How to register for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

Ranked #27,647 in Business & Work, #412,987 overall | Donates to Save the Children

If your business is an intensive user of electricity, you must register or you could receive a £500 penalty!

If you run a business in the UK, you may need to register for the government's mandatory carbon emissions trading scheme. It affects all businesses with at least one half-hourly meter, and you must register by September 30th 2010.

The scheme is designed to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by providing incentives to the largest users of business electricity - those using over 6,000 MWh (Megawatt hours) - equal to an annual spend of around £500,000 on electricity.

Most businesses only need to disclose information on their energy usage, but it is essential that you register to prove your business does not pass the 6,000 MWh threshold.

Only businesses with a half-hourly meter need to register

Check your bills or find out your MPAN from your supplier

Example MPAN showing half-hourly profile '00'

All UK electricity supplies have a unique 21 digit identification code known as the Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN), which allows the supply to be identified and therefore transferred from one supplier to another.

This is commonly known as the Supply Number, and most start with 01 to 08, depending on the type and size of the supply. Half-hourly electricity meters however, always start with '00', so check your bills or contact your Distribution Network Operator if you aren't sure if you have a half-hourly electricity meter or not.

If you do have a half-hourly electricity meter

If you do have a meter that starts with '00', you need to act now

Once you have confirmed that you have a half-hourly supply since 2008, you know that you need to take action.

It is most likely that your business uses under 6,000MWh (1 MWh is 1,000 kWh), in which case you must register for the disclosure of information.

If your business used over 6,000MWh in 2008 then you must become a full participant in the scheme, which requires you to purchase CO2 allowances to cover the carbon dioxide your energy emits. In the introductory phase of the scheme, this will be sold as £12 per tonne of CO2, and your business will have to pay further costs or receive refunds based on your energy efficiency performance throughout the year.

There are an estimated 5,000 organisations that must become full participants in the scheme, and they will be compiled in a league table based on the changes they make - so if you are a full participant you are in competition with the rest of the country to become as efficient as possible, and receive financial incentives based on that performance.
