyes. Please help :)
  • Beas Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:44 am | delete
I'm sorry but I really couldn't tell you Terri. I know from experience that silicones improve hypertrophic scars but I don't know anything about that. I would recommend for you to visit a dermatogist or maybe post your question on a cosmetic surgery forum or something alike. Good luck.

    Hello--
I removed a mole from under my nose/near my cheek 3 months ago. It has left an indentation and is still very red. Should I expect the indentation to level out a bit? I'm kind of nervous it will be noticeable for years.
  • Beas Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:41 am | delete
Hi, I have no personal experience with such scars but I recently read somewhere that that person's scar did 'level up' after a few months. Most scars will improve automatically over time so although I can imagine your concerns I wouldn't worry too much about it.
  • Andres Feb 18, 2012 @ 3:22 am | delete
If one wants to preserve the visibility of a surgery scar how can they go about doing so? Lower spine, eight inches long- can really expose it to sunlight because of location.
  • Beas Feb 21, 2012 @ 9:39 am | delete
Silicones and protecting as much as you can against sunlight.

Hi thank you for all your information here on this page and silicone scar treatment page. I have have ordered the patches and the gel online and am feeling very positive. I just hope they get here quickly (I'm in Australia and they are coming from the UK). I have also been using internal and topical MSM as well as rose hip oil. Have you had any experience with these?

I was just wondering if you had found out any further information yet regarding zinc in the form of a cream and it's moisture repelling action. I ask because I diligently wear a zinc based natural sunscreen on my face whenever I am going to be outside (my scars are on my cheek) and I wear a mineral makeup on top of this. I notice that my scars look a lot worse and more pronounced when I am wearing the sunscreen and makeup then at night time when I put lots of moisturiser and oils on them. I am in a catch 22 because I know sun protection is vital for healing scars but so is moisture. I really don't want to have to use a chemical based sunscreen as these can be even more harmful to the skin. I have 2 sunscreens at the moment one is a purely natural zinc base with a lot of natural oils in it, it's a home made company but does not have a SPF # on it and is very easy to wash my face at the end of the day. The other is an Australian brand called Invisible Zinc. This is SPF 30 and is more zinc like in nature, i.e. a lot harder to wash off at the end of the day, takes about 3 washes. And most probably a lot more drying but a definite spf 30. Do you have any suggestions on sun protection? Thank you so much. I am so happy to have found your pages
  • Beas Feb 14, 2012 @ 3:23 am | delete
Hi Li, I did write a post on rose hip oil once. (http://www.scartreatmentblog.com/rosehip-seed-oil-useful-in-scar-treatment/) Regarding the sun block, I'm sorry but I don't know. If I'm correct there are mixed opinions on the use of zinc. What I know of own experience is that my scars became more red and prominent when I was outside even though I wore sunblock. I suspect this was due to warmth, and thus, increased blood flow. Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe the people on a forum such as SkinCareTalk.com can help you out. Best of luck!

  • Beas Feb 14, 2012 @ 3:14 am | delete
HI Lisa, I would use that yes. There is no clinical proof it works though. Although some experts think it may. Otherwise you can use a silicone gel (e.g. Kelo-cote or ScarAway). They are proven to reduce redness.

Hi, I had cleft lip revision on December 22rd. The surgeon told me that swelling will be gone in three weeks. Now the scar is red, firm, little bit numb and does not seem to come off. It looks thick.I am wondering how long will the scar become less visible. And also, there is small, round bump right at the upper lip where the scar is. Is that abnormal, or it will come off afterward??? Please help! Thank you.
  • Beas Feb 14, 2012 @ 3:10 am | delete
Hi Evan, it takes up to almost two years for scars to fully mature. I would use a silicone gel to make it softer, reduce itch and pain, less red and reduce the risk on keloidal scar tissue. Also massaging it gently is supposed to help improve its appearance. You can also keep it hydrated by using Vaseline or manuka honey (Medihoney). Hope this helps.

    Hey,
I'm not sure if my first comment went through. I was aking if there was any way to help heal my scar. It's from tweezing so its right between my eyebrows. I had done my best trying to help it heal at the beginning. I have now had it for 10 months. Any suggestions to make it fade??
  • Hannah Jan 30, 2012 @ 7:14 pm | delete
    Hi,
I have a scar from tweezing (cause im dumb enough to get a scar from that...) right between my eyebrows, and i hav had it for about 10 months now. It is a slightly different color than my skin, but if i bother it, it will turn pinkish. At first i did put ointment on it, bandaged it over night, and kept it moisturized. I had hoped that time would do its work and heal it, but it doesn't seem to be getting that much better. What do you think I should do??
  • Beas Feb 1, 2012 @ 6:47 am | delete
Hi Hannah, I know from experience that such scars (discolored and raised) improve by using silicone sheets or gels. Also, maybe you could alter your tweezing behavior into gently massaging that area. It will probably improve your scar.

Always good to hear how manuka honey helped people heal. Recognition for this special type of honey is increasing. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Beckah, you can never be sure but I think in time it will. Make sure to keep it protected against UV light, moisturize, and maybe do some massaging.

