A large number of procedures are available for the removal of tattoos. Not all of them are however effective and some are not very safe. Here I'll discuss the better known ones. The most popular method for the removal of tattoos today is by laser. Removal by laser is considered to be safe and by far the most effective way to get rid of unwanted tattoos. Treatment facilities are available country wide and thus very accessible. The laser light breaks down the tattoo pigment and the body's own scavenger cells remove the remnants. Modern lasers commonly in use are Q-switched Nd:Yag, Q-switched Alexandrite and the Q-switched Ruby.
Another method is by excision, difficult word meaning the doctor will cut your tattoo out. Your tattoo is definitely removed permanently. This method is obviously used for small tattoos.
You can opt for a procedure called dermabrasion. The tattoo is removed by "sanding" the skin with an abrasive tool. You can attempt to do this at home using salt, water and gauze wrapped over a small block of wood. This traditional home tattoo removal method is called salabrasion.
Infra red light has being used to remove tattoos but generally left a lot of scarring and thus is not popular anymore.
A number of creams or lotions are available today that claim to fade the tattoo away. Two of the more popular ones are Tat B Goneand Wrecking Balm. These are great as you can apply the process yourself and in the privacy of your own home. Varying degrees of success has been reported and depends on the age, size and depth of your tattoo.
