Cat Litter Tray Issues

One of the first steps to try out is, keeping the litter tray as clean as possible. In the past I have come across this scenario, and many cat owners forget the basics. Cats are notoriously clean animals, and they can change almost overnight. If their cat litter tray is empty, fresh and clean it is more inviting.

You may also find that your cat, will decide that it does not want to do a pee in the same box that it poop's in. This is very common and easily solved by simply adding another cat tray into their lives. You can keep it in the same room, or try it in another room nearby, its just a matter of testing it out.

If you have tried these methods with no luck, then maybe your cat is trying to tell you something else.

Location, Location, Location

When It Comes Down To Peeing

The location of the litter tray is important. Do not place it anywhere near your cats food, it would be like you eating your dinner in the bathroom, not good for you and also not for your cat.

Try and place the litter box, in a quiet location away from noise and traffic in your household. The more quiet and private the area is, the better. Remember, your cat cannot close the door and have some privacy in the bathroom, so try and make it as private as possible.

Oh, and try not to take pictures of your cat whilst they are having some private time.....

Health Issues

Now I don't want to try and alarm you, but health issues are something to look out for. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's) are common, and you may have experience with them already, if not here is what to look out for.

I have been faced with this situation, and it was quickly solved by a course of antibiotics. There are a couple of tell tale signs to look out for, one of the main being urine problems, or lack of it should I say. My cat started peeing just outside his litter box, but only in small amounts. It turned out he had a UTI, and was associating the pain he felt with the litter box, so he avoided going inside to pee.

If you think this is happening, also check your litter box for small clumps of urine in the litter, as opposed to larger clumps that your cat will usually do.

Isolate Your Cat.

This might sound like a last resort, but for some it has to be done.

The only way for some cats is to isolate them to a room, that only has food, water and litter box. I know some may not like or disagree with this, but in my opinion if it stops your cat inappropriate urination, then for some its a great way to solve a situation that may cause even bigger problems than ruined carpets.

Cat urine can be dangerous to adults and children. The ammonia which is present in cat urine can pose a health risk if breathed in under certain conditions. Don't let it come to this.