Hi, I was misdiagnosed to have impetigo (staph infection) when its actually a fungal infection, so I did the treatment for impetigo for weeks by removing the formed crusts and putting on bacterial ointment, after I was told it was fungal I immediately switched to this antifungal called ketonazle...now the infection is nearly gone but I still see redness and some more fully healed spots are more darkened..how do I know if it's scarring or not? Does fungal infection generally scar? And if it is what method do u recommend? I can not moisturize it yet because I need to keep the yeast infection dried to stop it from growing but I do have Manuka honey at home. Cheers

Hi John, I am no medical expert so I don't know but I do know that manuka honey is renowned for its anti-fungal properties. I guess what I would do is ask my doctor if he or she agrees with using manuka honey (most safe is probably a sterilized product e.g. Medihoney). Best of luck!

my daughter slipped and sustained a carpet burn on her cheek approximately four months ago. I have been using silicone gel sheets and keeping the mark hydrated although it is still red. The mark was very red initially once the wound closed and the redness has diminished over time. Is the mark likely to fade away completely over time and if so, how long does it take to fade away?
  • Beas Jan 23, 2012 @ 11:41 am | delete
Yes Melanie, the mark is very likely to fade away completely. It can take up to two years for scars to fully heal (and thus fade to their maximum). I think you are taking great care of it.

Hi, I had surgery 10 months ago, I've been using ointments such as vaseline and mederma to try to fade / get rid of the redness that surrounds it. Unfortunately, it's on my face and it's quite embarrassing. I recently purchased the silicone scar sheest, and I have seen improvements as far as the redness goes, however the scar that was left is still like a gash formation, not your typical line that most patients will get. It's either my doctor removed the stitches to earlier or I don't know, it did not close together real well. So I was wondering what in this case would you do, look into the laser treatment to get rid of the scar tissue underneath and possibly that would reduce the appearance of both the redness and the scar, or keep trying to take care of it day by day.. I'm out of answers.. and feeling quite hopeless Thanks!
  • Beas Jan 23, 2012 @ 11:29 am | delete
Hi John I would massage the scar gently but regularly as well as keep it moisturized. Your scar will probably improve in time. You can always start invasive treatments later on. Hope your scar will fade nicely. Good luck!

Hi! My daughter just had a chemical skin peeling on her face. On the 3rd day after the procedure, it started peeling off. She peeled a part of it and realized after that it's already painful. The part she peeled felt painful after and looked red. She's now on the 5th day of her procedure and the peeled part is still reddish and different from the rest of the skin. Is it already a scar? What should she do?

  • Beas Dec 22, 2011 @ 10:33 am | delete
Hello Lisa, as far as I know goose eggs will not cause scars so I shouldn't worry too much about that. Not if the skin isn't damaged. If it is, make sure to moisturize the wound, e.g. with Medihoney dressings, and treat the scar with a silicone gel. Best, Tim

Hi, I had a tummy tuck 2 months ago and have been told that I no longer need to use the suture strips that were covering my scar. The scar was very pale but within the last 24 hours it has got very red and itchy around the outside. I have a gelzone wrap which was never used after surgery. Is it too late to use this product or do you think that it would help to reduce the redness/itchyness. Also if so, how long should I wear it for? Many thanks, Jo
  • Beas Dec 22, 2011 @ 6:54 am | delete
Hi there JoJo, I'm not sure about that. I think you'd best ask your doctor. Since there are silicones on the inside I assume it will help reduce the itch and redness. Also compression can be beneficial to scar healing but I don't know about starting to use them only after 2 months so therefore I would ask your doctor or surgeon. Tummy tuck scars are known to get worse in the 2nd or 3rd month before they start improving again. Here's some more info on tummy tuck scars and compression garments. Sorry I can't be of more help. All the best.

I also have a scar where it is indented a little and is red/shiny from the cold sores. They seem to follow the upper right side of my lip so they are spaced out by a few centimeters (3 or 4 scars)I am wondering what you would suggest as to help these scars reduce. I am using mederma but don't know how well it is working. Any insight would be great.

Hi, I would use a Medihoney cream because it has excellent hydrating properties but also to use it in case I would get another cold sore. I'm not sure if there's any research yet that proofs its effectiveness on cold sores but there's a big chance it will help fight them off. (considering it's potent antiviral properties) Here's more info on Medihoney and related products. Medihoney products are based on manuka honey which has extraordinary wound healing properties but is also suspected to improve scar appearance by some experts. (no proof yet). Hope this helps.

