Top 6 Training Tips!

How to run a 5k in 6 tips!

  • 1Start off slow and build up The worst thing you can do when you start training to run a 5k is to push yourself too hard in the first few days. Take it easy, go for a few training runs and make sure you get home out of breath, but don't push too hard and don't injure yourself!
  • 2Bring a friend! Running is always more fun with friends, bring a buddy along to help pass the time, help commit to running every few days (harder to pull out if someone is counting on you...) and get both of yourselves healthier while having fun!
  • 3Hydrate! You probably know that you should drink 8 glasses (8oz) of water a day (that's about 2 liters for you metrics), but do you really do it? Try to drink 2 glasses after coming home from a run, and try to hydrate throughout the day. Keep a bottle by your desk in the office so you can sip at it throughout!
  • 4Track your progress Keep track of how your training is progressing- you can do this through RunKeeper, through the Garmin Forerunner) (shown below and here) or just through a simple pencil and paper. Look to tracking each day you run, how much distance and what your time was. If you've got the Garmin, you can also track heart rate, elevation, speed throughout and so on, which is even better!
  • 5You always have time I'm not saying that you have to train every day (in fact you should be looking at every 2 days), but never use not having enough time as an excuse. A change, run, shower and change can take as little as 20 or 30 mins. Can you really not spare 30 mins in the 1440 minutes every day??
  • 6Go faster If you haven't got time to go for a long run, go for a shorter one, but push a bit harder and go a bit quicker! This will do wonders for your cardio, and will allow you to squeeze running in, even if you've got a packed schedule! And of course, you'll get a better time when you run a 5k for real!

For your ears! Sennheiser Sports Headphones

Sennheiser PMX 680 Sports Earbud Headphones

Amazon Price: $39.99 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

Music is a great way to keep your mind occupied and to keep you running for longer. If you're like me, I often get bored running before I get tired. The Sennheiser PMX 680 is fantastic in that they will stay in your ear so you're not constantly adjusting and fiddling with them and you can get on with running!

So your phone is safe! iPhone Tuneband

Tuneband for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, Grantwood Technology's Armband, Silicone Skin, and Front and Back Screen Protector, Black

Amazon Price: $29.99 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

Great for use with the above- before I used the Garmin, I used to use this with the "Runkeeper" app, as a cheap way to track my speed, distance and routes. This band is strong, stays snug on your arm and means your valuable phone isn't bobbing around in your pocket ready to fall out!

The Best 5k Training Programs

There a LOT of training programs out there for those of you who want them. A personal favorite of mine is this: 5k run from the smarties at the Mayo Clinic. 7 weeks to take you from couch to running a 5k. Oh and of course, if you're happy with your 5k pace, you can always try to run a 10k or a marathon!

Alternatives are this from the folks over at about.com as well as a more detailed program on Active

Race day!

OK, so today it's race day. You're ready to run 5k- what should you do? First things first, make sure you eat breakfast (or lunch... depending on when your race is), but try to make sure you don't eat too much within a 2 hour window of your race- just a banana and some liquids will do there. Second, you want to make sure you're sufficiently hydrated- don't want to be out there already feeling parched!

At the race Start off slow... and I mean slower than most of the rest. A big rookie mistake is to follow the experts and the naive into the distance for the first 1km and use up all your energy so you're limping home for the rest. Don't fall into this trap! Let them pass you and smile knowing that you'll be overtaking some of them later as you managed your energy well :). Finally, keep an eye out for the km markers... and when you're 500m away, give it your all!

After the race Hydrate first! But take it easy for the first 10 mins otherwise your stomach will probably have something to say about it. Eat a snack if you're feeling hungry and don't forget to stretch yourself out to help ensure you're not too stiff the next day!

From the experts!

Brilliant info. I love body weight training and have never been a good runner, unless I do interval training but long distance has not been my thing, this is great stuff and I will take it on board. PS LOVED the headphones and have just bought a pair of great orange and red Asics! With thanks and appreciation. Cathi x
