Repair the registry on your computer | Part 1

Backing up the registry and why you should do it.

Before attempting to repair the registry on your computer you should make a back up just incase things go wrong. It's really simple to do this and only takes a couple of minutes.

1. Click 'Start' then click on 'Run'.

2. Type "regedit" in the open dialog box without the quotes (" ") then click 'OK'.

3. From within the registry editor highlight the root subkey which is usually 'My Computer', then click 'File' then 'Export'.

4.From the Export dialog box, choose the location where you would like to save the backup of your registry and enter this in the 'Save in' box. In the file name box enter a name for the backup of your registry file (e.g. regbackup) and then click 'Save'.

The exported backup of the registry file is usually around 100MB in size and is small enough to fit on removable media such as CD's, DVD's etc.

Restoring the registry from the backup is simple just double click on the file and click 'yes' to add the file to the registry.

System Restore

If you're using Windows XP or later you can backup the registry on your computer using system restore just follow the steps below.

1. Goto 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Accessories' > 'System Tools' then 'System Restore'.

2. Select 'Create a restore point' then click 'Next'.

3. Type in a description for your restore point and click on 'create'.

This will backup your registry and restoring it is easy. To do that, from the System Restore menu, click on 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' then click on 'next'. Select the restore point you wish to restore to and click on 'next' and then 'next' again.