Hello! My 5 yr old daughter, emily, was doing cartwheels last Friday night, lost her balance, and hit her head on the corner of our end table...resulting in a slit 1cm long. It's right between her eyebrow and her eye. The er doc used dermabond and sent us on our way. I could've done a better job probably; but, anyway, he told us to remove the adhesive strips today and then keep it moist. Being the worrisome mother, I Really don't. Yourwant it to scar. She's very fair skinned, and it's red. What do you recommend...? I've heard emu oil or vitamin e oil, but how do you get that to stay on an active 5 yr old...band-aid? Your thoughts would be Greatly appreciated!
  • Beas Dec 9, 2011 @ 6:22 am | delete
Hi Paula, vitamin E oil may cause skin irritation and worsen scar appearance according to studies. For emu oil there's no evidence it works. Indeed, studies show that moist wounds heal faster. The best you can do is use Medihoney wound gel for the wound (Vaseline also aids wound healing) and a silicone gel for the scar. I hope Emily's scar will improve quickly and nicely. Best, Tim

What is the best treatment for an atrophic scar (one that is slightly indented) leaving a crease apperance. Its about two weeks old,, no redness just a slit looke to it. I was rubbing mederma on it, but have read that it might not be good for these types of scars. Just wondering if there is anything that can be done while it continues to heal that will help the area smooth out; Thanks
  • Beas Dec 8, 2011 @ 10:07 am | delete
Such scars are hard to treat but since it's so fresh there's a big chance it will improve automatically. I think the best thing you can do is massage it and hope it will smooth out. I do know of someone who used Cica Care silicone sheets and found out that they pulled up a part of his sunken scar. You can read more about it in a post I wrote about it. I put a link (atrophic scar treatment) to it just above this comment section because I can't add it here. Hope this helps.

    Hiho, its me again,

    Thanks for the last reply.

I still have a scar on my nose for almost 3 months. Now, I'm planning to go to south america to travel for 3 months, and I'm getting a little concerned regarding my scar. Will it be enough to use strong sunscreen and/or a baseball cap, or is there anything else I should be thinking about? I was planning on using sun factor 50 (not sure if you have the same measurements though). I'm also from Scandinavia so my skin is not used to the effects o strong sunrays.

    Thanks

Howdy Larry, I think applying a good sunscreen (and/or cap) will be sufficient. Maybe you will have to reapply during the day but don't we all. So I think you will be fine. Wish you a wonderful trip!

Hello, I had a sandfly bite just above my ankle about a year ago. the itch would come and go every now and then and unfortunately for me, I have a bad habit of scratching it until it became an open wound again. Most of the time I do it subconsciously while I'm asleep. Now the wound has become more red and larger than before, and pus would always ooze out. I'm starting to feel so worried about the scar although the damage has already been done. :(
  • Beas Dec 4, 2011 @ 4:34 pm | delete
Hi Genevieve, maybe you can bandage the wound at night so you can't scratch it. I think you might want to look into manuka honey based wound dressings. They can really speed the healing process and are very potent in fighting off infections. The sooner your wound heals the less risk on scarring. Wish you good luck!

Hello, I was bitten by the pet doc 2 weeks ago, and have a laceration scar coming down from the corner of my bottom lip. It's red and slightly raised, gets sore at times and it's presence is lowering my confidence/overall self esteem. Can you recommend any creams/ointments to minimize it and reduce the scaring? my doctor would not give me anything on prescription.

It was treated by glue as I didnt go to hospital straight after the incident. I wore butterfly stiches on it for a few days and the glue fell off after a week.

I've been moisturising it daily ever since....please help! :(

Hello Magnus, I recommend a silicone cream such as Kelo-cote or ScarAway serum. I think I would choose the first. (See the ad just above this comment section) Silicones are the only over the counter product for such scars that are proven effective. I have used them myself and they flattened, softened, and toned down the color of my red, raised scars.

Glycolic acid is a popular peeling product which may benefit you. Since your scar is not very deep and you already notice improvement I would probably stick with moisturizing and massaging for now. Vaseline will do the job as well according to at least one study. For more info on glycolic acid check out Amazon reviews and this (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11095203 )PubMed study. All the best.

In case you are interested, here's more on skin needling. Bottom line, self needling is not always recommended for scars but check out the comment, it's a detailed description of someone who uses derma needling for her atrophic facial scars.

I recall getting a burn on my arm when I was young. In time the scar disappeared. I can't see the mark any more. It is amazing the way our bodies can heal the way they do.

hi, i was recently burned by a hot fork, and it leaved a fork shaped indentation on my arm, when i woke up the next morning it had blistered quite badly and so i went to the doctors, who then put a patch containing silver in it, over the top of the wound and told me to leave it there for a week, when it was eventually taken off, there was no difference to the wound, the blisters had reduced but it had opened up into one big open wound. Went back yesterday and they put on a iodine paste covered by a dressing. Its really itchy and i desperately dont want a visible fork burn on my arm forever. Any recommendations? Like the silicone gel patches, where can i buy them? Thanks alot.
  • Beas Nov 30, 2011 @ 10:28 am | delete
Hi martha, I don't know exactly what type of silver dressing they used but in general opinions on silver wound dressings differ. See this lens of mine for more detailed info on silver in wound care.

    I would recommend to use
manuka honey wound dressings as long as the burn is still a wound. And silicone scar sheets for the scar. Best of luck.

Yes, silicone gel patches. Did you use them? They helped my chest scar get flat, softer, less red, and less itchy and painful.

Hi, i have a scar on my cheekbone from two stitches. i have it now 5 and a half months, but shortly after the accident happened i went on holidays and my docter, after i asked him about protecting it, said dont worry too much. when i came home it was a very dark brown in coluor, it has improved since but it is still quite brown in contrast to my natural skin colour. what can i do to help it get less dark as best i can? thank you..
  • Beas Nov 28, 2011 @ 1:14 pm | delete
Hi Kevin, the medical term for the darkening of your scar is hyperpigmentation. Immature scars are more susceptible to the UV radiation in sunshine which increases melanin and causes the dark color. There are some commonly used lightening agents that can fade the dark color. Some are preferred above others. This lens addresses which are best to use. Good luck.

I have a dime sized scar on my forehead. It is 4 months old, it is almost back to my skin color. I hear you talk about keeping it out of direct sunlight. Can I go out with a cap if it is not in direct sunlight. Or should i just be on the safeside and wear sunscreen or a bandana to cover it. I have been wear a bandana and have not even let indirect sun light hit it. what about driving inside of a car on a sunny day. Should I still cover my scar inside the car. or am I beeing too cautious. Thank you for your help. :)
  • Beas Nov 25, 2011 @ 3:06 pm | delete
I don't you are too cautious Scooter. Do you know that, for example, a white t-shirt only has a SPF of 7.. If your bandana is darker it offers some more protection but personally, I would use sunscreen to be safe. Especially since your scar is relatively fresh. Kind regards.

    Hi,
I had a tattoo surgically removed from my upper arm (after failed laser treatments). The tattoo was removed in two stages and after the second surgery my "scar" or incision was thinner than my hair line and looked amazing (about 3 inches long). Now, seven months later, the scar has become large (size of pencil in width) is red and really hard. It is not a keloid I don't think and my plastic surgeon says it will fade eventually. I know I need to be patient and that scars on the upper arm always stretch but what can I expect or do? I massage with vitamin E and use the silicone patches often....It seems that any other injury on my body has healed perfectly and I wonder if stitches would have been better (I only had internal stitches and then wound was closed with tape- this was done with top plastic surgeon).
  • Beas Nov 17, 2011 @ 2:59 am | delete
Hi Lauren, I would say, toss the vitamin E and use petroleum jelly or manuka honey cream instead. They both hydrate really well. Apart from that I think you are doing everything you can. Not sure about whether you would have been better off with normal stitches, especially since your scar was so thin in its early stage. Guess you have to be patient, in time your scar will, most likely, fade and become soft. Wishing you all the best.

Hello, About 2 months ago i had a little mole removed from my right cheek. It was an excision preformed by a plastic surgeon. I was given Dermatix and i applied it religiously twice a day. However, as of last week, It seems that my scar seems worse. Where as before it looked more like a red line, it now looks even more red and blotchier. I stopped with dermatix, and dont know what to put. I went back to polysporin for a few days, then to vitamin E till i read it doesnt work and now I am applying Aquaphor. Is there something else i should be doing to help reduce redness?

    Thank you
  • Beas Nov 11, 2011 @ 5:05 am | delete
I think it's good you stopped using polysporin (prolonged use of antibiotic ointments is not recommended) and vitamin E. I would continue to use petroleum jelly and maybe later try using the silicones again. It may be part of the healing process that your scar's appearance will worsen first before improving. Give it some time, it will most likely fade the coming months. Best of luck.

Hello. My son burnt his face on a marshmallow 2 months ago and as a results has hypertrophic scarring under his nose. We've been told by the doctor that the redness should improve over the next 4 months but that the healing process will take 2-3 years. Only then would they consider laser surgery if the scar is still very visible. I was just wondering whether we should wait that long or consider laser surgery sooner? Thanks
  • Beas Nov 10, 2011 @ 9:27 am | delete
Hi, personally I wouldn't consider laser surgery sooner (or any other invasive type of treatment). I would use a silicone gel to reduce the redness and elevation of the scar. It is very likely that the scar will fade the coming months.

Hi! Just to tag onto this question. My 2yr old son fell and as a result he had a deep laceration between his eyebrows above the bridge of his nose. He received 2 internal stitches and 5 external stitches. He would not wear a bandage or anything else ontop of the stitches to protect it from being so active...especially at night when sleeping. We "gooped" it with neosporin at bedtime to keep him from pulling at the stitches. The stitches have been out for one week and I'm not sure what to do now to reduce redness and scarring. It is still red, very hard where the stitches were, and you can see the stitch lines. He can't stand bandaids and will pull things off. What would you recommend we do to keep treating his scar to minimize scarring? Thank you so much in advance!

    ~worried mom
  • Beas Nov 30, 2011 @ 4:34 am | delete
Hello Bridgitte, I guess I would try and see if he will tolerate silicone gel. After it dries it forms a thin film. Silicones also reduce itch which may be another benefit in your son's case since he will be less inclined to pick at the wound/scar. If that doesn't work then I would regularly apply Vaseline or better, a manuka honey cream so that the tissue is at least moisturized well. Wish you all the best.

Hi Vixie, that sounds like a nasty cut. I think it would be best to ask your doctor but it seems to me that if it's that painful I would give it some rest for at least a day or so. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

    Hi ,
I had a tummy tuck done about six months ago and my scar is healing nicely but these past two weeks i have been having alot of itchy skin on and around my scar. I can't wear my pants or undies without feeling uncomfortable due to the itching. I am using bio-oil and vasoline to moisturize it and stopped using my scar gel about one month ago. I was using a silicone based scar gel 24/7 for a little over four months. Dr said I can stop but now this itching is driving me crazy. What can I do if anything to help control or stop the itch? Thank you for your help =)
  • Beas Nov 4, 2011 @ 5:01 am | delete
Hi there, what comes to mind is maybe switch to a pure silicone gel because the other ingredients may cause the itch. Or sheets but they must be breathable because otherwise they can also cause itch and skin maceration. Or you could use an anti-itch cream. I posted a link to my blog with more info on scar itch relief just above this comment. (we can't add links to our own sites anymore because of too much spam) Hope your itch will be gone soon. Good luck!

My daughter had a mole removed from her chest and has been using Cicacare since her stitches were removed. This week, almost 2 months after, I noticed that her scar turned from pink to red. It is not raised, just red. I took her to the doctor and he said he sees blood vessels but no signs of major complications. He told us to keep using the silicon sheet. Bottom line: her scar seems to be getting worse (very red), and I am concern and unsure if i should keep using the sheets. The doctor scheduled another appt in 2 weeks for some type of laser treatment. Would appreciate your advice. Thank you.
  • Beas Nov 3, 2011 @ 4:36 am | delete
Hi Laura, I don't want to contradict your doctor since I am no medical professional. But I can tell you that personally I would give it some more time. ( I had an appointment for steroid injections one but canceled and when looking back, no regrets here) Your daughter's scar is only two months old which is very young. It is still healing and generally, redness is a natural part of it. Many invasive treatments (such as some laser therapies) come with side effects. I would keep using the silicones (maybe stop for a few days to see how the scar reacts to that) and let the body do it's work. Almost all scars will fade in time. That's just my two cents. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi, I have had a scar under my eye on my left cheek after I had a skin abcess there last October (scar has been there since the wound fully healed end of october 2010) the scar varies in colour sometimes dark, and is always very red after washing etc and usually dry as well. Its abut as big as a 50p coin. I have tried several solutions such as Boots scar gel, kele-cote (just made the scar really dry!) and Bio Oil. none of which have made much difference. Any further ideas would be much appreciated since it looks like I have a constant bruise!
  • Beas Oct 27, 2011 @ 9:58 am | delete
Hi Jason, it's normal that it is still red. It's part of the healing process that may take a while. I'm a bit surprised about silicone gel making the scar dry because the method of action of silicones is hydration (which is commonly accepted). Moisturizing is recommended, so I would use Vaseline or manuka honey (cream). The latter seems to have very potent hydrating properties and is thought (by some experts) to maybe improve scars as well. Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Ovante Oct 19, 2011 @ 10:22 am | delete
i din't think vitamin E can do anything with scars, the author probably ment the vitamin C or ascorbic acid. When vitamin C is used in form of a cream it can reduce the post acne scar tissue and remove scars completely. You need to use the cream with vitamin C for a while but the scars can be removed with this method.
  • Beas Oct 19, 2011 @ 12:48 pm | delete
You are right Ovante, stable forms (this is essential since vitamin C is inherently unstable) of vitamin C show to benefit scar healing. It fades dark pigment in certain scars, decreases redness and inflammation, and is said to stabilize collagen formation in scar tissue. I doubt if scars can be removed completely though.

Hi, about two weeks ago I was working on a project with a hot glue gun while wearing shorts. The hot glue gun dripped onto my upper thigh, it was extremely painful. When I managed to get the hot glue off it stung for awhile and I dabbed it with water. It actually indented my skin. It didn't blister but scabbed. I applied moisturizer and neosporin to it on and off while keeping it covered. The skin has even out (there is no longer an indent) but it is bright pink with brownish skin around it (which im guessing is bruising which will fade). Will the red/pink ness go away or will this be permanent? I'm super self conscious about it because it's in my bikini line.
  • Beas Oct 20, 2011 @ 3:31 am | delete
Hi Paulina, I think you can assume the red/pink color will fade. It takes time, sometimes up to 2 years, but generally shorter. Just keep moisturizing and maybe massage the scar tissue. Best of luck.

I am a blacksmith and whilst working my tongs (very hot metal as was fire welding at time) flicked up and touched my face leaving two long burns from my chin across both lips and on the end of my nose. The end of my nose is red and my lips and skin on lip and chin have turned dark brown. (I am brown) The colours are becoming more prominent each day. I am moisturising with vaseline and cocoa butter. I desperately dont want to scar as this is very obvious in centre of my face.
  • Beas Oct 20, 2011 @ 3:29 am | delete
Hi Valerie, If you are prone to hypertrophic/ keloid scars you might want to use silicones in addition since they help prevent such scar tissue from forming. Apart from that I think you are doing fine by moisturizing with Vaseline. I understand the scars are new so they will fade naturally. It's common for them to turn darker first. Good luck!

    Hi,

About a week ago (to be completely honest) I got drunk and trip face down into a buddies carpet floor. This left carpet burn on the middle of my nose as well as the tip and a spot above my lip. The first couple days I cleaned it constantly for infection and have been moisturizing it constantly with triple antibiotic (contains white petroleum). No scab ever really formed since I was moisturizing it but now it just pink with even skin. My question is should I just keep applying triple antibiotic to keep moisturizing it to prevent a permanent scar? Is this the optimal method to insure I will regain even skin tone? Or should I use a different method to insure no scarring or skin tone differences occur. Thank you.
  • Beas Oct 7, 2011 @ 3:47 am | delete
Hi Jon, keeping wound moist and preventing scabs seems to be a good thing to do. However, many experts (such as a professor of dermatology at the Mayo Clinic) advise against structurally applying antibiotic ointments on wounds. He said: "These ointments may keep the wound moist but they can also lead to swelling and an allergic reaction called contact dermatitis." I think it's better to moisturize it with Vaseline. Also medical grade manuka honey wound dressings have proven to work wonders. Even those that didn't seem curable. This is no sales pitch but it really prevented a man from having his leg amputated. You can read a news article on the story here. Make sure to protect it against sunshine for it will worsen or delay healing. Good luck!

I appreciate the advice. This past friday I bought Vaseline (w/ cocoa butter) for the scarring and seemed to worked great the first two days. Now however I feel like my nose is starting to turn red again like its a rash. I just stopped using it since I believe that could be the cause. Any input or ideas?
  • Beas Oct 11, 2011 @ 8:43 am | delete
The first wound healing phase is called the inflammatory phase. It takes about 3 months and during this period vascularity is increased. It is normal for the wound or scar to be red and it will take time for it to tone down. If it looks like a rash it may be wise to stop using it for a while. You might benefit from using a silicone gel.

Hello, I found your article interesting. I have a 2 inch scar. Funny thing is that right after the surgery (that was done by a a great doc) the scar looked great, almost invisible, not red. The scar was fine till I started using the silicon patches (cica-care to be specific) I had the patch on for many 12 hour/day or more for many 3/4 days till I realized that the scar looked worse at that point. This is already a month+ after surgery I am talking about, the scar was already completely healed.
My question is, is it possible that a scar that looked great a week after surgery started looking worse a month later? Now it looks red, it's not raised but it looks like a fish bone (I see a white line + the small horizontal lines of the stitches that used to be there). I have been putting some vitamin E oil and to be honest I was surprised to read that it is not recommended and it could cause irritation, this is the first time I read such a thing. Also, if vitamin E can cause irritation I think that Vaseline can be even worse? I also bought a fresh aloe vera leaf and I have been putting the fresh, cool gel on the skin overnight, unfortunately it hasn't really helped.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
  • Beas Oct 7, 2011 @ 3:31 am | delete
Hi Mika, I can only tell you what I know about scars but if you're really worried, to be sure, I would advice you to consult your doctor. Some scars initially get more severe before they improve. (This is the case with tummy tuck scars) and redness is part of the healing process. I think it's not something to worry about too much since the scar is so fresh. It will take months for it to calm and mature. In one study it was shown that Vaseline did improve scars where vitamin E did not. Probably due to Vaseline's moisturizing properties. I don't know about Aloe Vera. In case I would have another prominent scar I would personally use manuka honey (or Medihoney cream or sheets) on it. There's no evidence it works but it may, according to some experts and dermatologists. I think your scar will turn out fine in time. You could also massage it gently to improve its appearance.

    Hello there,

I have a 1-1,5 cm scar formed like a C right on my nose which I got through an injury. It has now been 4 weeks since I removed the stitches and the scar has turned red and I believe gotten a little broader, although not raised. Ever since I removed the stitches I've kept it covered with surgical tape as the nurse recommended. I was told to keep it covered until it was fully healed as she didnt think it'd become a scar... but I have come to the realization that there infact will be, otherwise it should have healed until now.

So my question for you is, should I still keep it covered with surgical tape? In my job I work in many not-so-clean environments (factories). I'm very pretentious about it since I'm not very fond of the idea of having a scar right in the centre of my face, but I guess it's something I'll have to live with. As I've understood it will probably fade after some time atleast.
  • Beas Oct 4, 2011 @ 4:47 am | delete
Hi Larry, if I understand correctly the wound hasn't healed yet? In that case I would stop using the tape and start using Medihoney patches or cream. They have helped heal wounds that seemed incurable. The link is to my page on wound healing, more info on these patches there too. I think they can be particularly useful considering your job because they have potent antibacterial and healing properties while fully natural. (there's a myriad of clinical evidence they work). But I have to remark I am just a consumer, no medical expert so for wounds that won't heal it's recommended to consult a medical professional. You can ask him or her about Medihoney. Once healed I would use silicones because I know from experience they work. Good luck!

hey, I had a tumor removed from my spinal cord about a month and a half ago. I am 24 years old still young but now I have a big (16") pink scar from my hair line down the back of my neck. it's still very pink like it was a month ago when the staples were removed and my doctor just recently gave me fucidin cream to apply to it twice daily. he also told me to keep it out of the sun. what do u no about this creme and do u think it will help the pinkness go away close to my skin color? I hope eventually even after 8 month the scar isn't that visible! :( it's pretty nasty.

Long story short, I was throwing up and lost circulation to my head; as a result, I passed out and landed on cement face first. I had about 5 different abrasions on the left side of my face, all about 1-2 inches in diameter, some lighty skinned and others about a centimeter deep.

It's been about 2 months and all scars are healed besides one closer to my chin (deepest abrasion) which is still red, and another closer to my eye, which is a little darker and skin toned (i was in the sun :(, bad call). I took good care of my face, rinsed out with Cetaphil and applied Bag Balm (i know, i got a lot of jokes from it), but within a month, most scars were in the light pink stage to almost completely healed.

Back to my problem scar - It is currently in the reddish stage and looks more like a blood clot than a raised hypertrophic scar. However, the healing has not progressed over the last month. Like an idiot, i went to Hot Yoga once, and since then, my scar became as red as ever - maybe because of the salt?

What would you recommend that I do with this scar? It isn't hypertrophic - do you think it will heal? How long? Would silicone sheets work for this also?
  • Beas Sep 20, 2011 @ 4:38 am | delete
Hi Jake, it's hard to say what you should do. You could try silicones but whether they will will work remains to be seen. They are designed to mimic the natural barrier function of the skin so they may. How long it takes for a scar to mature really depends on so many factors even medical experts can't say for sure. I do think it will heal eventually. Hope this helps a bit, good luck!

  • Beas Aug 20, 2011 @ 3:38 am | delete
Yes I would strongly recommend to use silicone sheets on your daughter's scar. There is no clinical evidence onion-extract based creams (such as Mederma) work. For silicones there is. They are proven to reduce redness as well as smoothen out and flatten scars. (and lessen itch and pain) Silicones also reduce the risk on keloid scar development. If sheets (or patches or strips as they are called) are inconvenient I would opt for a silicone gel. I hope your daughter's scar will heal nicely.

Hi about two months ago I had a nervous breakdown and burned a cigarette on my forhead in the mental hospital. It scabbed instantly and fell off about a week or two after. Ever since then it has been red. I have been putting vaseline and mederma on it for the past week and I have not seen much change. I will be seeing a dermatologist this week and also plan on using silicone sheets. my question is...will it dissappear completely and how long will it take? is it a 3rd degree burn and what else can i use to treat it. Thanks!
  • Beas Aug 15, 2011 @ 7:21 am | delete
It will most likely not disappear completely as most scars will not. It may take up to almost 2 years for a scar to mature. You could also gently massage it, keep it warm, hydrated, and possibly by stimulating blood flow (e.g. by exercising). Not all of these techniques are proven effective but there are indications they might work. Topical use of stable vitamin C is thought to help as well. And not, or less smoking will help definitely.

I got a mole removed on my upper arm about 3 months ago, and there is a red, raised scar that I have been treating with Maderma for about 6 weeks and I haven't noticed any change. I am now thinking that I will try the silicone patches. My deramtaologist said she doesn't want to remove anymore moles (costmetic removal) if it is going to leave a permanent scar worse than the mole itself and I agree. But if they will eventually heal I would like to get them removed because of course a mole is never going to heal wheras the scar might. Do you think that eventually the skin will look more normal? If I can get a start on the surgery and healing now instead of waiting 18 months to begin I would prefer it. And do you have any experience with scars let after mole removal surgery?

Yes your scar will tone down and look more normal. Your scar is still relatively young. For most scars it takes up to a year or more to mature and become less prominent so it will most likely fade in time. Silicone sheets can help speed the process as well as prevent problematic scars from developing. They are in fact the only proven effective remedy, contrary to Mederma. I have no personal experience with mole removal scars but I have with other types of surgical scars as well as scars from cuts and stab wounds. Good luck with it!

I am 8 weeks post breast surgery. I tend to develop raised scars. I noticed yesterday a wide redness at the beginning of the incision site. Will silicone patches help? Am I past the time of it becoming raised? Is there anything else i can do?
  • Beas Jun 30, 2011 @ 1:23 am | delete
Silicone patches are most likely your best option. Other things you can do are; gently massaging the tissue (but only if it doesn't get much redder during and shortly after), mildly exercising in order to stimulate blood flow but no vigorous activities because the scar may then overstretch. Keeping the scar warm and hydrated by drinking enough fluids, cut back on alcohol and don't smoke. Here's more info on my experiences with silicone scar treatment, the best scar removal products, and breast reduction scars. Good luck cc.

I find that Bio-Oil keeps delicate scar tissue supple. I understand that some people with eczema use it too.

I hear that a lot. Thanks for sharing.

My name is pov. I want to take the scar on my hand, so where should I go? and it can be good like the nomal skin or not? How can I do for it?
  • Beas Feb 1, 2011 @ 2:20 am | delete
Hi Pov, it depends on how your scar looks. If it's red, raised, itchy, or lumpy you are best off with silicone gel (sheets). These are also the recommended over-the-counter treatment for burn scars. To be sure I would recommend for you to consult your doctor or a dermatologist.

What about older scars? My son was in a motocycle accident 1 1/2 years ago that badly scraped his elbow. The scar tissue is still red and raised. He doesn't care about it. But it got me to thinking about a couple of years earlier when he had minor surgery to remove a benign lump from his other arm. The scar from that surgery also stayed red. I'm concluding that, unlike my other children, his skin responds differently to wounds. Is it too late to treat these? Otherwise, I'm hoping this information will prove very effective if in the future he experiences more wounds like these.
  • Beas Nov 30, 2010 @ 3:32 am | delete
I have no personal experience with treating older scars but both studies as well as manufacturers state that silicone patches improve older scars as well. The only restriction seems to be that it takes longer and the results may be less prominent. I am convinced that the use of silicone patches (or gel ointment) will reduce the redness and elevation in most older scars. So I certainly don't think it's too late to treat his scars. Hope this is of some help to you.

Yes I think vitamin E helps with scarring a lot.
  • Beas Nov 2, 2010 @ 12:14 pm | delete
Some people swear by using vitamin E based creams, or ointments. There is however, no scientific evidence for it's efficacy. The use of pure vitamin E, e.g. by breaking capsules and applying the oil, is disencouraged by many dermatologists because it doesn't work and may worsen scar appearance.

I scraped my nose the other day and it's in the shape of a triangle. It happen on Thursday night but it had scabed over but I was washing my face and it came of I have had three scars 1 I got when I was five that was indentented it went one on my leg and one on my arm. I'm realy worrided about this because it near my nostrils and indented what could help it heal quicker I don't mind about cost I just need to get rid of it badley
  • Beas Jul 19, 2010 @ 5:07 am | delete
First of all it's best to avoid scabbing by keeping a wound moist and clean but this is, of course, of no use to you now. For now, I would make sure to keep it hydrated by either using Vaseline or manuka honey or a manuka honey cream because of its excellent moisturizing properties. Also keep the wound/ scar out of the sun and/or protect it by using a sunscreen of at least SPF 15. Here's some more info on wound healing Hope it will heal nicely.

hi, my son recently suffered a nasty cut on his cheek, small but deep, he's just turned 3 (and I feel terrible about it! sick in fact, but I guess that's part of parenting)...

I'm not expecting it to completely vanish, but want to know I've done all I can to reduce it as much as possible for him... on treating scars I keep reading all sorts of conflicting advice, but this is probably the best page I've seen yet! so hope you don't mind a few questions from a worried Dad... (don't worry not expecting a full consultation lol - just any info at all, no matter how small)

the cut is on the front of his cheek, it makes a small line across his cheek when he smiles, maybe because the cut went through fat/muscle?.. do you think this will get better/heal more internally over the years?
also it's an indented scar, does this effect the way it heals as opposed to a raised scar?
its still quite red, I've read about lemon juice reducing redness? do you know f this works?
sorry one more question, do silicone patches work on indented scars?
    many thanks!

Hi mrdad, I can imagine your concerns. I can only tell you what I know from my experience and what I have learned the past years. I also had a scar on my cheek (between my cheek and jawbone) and it is as good as invisible now. This is my only scar which faded away almost completely.

Since you describe the scar as still red there might be inflammation (swelling around the cut) which can also cause the scar to appear indented temporarily? I had another scar next to the corner of my mouth. This scar was a bit depressed at first probably because of the type of skin and tissue there. It turned out flat later.

As far as I know there is no research showing lemon juice improves scars.

To be honest, I don't know if silicone gel works on indented scars. I think would not use them. I would use a simple moisturizing cream (or medical grade manuka honey) because of its hydrating properties, and apply it a few times a day. This because many studies have shown hydration of scar tissue to be beneficial for the healing process.

Many scars improve over time, from what you are telling me I get the impression the scar is still really fresh so a lot of improvement can still be made. Thanks for the compliments on this page and the best of luck with your son's scar!

    Hi Beas,
thank you so much for the info, kind words and reassurance!
Seems these thing are often far more traumatic for the parent than the child haha, I hope other parents in similar situations come across this page. We'll keep up the hydration, and I've also read that protecting scars from intense sunlight is important to reduce/prevent discoloration.
    thanks again Beas!

    Hi,
I just want to let you know I feel your pain. My 6 year old about a year ago was running to answer the door (babysitter was knocking) tripped and gashed his cheek bone on coffee table. He had to get 3 stitches. It has gotten alot better but, still indeed noticable. It's small like your son's , but it's really deep. When he smiles it looks like a indent. I have been using scarguard which seems to be the best out of all the medicines I have tried. I also always put sunscreen on it. I've have been trying to do alot of research as well to see what will help. I really feel for you. I pray your son's scar heals. I actually found someone who feels my pain. I still feel sick about it. Good luck!!!!

    Hi,
thanks for your kind words and sorry to hear about your son's cheek, yes I still get that sickening feeling too now and then (so I'm not the only one I thought I was going crazy haha)... and yes the same here the indent when he smiles etc, breaks my heart. Kids all get scars of course but it's a shame when on the front of their faces, and as parents we always blame ourselves.
I keep telling myself it'll become less and less noticeable as the tissue changes and regenerates, and of course it could have been a lot worse.
I was quite surprised just how little information I found about treating child injury scars, would love to hear more about your experience using scarguard and if it's made any noticeable difference? Also have you tried the silicon sheets?

I didn't know that Vitamine E can cause allergic reactions. Thanks for your great lens. Good luck.
